• 1 - It is important to remember that the U.S decided to help the Allies against Germany in Europe BEFORE fighting the battle in the Pacific.

• 2 - America agreed to open another front against Germany in Europe. This forced Germany to fight a war on 2 Fronts

• 3 - D-Day (June 6, 1944): Also called Operation Overlord, the US landed troops in Normandy. Opening this western front began the drive to Germany that would ultimately destroy the Nazi Regime

What is different between these two maps? What could explain that difference?

What are the main ways that D-day imprinted this man’s memories?

The End of World War II in Europe is Coming

• As Allies began to see more and more victories in Europe against Germany, the writing became clear that the end of World War II in Europe was almost over.

• 4 - The Battle of Berlin - The last great battle in Europe during World War IIas the Soviets accepted the unconditional surrender of Germany

• 5 - Before the battle ended though, Adolf Hitler committed suicide.

• 6 - World War II in Europe was over, but as we know, it was still raging in the Pacific and didn’t truly end until we bombed Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

How did WW2 technology change war as we know it?

How World War II Was Fought

• 7 - World War II was fought very differently than previous wars. Most nations relied on new technologies that had come about in the last couple of decades to make war considerably more brutal and efficient.

• Planes were faster and more maneuverable.

• Aircraft carriers could now transport planes across the ocean and be a mobile base to launch attacks from

• Tanks were faster and tougher

• 8 - Radar was developed by the British which allowed them to know when the Germans were coming so they could launch a counter-attack.

What are the differences you see between the planes here? Why did these differences come about? How would this change the landscape of war?

What trends, themes, or patterns do you notice? Did what was going on in the Pacific have anything to do with what was going on in Europe?

War. War changes. The Fallout series likes to claim that war never changes. But the reality is that it

does.
