Students learn there is often a delay when an action takes place and when the sound occurs. Explain how it is slower than the speed of light. Teacher will read a picture book about Storms. Book describes how thunder happens after a lightning strike, and how a person can count, by seconds, to determine how far away the storm is. Students will construct a 2-can phone with a sting linked to each. Students learn there is a sound delay when one person talks through the “phone.” Model of Learning: This model may be considered basic skills. What these students learn in this lesson plan may help them later on in life. This lesson plan is very basic and is a good introduction to how sound travels. Science Late Elementary Speed of Sound Objective: Discuss with students the phenomenon of sound travel. Students learn there is often a sound delay after an action takes place. Explain how it is slower than the speed of light.

Science: Early Elementary

Speed of Sound

Objective: Discuss with students how sound travels.

Students learn there is a sound delay when one person talks through the “phone.”

Model of Learning: This model may be considered basic skills. What these students learn in this lesson plan may help them later on in life. This lesson plan is very basic and is a good introduction to how sound travels.

Science Late Elementary

Speed of Sound

Objective: Discuss with students the phenomenon of sound travel. Students learn there is often a sound delay after an action takes place. Explain how it is slower than the speed of light.

Students will brainstorm situations where time delay can be confusing. Examples: lighting and thunder, concerts. Students learn through mathematical equation, that knowing the distance from an action helps to determine the speed sound is traveling. Students will experiment with several different times to obtain consistency.

Language Arts Early Elementary

Objective: Students learn about the Oregon Trail from the Pioneer Days.

Teacher will first introduce The Oregon Trail by reading a book and showing pictures to the students. Teacher will demonstrate to students actual tools and clothing from that time

period. Teacher will pose questions such as: What would you do to survive the weather/difficult terrain when traveling in a covered wagon? What might you eat while on the trail? Students will glue together a nearly pre-constructed covered wagon and color it with crayons.

Model of Discovery: I believe this lesson plan demonstrates active teaching. The lesson plan for the early elementary is more simplistic and direct. A picture book is shown to help the students understand the concept of how pioneers traveled in the 1800’s.

Language Arts Late Elementary

Objective: Students learn about trails from the Pioneer days.

Students will incorporate research, creative writing, and design skills.Working in groups, students will have one student draw a trail name. The group will write a report on that trail. Students will pose questions: When was the trail used? Why did people travel that trail? Students will write final copy and then design a travel brochure on the trail they chose.

Model of Discovery: I also believe this lesson plan demonstrates active teaching. This lesson plan is more complex for the late elementary. Students work in groups demonstrating collaborative skills.
