7/28/2019 Lesson Plan Nearest 10s
1/1
Lesson Planning S
Title: Rounding to a power of ten.
Learning Objectives:
By the end of the lesson:
All students should be able to round an integer to the nearest 10 and 100 using a number line. Most students should be able to round any number to a given power of ten. Some students should be able to determine the upper and lower bound of a number that has been rounded
a given power of ten.Key words: Nearest ten, hundred, thousand, estimate, place value, approximately
Learning Activities
Starter/Introduction
Recap knowledge of place value by arranging decimal numbers in order of size. Students may
need access to a place value grid to help with this. Emphasise which values are tens, hundreds
and thousands as these are used throughout the remainder of the lesson. Have students
present their solutions on mini-whiteboards for assessing their progress.
Development
Use a blank number line for students to place 11 between the two nearest 10s as shown. Posethe question Which ten is eleven nearest to? Ideal response is ten.
Discuss with the students what to do for numbers that fall exactly
halfway. Explain to round the number up. Work through a couple
more examples with the students attempting rounding to the nearest
10 on their mini-whiteboards. Use the interactive Excel file for
additional practise if needed.
Students should be able to work through the questions on the third slide independently. Give
feedback throughout to maintain pace.
Use the problems on the third slide as an extension where the most able could match an
answer to a sum by deciding which power of ten to round to. Students should be encourage
to articulate their reasoning either through class discussion or on mini-whiteboards.
Plenary
The questions on the final slide are intended to extend the concept by working the problem
backwards in order to better understand the accuracy. Work through the first question with the
students then set the other two to be attempted using mini-whiteboards.

Differentiation
More able:
Students could look at rounding to the nearest tenth or one hundredth for decimal numbers. Similar questions to the one in the plenary could be set as an extension task.
Less Able
Students may benefit from writing each number into a place value grid to visualise the power of ten.
Entering each number on to a number enables to visualise its position in terms of which number it is closest
