Upendran Professor Kimberly Schimmel is a Professor of the Sociology of Sport and an affiliate to the Women’s Stud- ies programme at Kent State Univer- sity. She was in Chennai recently to facilitate an MoU between Kent State University (KSU) and SRM Institute of Hotel Management and Catering Technology. In this interview, she talks about what sets KSU’s hospital- ity management programmes apart, work options available to students after completing the course, and more. What are the skills students de- velop while pursuing the pro- grammes and how do they benefit from them? Our Bachelor of Science degree programme in hospitality manage- ment prepares students for careers in major hospitality industry seg- ments. This is done through aca- demic and research programmes, collaborative partnerships, creative approaches, and ethical principles. Graduates earn multiple certifica- tions including ServSafe, First Aid and CPR, and TIPS responsible alco- hol service. Our bachelor’s pro- gramme students also have the op- tion to earn a minor (specialisation) in event planning. The Master of Science pro- gramme in hospitality and tourism management provides an integrated hospitality and tourism graduate education, with an emphasis on re- gional, national, and global implica- tions of the field. Students learn to develop critical analysis skills, re- search abilities, and understand ad- vanced hospitality and tourism is- sues. Graduates are prepared to successfully secure positions of lead- ership in industry or pursue a ter- minal degree in hospitality or tour- ism management. What makes KSU’s hospitality and tourism management programmes stand out? First, ours is the only four-year programme in our state that is ac- credited by the Accreditation Com- mission for Programs in Hospitality Administration, which sets very high industry standards and strin- gent review standards. Also, our programme is one of the few in the United States to host three active student chapters of pro- fessional organisations (convention management, club managements, ETA Sigma Delta international hon- our society) and the only one in the State of Ohio to do so. Our students are required to com- plete internships towards the end of the programme, many of which serve as a “springboard” to paid su- pervisory or management positions upon graduation. We place interns in the top hotels, restaurants and country clubs such as Hilton, Marri- ott, Hyatt, Darden, and Texas Road- house. In addition, students have the op- portunity to be placed in internships in various hospitality properties in Florence, Italy, at Kent State Uni- versity’s Florence campus. We are currently working to ex- pand our international internship placements, which is one of the goals for my current visit to India. What is the significance of the MoU signed between Kent State Univer- sity and SRM Institute of Hotel Management and Catering Technology? Our collaboration with SRM will allow us to explore opportunities for students to immerse themselves in current practices and study future trends in both India and the Unites States. Thus, we can equip students with a more international perspect- ive as they enter the ever-emerging global economy. We also have the in- frastructure at Kent State University to offer faculty exchanges. Does having prior experience be- fore joining a programme help? Absolutely, it does help. However, we do not require prior experience for admission to our programmes. We have structured them so that stu- dents can enter as novices and graduate with internship and leader- ship experience that positions them for immediate employment in the hospitality industry. What are the work opportunities available to students after complet- ing a bachelor’s or master’s programme? Our graduates are employed in various management positions, in- cluding, but not limited to, the fol- lowing titles in hotels, restaurants, country clubs and banquet centres: hotel front office manager, catering and sales manager, food and bever- age director, food distribution sales manager, general manager, restaur- ant manager, banquet manager, hu- man resources and marketing man- ager, clubhouse manager, and event manager. Professor Kimberly Schimmel SPECIAL ARRANGEMENT That people can change in fun- damental ways is not readily accepted by many individuals, even when they are presented with evidence. We tend to think that our personalities are etched in stone, and there is little we can do to change ourselves. So, we expect the school-topper to continue win- ning laurels, the athletic kid to blaze a sporting trail and the timid, shy teenager to remain gawky and awkward. But fast for- ward 25 years and we learn that the first-ranker dropped out of a prestigious college to start a trekking company, the athlete has put on so much weight that we barely recognise our school- mate, while the quiet one whom everybody wrote off is a leading tech entrepreneur. In fact, a belief in our ability to change is linked to innumerable positive outcomes. An article in The New York Times by Jan Hoff- man describes the work of psy- chologist David Yeager who found that a simple intervention can boost students’ ability to cope with stress. Asking students to perform reading and writing exercises that led them to believe that our personalities are malle- able at the start of the academic year turned out to be beneficial to them. Relative to a control group, students who were asked to focus on the fact that people can change, exhibited lower levels of stress and were more confident. New look Psychologist Douglas LaBier sug- gests the following exercise if you want to alter some aspects of yourself. First, identify some qualities that you think you might possess but that have not blossomed for some reason. Then try to imagine what the new you would look like if you exhibited that quality more strongly. What would your daily life be like? How would your rela- tionships change as a result? How would you feel about yourself? Will you view your work through a different lens? Then, in order to make the new image more vivid, write a couple of paragraphs describing yourself. Finally, think about what you need to do on a daily basis to strengthen those dimen- sions of yourself. Just as you would build your body muscles with exercise over a period of time, you can try to make mi- cro-changes to your personality that slowly add up over time. For example, you may be frustrated that you are always late no matter how much you plan ahead. Well, don’t give up so eas- ily. Think about small changes that you can inject into your life. In addition to using your phone alarm as a reminder for various appointments, you can set your watch a few minutes ahead. Also, add ten minutes more when you have to factor in commuting time. Make a to-do list the day be- fore so that you have fewer last- minute surprises. Now, how will people around you react when you show up on time? Can you see the surprise on your boss’ face when you hand in reports before the deadline? Perhaps, your friends will start taking your word about time more seriously. As a result, you may feel more in control of your surroundings and yourself. No matter what aspect we want to change in ourselves, believing that we can is most im- portant. Can I just go to a mutual fund office and buy a mutual fund the way I buy toothpaste from a convenience store? Do I just hand over cash to the person at the mutual fund office counter? Plot your course Well, you see, the world of finance works a little bit differently. Before you embark on your personal finance journey, you need to get organised and check a few boxes. What are these? Firstly, you need to get a bank account for yourself. Even if you are not officially an adult, you can still open a bank ac- count. Do you know that anyone over the age of 10 can open and operate a sav- ings bank account independently, without involving the parents? So, what are you waiting for? Your internship sti- pend will most likely be credited to your bank account through an interbank money transfer. Wouldn’t it be cool to give your own bank account number to the company that you are working for, instead of your parents’ bank account details? PAN number — The permanent ac- count number or PAN would be required pretty much everywhere when you start saving, investing or buying high value items. The youngest PAN card holder is an infant. So, if you don’t have a PAN already, you should apply for one and get it at the earliest. Aadhar number — It is quite likely that your parents had applied on your behalf and got an Aadhar number for you already. If not, you should do this at the earliest as increasingly Aadhar number is mandatory for a whole lot of activities. Do you know that you can start invest- ing as small an amount as ₹500 through the systematic investment plan in mu- tual funds? This is a good way to start in- vesting your internship stipend or money from part-time work or even your surplus pocket money. But before you can start investing, you need to com- plete a process called KYC — short for Know Your Customer (The customer is from the perspective of the mutual fund). Even a short while back, you were required to fill up a boring form, attach proof of residence, proof of identity and so on. But today, we have a process called eKYC, wherein this whole process can be done paperless just by furnishing your PAN and Aadhar number. You just need to fill up a few fields in an online form and you are ready to start your in- vestment journey. So, check these three items off the list and get ready to watch your money grow.
