Class: Social Studies 10-2 Topic: Understanding the History of Globalization Alberta Ed Specific Outcome: Students will explore the foundations of historical globalization (rise of capitalism, industrialization, imperialism and Eurocentrism) My Objective: By the end of the class period my students will be able to compare briefly, contrast and explain mercantilism, capitalism, industrialization, imperialism, Eurocentrism, European worldviews and Aboriginal world views. I Can Statements: I can explain the differences, similarities and relationships between mercantilism, capitalism, industrialisation, imperialism and Eurocentrism. Materials: Hand out printed ready to go (pg. 5 of module 1), be in Computer Lab Set: 1) watch the Planet 51 movie trailer as an engaging introduction to imperialism. Approx. 5 min Presentation: REVIEW – go over simple Canadian history that should be knowledge from previous Social Studies classes in previous years. (French/British taking over, impact on life for Aboriginals) o This allows students to have something to connect new idea to (ex – connecting imperialism directly to Canadian history that they know/relate to) Approx. 5 min MOVIE – ask WHY would we have watched movie, discuss answers o Answer of why: connect movie to the idea that explorer though he was alone, planted flag, believed land to be his own, but in reality there was a whole civilization with a set way of life already living there Approx. 5 minutes EXPLORE – link http://bit.ly/wzTPwh (pull up on smart board to go over with class) o Go over with class (hand out work sheet pg. 5 from module) Approx. 3 minutes o Have students get into groups of three and split up the seven ideas they are to learn about, each student summarizes understanding of idea into one or two sentences o Still in groups students peer teach so that all three students have an understanding of all seven points Approx. 30 minutes Teacher is to be checking in with groups as they work to ensure students understand, and are staying focused

Class: Social Studies 10-2

Closure/Assessment:

Have class come back together as one group and have each group explain to the whole class one

topic. (ex – group 1 will share their two sentence explanation of mercantilism)

Go through all seven ideas and all seven groups

o This allows students to share and compare ideas/understanding and allows teacher to

assess and make sure that everyone understands correctly, redirect students if their

explanations are not correct.

Approx. 15 minutes

Exit Ticket:

students must hand in completed worksheets

this will allow teacher to look over and mark so that if there is confusion with any ideas they can

be address immediately next class
