Pastor’s Letter December 28/29 Dear Parish Family, Celebrating the Feast of the Holy Family between Christmas and New Years has always seemed to me to be a good bit of strategy on the part of the church. After all these are the days when most of us gravitate back to those we call family. The real reason, of course, is theological and scriptural. The feast of the Holy Family bridges the gap between the birth of the Lord and his adult ministry which occupies the majority of the Gospels. In a way it answers the question of what Jesus did between the departure of the Shepherds and Magi and the beginning of his public ministry. The answer is simply this: he grew up in a real human family. On Thanksgiving day this year, I shared a poem at mass which captures both the joy and challenges of family life. It expresses how the differences in all those people around us can either be an obstacle or opportunity for gratitude. It was written by a minister named Max Coots and is often called: We Give Thanks for a Bounty of People.

Let us give thanks for a bounty of people: For generous friends, with smiles as bright as their blossoms. For feisty friends as tart as apples; For continuous friends who, like scallions and cucumbers, keep reminding us that we’ve had them. For crotchety friends, as sour as rhubarb and as indestructible; For handsome friends, who are as gorgeous as eggplants and as elegant as a row of corn; and the others as plain as potatoes and as good for you. For friends as unpretentious as cabbages, as subtle as summer squash, as persistent as parsley, as endless as zucchini, and who, like parsnips, can be counted on to see you through the winter. For old friends, nodding like sunflowers in the evening-time. For young friends, who wind around like tendrils and hold us. We give thanks for friends now gone, like gardens past that have been harvested, but who fed us in their times that we might live.

This week’s readings speak to us of gratitude and thankfulness for our families. Take a moment to think of all those that you belong to: your family now, the family you came from, the family of the church, the family of your friends. Be thankful for them whether they be tart as apples or beautiful as blossoms. They are yours. Sincerely your in Christ,

Rev. Michael A. Vetrano

A Note from Religious Education Director

Jennifer Ferrantino A Very Merry and Blessed Christmas to all! The Christmas Pageant was a fantastic way to celebrate Christmas together as a Parish Family! I am so glad that we could share this as a whole parish. The joy in the children’s faces and telling of the story of Jesus’ birth together declares to the world the true meaning of Christmas. I am so impressed and amazed by the students and families who put so much effort and enthusiasm into the pageant. I thank all the students and parents for a job well done. Special Thanks to all of our wonderful Catechists, assistants and helpers who work tirelessly to share the Good News with our students all year long. Many Thanks to our catechists and leaders:

Enjoy your Christmas and New Year Break Our Religious Ed Classes resume Sunday January 5, 2014 or Wednesday January 8, 2014.

What’s New and Exciting: We have received our date for the Sacrament of Confirmation. Bishop Perez will be with us on Tuesday, May 13 at 4:30 to celebrate this important step in the lives of our young people. Our students will begin their final

preparation on Sunday, January 26th with a ceremony of enrollment at the 5 PM mass. Our youth group will be the hosts that night preparing a pasta dinner for our candidates and their sponsors. They will then be busy with regular class meetings, choosing a name, and completing service projects.

Thanks to all those who

made Christmas Beautiful! Christmas was so especially beautiful here at SHJM and I want to say a special word of thanks to all who made it so. To Pam Culver who decorated our church and altar, and who along with Bill and Jose in our maintenance department made everything so perfect this year. To Jim Frankenbach who once again lit our beautiful trees and made our church so welcoming with their light. To all of you who gave so generously to our Christmas Flower collection. And of course to all our ministers. To Jo Ann Morse for directing our choirs and Jack Hanlon for coordinating our ministers. To our lectors, Eucharistic ministers, Altar Servers, Ushers, Cantors, Singers, Presiders, Deacons — you brought such great joy to all God’s people!

By Juan J. Sosa, Pbro., from Today's Liturgy 2014

Sharing the Gospel Imagine Jesus goes to your church today. After church, Mary and Joseph find him on the altar telling stories from the Old Testament to the priests and the Sunday School teachers. Mary and Joseph would be amazed. They would want Jesus to come home. Jesus would love his parents so much that he would go home with them. He will stay with them until he grows older, wiser, and stronger. Prayer Lord, teach me your Bible stories so that I can teach them to others. Something to Draw Draw yourself or Jesus talking to the teachers in your church.

Mission for the Week I will always let my parents know where I am, so they won't worry.
