Laugh, Play ‘n’ Create: Week 3

Building a DIY Kite Task: follow the instructions below to create and test your own kite!

Materials

A full sheet of newspaper or a garbage bag Two wooden dowels or thin sticks (one should be shorter than the other) Scissors String Masking tape or packing tape Ribbon

Instructions 1. Using the sticks, the string and the tape, build your frame.

2. Cross the smaller stick over the longer stick in the shape of a lower-case T. The horizontal stick will

be about one-third of the way down.

3. Tie the sticks together with some string and then wrap tape over the string for extra strength.

4. Use the string to create an outline of the kite around the frame. Glue or tape the string to the bottom

of the frame and then wrap the string around the stick a few times.

5. Use the string to create a tight line to the end of the next stick.

6. Repeat the process until the shape is entirely outlined and you are back to the beginning.

7. Cut the string off, tie a knot and tape securely

8. Place a large sheet of newspaper or the plastic on the floor or table to make the sail.

9. Place the frame on top of it and cut about 3cms outside the frame to make it the same shape.

10. Start on one side and fold the excess paper/plastic over the string of the frame.

Page 3: LESSON PLAN AND RESOURCES€¦ · vertical stick. Repeat the process with the horizontal stick. 15. Use tape or glue to make sure these knots don’t slide around on the stick 16

11. Using tape, secure the folded edge to the sail. Cover the entire length with tape to prevent the wind

getting between the layers.

12. Repeat until all the edges are secure to the sail.

13. Cut two pieces of string that are the length of each stick, plus an extra 10-12cms.

14. Tie one end of the string tightly to the top of the vertical stick and the other end to the bottom of the

vertical stick. Repeat the process with the horizontal stick.

15. Use tape or glue to make sure these knots don’t slide around on the stick

16. Where these two strings intersect, tie a long length of string you’ll use to fly your kite. You can create

your own spool by wrapping the length of string around a toilet paper or paper towel roll.

17. Use string and ribbon, or other decorations, to make a tail. Attach it to the bottom of the kite.

Enjoy flying your kite.

Challenge your family members to make one and see whose kite flies the best!

Send your teacher a picture or video of your kite.
