Course Title: Marketing 1
Specific Topic: Determining Target Market
Reading Assignment:
Marketing Essentials – Chapter 2 Marketing Fundamentals PowerPoint (particularly Target Market slide)
Were those commercials targeting you? Did it work? It is difficult to market to everyone, therefore marketers use target markets to tailor their message to particular audiences. When creating an advertising campaign you have to define your target market.
1. Instruct students to read Target Market handout with close reading (highlight main ideas and annotate in margins).
2. Inform students they will need to know the information in text for the next activity.
3. Ask students what is figurative speech and what is a metaphor. 4. Ask students what a visual metaphor would be/look like. 5. Clarify if necessary. 6. Inform students that they will be completing an activity that will assist
them in determining a target market, which will facilitate their ability to determine the target market for their promotion campaign project.
7. Pass out I‐Cart and Pair Share form for the commercials. 8. Give instructions for I‐Chart (tell students to focus on the various
“graphics” and visual metaphors 9. Show commercials. 10. Have students complete I‐Chart. 11. Monitor work and assist as needed. 12. Split class into pairs. 13. Have pairs share their I‐Chart information and add any new ideas they
gleamed. 14. Instruct students to complete Pair Share forms. 15. Assist as needed. 16. Bring class back together. 17. Have pairs present observations (all partners must share). 18. Have class turn in I‐Charts/Pair Share forms.
