Description of the class: 25 students (boys and girls)
Title of the lesson :Order and Chaos( W. Golding- Lord of the Flies)Type of the lesson: combined
Aim of lesson: At the end of the class the students will be able to:
Objectives:
O1: give examples of things they would do on a remote island;
O2: read the summary in the book correctly in order to answer the
questions;O3: use the new words connected to order and chaos in sentences
of their own;
O4: skim and scan the excerpts from the book in order to decide
which of them can be associated with the idea of reason and
which with chaos;
Skills : reading, speaking and writing.
Methods : conversation, explanation, observation, analyses
and exercise.
Teaching aids : blackboard, notebook, textbook, drawings
Time .: 50 minutes

Stages and techniques
1. Warm-up(1-3 min.)
a) Informal conversation
Teacher tries to create a pleasant and comfortable atmosphere by means of
routine conversation:
T: Hello children! How are you today?
T: Who is on duty today?
T: Who is absent?
b) Checking homework( 4-5 min.)
T: What was your homework for today?
S: We had ex. III 1. on page 29 .
T: I ask students to read the exercise.
2. Presentation( 38 min.)a) Lead in ( 6-7 min.)
T: Have you ever been on an island?
S: No, we havent.T: Do you wish to go on an island for some weeks in order to relax and have
fun?
T: Have you ever read a book dealing with people on an island? How is it
called?
T: Have you ever seen a film related with this idea?
S: Give answers.
T: Work in groups of four. Suppose you and your friend were on a desert
island. Agree upon and list a few things you would have to do there.
S: Give examples.
T: So, What did we speak about up to now?
S: we spoke about island and things to do there.
T: today we will discuss some fragments from a novel written by Wiliam
Golding. This author who lived between 1911-1993 was an English novelist.
Our fragments from today are from a novel of his called Lord of the Flies
in which all the events take place on a remote island. Some of his important

works are: Lord of the Flies, The Inheritors, Pincher martin, The Free Fall,
The Double Tongue a.s.o.
T: Ill write the title on the blackboard and some facts about the author.
b) Reading activity ( 7-8 min.)
T: Before we read the summary of the novel, decide together with your
partner what kind of book it might be. You may choose from: detective
story, science fiction, thriller, horror, romance, serious novel, travel book.
S: Give their predictions.
T: I ask two students to read the summary aloud.
T: I check the general understanding of the novel by asking the following
questions:
1. Why did The English schoolboys are cast away on that island?( as a
result of an unexplained wartime accident)
2. Who are the two leaders?( Jack and Ralph)
3. Who is in charge with the children basic needs? ( Ralph)4. Which is Ralphs role? ( to maintain order)
5. What object symbolizes order? ( a conch shell)
6. How did Jack rule? ( by fear)
7. Are the boys rescued in the end? ( Yes, they are rescued by a British
ship.)
c) Writing activity( vocabulary)( 8-10 min.)
T: Ill show them a drawing with the new words from the vocabulary and Ill
ask them to build sentences with the new words:
Conch: the large twisted shell of a tropical sea animal that look like a snail;
Littleuns:little ones;
Awesome: extremely impressive, serious or difficult so that you feel great
respect, worry or fear;
To appal: to make someone feel very shocked and upset
Snarling: a low angry sound;
Tide: the regular rising and falling of the level of the sea;
Heave: to throw something with a lot of effort;
Poke about: to look for something, especially by moving a lot of things
around;
Bay: a part of the sea that is partly enclosed by a curve in the land;To bounce: the action of moving up and down on a surface;
To squat: to sit with your knees bent under you.
S: Go to the blackboard and write sentences with the new words.

d) Reading activity( 9-10 min.)
S: students read the paragraph from A to J in groups of four and then write
ex. II 1. in their notebooks deciding in which of these fragments are the
following:
1. That only some of the boys should make all the decisions.
2. How the children work together.
3. The conch is no longer considered useful.
4. The boys nationality.
5. The most important element for their salvation.
6. The rules for organizing life on the island as stated by Ralph.
7. How Jack gets rid of his shame and self consciousness.
8. Henrys illusion of mastery.
9. Rogers behaviour and the reasons for it.
e) Checking comprehension( 2-3 min.)T: Ill ask students to work with a partner and think which of the fragments
can be associated with the idea of reason and which with chaos.
S: They give answers.
3. Evaluation( 1-2 min.)T: Ill make general and particular remarks to some students who were very
active during the class.
4.Homework(1-2 min.)T: The students will have to write an essay about an imaginary journey on an
island. Write no more that 300 words.
