IV. LEARNING MATERIAL
Concept Map:
Ecosystem
1. The Energy Flow in an EcosystemIf you observe the ecosystem being discussed before, you will then understand how the
relationship among organisms. Food is necessary for every organism including producers,
consumers, or even decomposers. How do they interact ?
Do you remember the process of photosynthesis? Plants trap the energy of sunlight and
use it to do chemical reaction. It changes water and CO2 into starch and oxygen. Starch is food
(chemical energy) stored by plants. When animals eat the plants, the energy is transferred to

animals. This transfer of energy from one organism to another is called energy flow. The flow of
energy can be shown by food chain and food web.
Food Chains
The plants energy is transferred to animals when grasshopperss, as consumers, eat rice. Then,
they are eaten by frogs. So, the energy is transferred from one animal to another gradually. The
energy is also transferred when decomposers decompose dead organisms. The process of eating
and being eaten is called a food chain. A food chain is an example of how food energy is
transferred from one organism to another in an ecosystem.
Shows components of a simple food chain. Plants produce food for themselves. They
store the food in their roots, stalks, and leaves. Animals eat plants and then they are eaten by
other animals. This is how the solar energy is spread all over the ecosystem.
Food Webs
In an ecosystem, the organism may get food from more
than one kinds of organism. An eagle may eat a lizard, a
small bird, or a rabbit. A small bird eats a carterpillar, a
snail, or fruit. Those make up many interconnected food
chains.A network of interconnected food chains is called
of a food web.
Energy piramyd
Each activity requires energy. From which living things get energy? Energy source for
organisms is chemical energy contained in food. Living beings are not capable of creating

energy, but rather just move and use to move. Energy transfer takes place from the sun to green
plants through photosynthesis. Here, light energy is converted into chemical energy. When green
plants eaten by herbivores, chemical energy stored in plants moved into the body
herbivores and some energy is lost in the form of heat. Similarly, when carnivores eat herbivores.
Therefore, the flow of energy in the reduced amount of the food chain. Movement of energy in
ecosystems is only one path, a flow of energy.
Tropical and level of the Food Pyramid
In the food chain we have seen that the trophic level consists of producers, consumers
levels I, II consumer level, and so on. Producers who are autotrophs always occupy the major
tropic levels, herbivores occupy the second trophic level, carnivores occupy the third trophic
level, and so on. Any transfer of energy from one trophic level to the next trophic level will be
the release of some form of thermal energy so that the amount of energy in the food chain to
higher trophic levels, the numbers are fewer and fewer. Pyramid is formed ecology / food
pyramid.
