Lesson Title: Anatomy Challenge Class KS2 Topic Salmon Anatomy Time Allocation 40 mins Learning Intentions Identify and label the different parts of the salmon. Success Criteria Pupils should use their knowledge to correctly match and/or spell the correct anatomy part to the correct position. Key Vocabulary pectoral, pelvic, anul, dorsal, adipose & caudla (tail fin) Introduction Pupils will be asked to draw upon their own knowledge of what the term ‘anatomy’ is and to list several parts of their own anatomy. Pupils will then talk about the main parts of a fish’s anatomy. (Pairs/Groups) Introduce PowerPoint- ‘Salmon Anatomy’. Resources PowerPoint- ‘Salmon Anatomy’ Differentiated worksheets PowerPoint- ‘Anatomy Quiz’ Development (Activity) Using their knowledge from the PowerPoint the pupils will be asked to complete a labelling exercise. Here they will be given a diagram of a salmon (worksheet 1)** to complete. Key Questions Why are the fins important to the salmon? What is their purpose? What do the scales help prevent? How do fish breathe underwater? Plenary Ask pupils in pairs to talk for 1 minute about 3 different things/terms/vocabulary they learned about today. Use PowerPoint- ‘Anatomy Quiz’ to test and reaffirm the pupils’ knowledge of this new topic area. Differentiation Worksheet 1 includes a word bank of vocabulary. Worksheet 2 has blank spaces only. Extension Pupils may enhance their learning within this area y using the internet and search engines or suggested websites, available on the Teacher Notes, to research the inner anatomy of the salmon.
