O Risen Lord, be our resurrection and life: for us and all whom you have made,

for those caught in the grip of sin and addiction, for those who feel forsaken,

for those who live as if you do not, for those who do not believe they need

resurrection and life, in churches that believe they are dying,

in successful churches who don’t know they are dead, in us who know the good but fail to do it, who have not been judged but still judge, who know love but

still live for self, who know hope but succumb to despair,

for those dying of malnutrition and hunger, for those imprisoned unjustly and those

imprisoned justly, for those who live under regimes that seek to crush

all who proclaim Jesus’ resurrection and life, for those in the throes of sickness that leads to death,

in marriages that are disintegrating, for women trafficked and enslaved by the forces of

wickedness, those whose lives are snuffed out in the womb, for anyone anywhere who knows suffering and

death in any form, and for Creation itself, which groans in travail,

in the life we share and the fellowship we enjoy that, filled anew with the wonder of your love and the

power of your grace, one day we will rise to eternal life with You.

Happy Easter to you and your loved ones!

SEEDS OF FAITH

There is a brevity, a certain terseness, in the scripture readings for Easter Sunday. Peter’s speech in Acts is built of direct, pointed sentences. Paul’s letters are based on straightforward creed-like statements. Even the Gospel story only briefly recounts what will turn out to be one of the most remarkable events in human history—the resurrection of Jesus from the dead. Advertising agents call these encapsulated points of information “bullet points.” Scripture scholars call them kerygmata, or “kernels” of our faith. Actually, “kernels” or “seeds” are good terms for these statements, since throughout the Easter season, we will hear in the Acts of the Apostles, the Letters of Paul, and the Gospel accounts of the days following the Resurrection exactly how these kerygmata began to flower, how they continued to grow through the life of the early church. May these Easter “seeds” of faith serve a similar purpose for us, too, so that the life of the Risen Christ will flourish in us and through our witness in the coming days. Copyright © J. S. To Our Dear Beloved Families, We miss you so much! The smiling faces of your children are so precious to us! We pray for your families' health and spiritual growth during this difficult time. We will not

have classes this coming Sunday. Catholic school classes are suspended until April 19th. I have attached, once again, a link to the Archdiocese emergency website. The Archbishop sent out the guidelines for Holy Week in a document that is attached to the link below. Services, including Easter Vigil, will go on, but with the priest and assistants only, no attendees. https://lacatholics.org/emergency/ We await further instructions from our pastor, Fr. Joe Shea. Thank you for your understanding and patience. Please keep us in your prayers, also, for courage, fortitude, and faith. May God bless you and keep you. May He make His face shine upon you and be gracious to you. May He lift His countenance upon you and bring you peace. Please share this message with any other family in the program you may know. With great love and hope, Pauline Simpson Director of Faith Formation St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church Office: 805-526-5513

A nuestras queridas familias, ¡Los extrañamos mucho! Con gran amor y esperanza, Pauline Simpson Director of Faith Formation St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church Office: 805-526-5513

The 40 Days for Life Spring Campaign ran from Ash Wednesday to Palm Sunday. We had 37 new sign-ups. Thank you to the 95 prayer warriors who used the 40 Days for Life calendar to log-in 1,013 hours of prayer! We had more participation from men, more couples, more children under 18, and there were three or more people praying during many of the hours. We can’t imagine how many clients did not pull-into the facility because of our presence. Abby Johnson, the former Planned Parenthood director, says that Planned Parenthood’s statistics were that the no-show rate would go as high as 75% when there is a prayer presence out there.

40 Days for Life is non-denominational. We had more participation from members of at least seven non-denominational churches. Catholic do make up the majority of the volunteers. They came from the nine area parishes, with St. Rose, St. Paschal, and St. Peter Claver members comprising the majority of the volunteers. We also have a volunteer who is a member of the Polish Catholic Church, Our Lady of the Bright Mount in Los Angeles. Thus, one of our firsts were volunteers praying the Rosary together in Polish, Spanish, Romanian and English. We are truly an international group.

Our campaign began with a beautiful Mass celebrated by Fr. Luis Estrada on March 19. For the first time, three seminarians helped serve Mass. For the first time, the Legion of Mary participated by processing the beautiful statue of Mary and led a Rosary outside with lit candles after Mass. The Legion of Mary offered Rosaries outside for the first week or so of the campaign until the rains, winds and cold brought us back inside the church.

Tami of Godspeak Calvary Chapel and the group “Stand in Love,” led a nondenominational worship and praise candlelit opening event, which was attended by over 40 people. A few of those attendees then gave a lot of hours of prayer at the vigil.

We had at least three unconfirmed turnarounds, or babies saved from medication abortions. It appeared that the couples changed their minds, but they did not stop to talk to us on the way out of the parking lot. Some of that is due to shame. I hope that those volunteers who witnessed those turnarounds will someday have the reward of a mom stopping by vigil to show them the baby their peaceful, prayerful presence helped save.

Due to the COVID-19, 40 Days for Life had to suspend their public vigil on Sunday March 22. By March 26, co-leader Janie Beach and I asked our volunteers to pray 24 hours from home instead of 12 hours. By the next day, they met the challenge with 100% coverage which went on for 10-days in-a-row to the end of the campaign. God bless them all!

We also want to thank Father Shea and the Knights of Columbus, Council 5803 for holding a teleconference Novena for Life Rosary from March 27 to April 4. This was another first caused by the unprecedented Corona Virus. There were from 31-40 phones connected, with many couples and families participating. Thanks to Joe and Lorraine Ferrall for requesting this, Lee Olson for hosting it each night, and Father Shea for leading and closing us in prayer.

Because of all this prayer, we started hearing about a no-show from the abortion doctor at Ventura (and no surgical abortions that day), an abortion pill reversal success involving the Life Centers of Ventura, and there was visibly less business at Thousand Oaks. Thanks be to Jesus!

Happy Easter! Leonore Schuetz co-leader Thousand Oaks 40 Days for Life

Miguel Arias, Copyright © J. S.
