SIGNFICANCE OF THE BATTLE OF GETTYSBURG The Battle of Gettysburg, fought on July 1-3, 1863, was the turning point of the American Civil War. A Union victory, The Battle of Gettysburg stopped Confederate General Robert E. Lee's second invasion of the North. More than 50,000 men fell as casualties during the three-day battle, making it the bloodiest battle of the American Civil War. Gettysburg could never be forgotten, but its place in American memory was enhanced when President Abraham Lincoln visited the site of the battle four months later, in November 1863. Lincoln was invited to attend the dedication of a new cemetery to hold the Union dead from the battle. He took the opportunity to give a speech which would provide a justification for the war. Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address would become known as one of the best speeches ever delivered. The text of the speech is short yet brilliant, and in less than 300 words it expressed the nation’s dedication to the cause of the war. The famous Gettysburg Address begins, “Fourscore and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.”

TRIP OVERVIEW This custom and exclusive tour will submerge the student of history into the significance and context of the most famous battle of the American Civil War. Conceived and guided by Speaker/Historian Dr. Judy Morley, this interactive, “boots-on-the-ground” tour of the Gettysburg Battlefield will provide valuable lessons in lead-ership, using examples such as how a chance encounter became an opportunity for victory; how an unknown theology professor from Maine used his instinct to save the Union Army; how the greatest general of the era could have avoided deadly battlefield miscalculations that led to the ultimate defeat of his cause; and how President Abraham Lincoln, in a few paragraphs, created meaning out of the battle and redefined America. This unique, one-of-a-kind tour includes 4-nights lodging at the historic Gettysburg Hotel; opening night get-acquainted dinner/tour briefing at the hotel; buffet breakfasts each morning; two box lunches, one hot lunch, and unique multi-course dinners each evening in historic venues, including the Dobbin House Alehouse and Restaurant, est. 1776 (home of a secret underground railroad slave hideout).

The charming and recently renovated Gettysburg Hotel, est. 1797, is located at One Lincoln Square, in the heart of historic down-town Gettysburg, Pennsylvania and is within walking distance to the Gettysburg battlefield, historic area attractions, and many downtown shops and restaurants. In 1955, it became a temporary White House while President Eisenhower recovered from a heart attack in Gettysburg. In 2013, this iconic 119-room hotel, rich in history and hospitable ambiance, was voted “Best Historic Hotel” by Historic Hotels of America. It has received many other coveted awards as well, including “Gettysburg’s Best Hotel” for the past nine consecutive years. Dr. Judy, who has previously stayed here, personally selected this hotel for her upcoming tour of the Gettysburg Battlefield. She appreciates the hotel’s history and location, complimentary high speed wireless Internet, business center and fitness center access, a roof top swimming pool, new flat screen HDTVs, casual dining, and the private dining venue reserved for this group.
