At-Home Learning -- Week of March 30, 2020 -- Dakota H.S. Vocal Music, A. Walker

 Let’s watch the Grammys!

There have been a lot of performances on the Grammys since the first ceremony in 1959! Some

of music and pop culture’s most iconic moments, particularly in the last few decades, have happened on the stage of the Grammys. You probably have seen several Grammy performances yourself!

Since the 2010’s decade just ended, this is a great time to reflect on the music of the last decade.

It is either the music of elementary school / middle school for you, or maybe mostly middle school / high school.

On the pages that follow, you will see every Grammy Awards performance, listed by year. Let’s

work on making our individual lists of Top Grammy Performances of the 2010’s!

(continued)

Page 2: Let’s watch the Grammys! · Barbra Streisand " Evergreen " [ 8] Rihanna Drake [ 14] " What's My Name? " Arcade Fire [ 11] " Month of May " " Ready to Start " 2012 Artist(s) Song(s)

(Haha you can’t use this performance though because it was in 2020)

Here are the steps we should follow to make these lists:

● Start with some review: If you know of any Grammy performances from the past, or you have some favorites, watch those videos to review them!

● Then, every day this week, watch 3-5 videos from the lists of performances that are on the following pages. You absolutely can watch more if you want to!

○ (Please note that the hyperlinks do not go to videos of the performances...sorry!) ○ If you don’t know where to start, I recommend watching videos by artists you know

and like! Since we are making lists of our personal Top 5 Performances, you probably don’t need to watch performances by artists you know you are less interested in 😉

○ As you are watching, think about what makes a great performance to you: ■ Some things to consider -- vocal delivery -- stage presence -- quality of

song/composition -- uniqueness of performance elements (set/staging) -- etc.! ● When you come across a performance you love, write 2-3 sentences describing why

you thought it was great! Mention the year of the performance, the performers, and the title of the songs.

● At the end of the week, or over the weekend, reflect on everything you’ve watched this week and make your list of Top 5 Grammy Performances of the 2010’s!!! And let’s share them with each other somehow on Monday (04/06/20).

○ I am going to be making my Top 5 list along with you guys too!

Page 3: Let’s watch the Grammys! · Barbra Streisand " Evergreen " [ 8] Rihanna Drake [ 14] " What's My Name? " Arcade Fire [ 11] " Month of May " " Ready to Start " 2012 Artist(s) Song(s)

If you need a place to start, I will share some of my quick opinions on performances in the past! This is not my Top 5 List, just some comments and opinions if you’re looking for somewhere to start 😊

 Walker’s Miscellaneous 2010’s Grammy Performance Comments 😄

Or Performances Worth Watching (Some of these probably will end up on my Top 5 list, just saying…)

● There are several artists that performed on the Grammys multiple times in the 2010’s! If you are a fan of someone like Taylor Swift or Adele, it would be a cool idea to compare and contrast some of that person’s earlier and later performances of the decade!

● The various “Tributes” are pretty cool also; I like to see how different artists can work together on the same performance, and I like listening to how they arrange a bunch of songs to be performed together!

○ 2010 Tribute to Michael Jackson was very good (even though MJ is problematic at best)...because the singers in this performance are incredible!

○ I love that from 2010-2019, there were two tributes to Dolly Parton, and she ain’t even dead yet! 😆 Not mad though, because I love Dolly!

● 2012 Rihanna / Coldplay performance is awesome ● 2012 Nicki Minaj performance was so controversial, omg...She really got people mad mad

with that one. Watch it and guess why. ● 2015 Pharrell / Lang Lang / Hans Zimmer performance ● Taylor Swift opened the Grammys in 2013 and 2016 and in my opinion...She didn’t

necessarily kill it as the opening act either time. Let me know if you agree/disagree. ● When artists perform multiple times during the decade...Consider how their performances are

similar or different. ○ For example (and I know nobody is going to be surprised by this example, but it’s

because I’m right), Lady Gaga performed on the Grammys 7 different times during this decade.

■ Watch these three videos -- 2010 Duet with Elton John, 2015 Duet with Tony Bennett, 2017 performance with Metallica -- and think about how very different these performances and musical styles are.

○ What does this say about Lady Gaga’s versatility as an artist? Are there other artists we can do this kind of a study with?

● 2011 Justin Bieber performance is so crazy to watch now. ● 2017 The Weeknd / Daft Punk -- Starboy / I Feel It Coming  ● 2018 Rihanna/DJ Khaled/Bryson Tiller -- Wild Thoughts
