We are delighted to bring an exciting new programme of world class arts and cultural events to the town. Letchworth has a thriving arts scene with a vibrant local arts centre, a much loved art deco cinema and a rich variety of workshops, exhibitions and cultural events. With plans afoot this year to convert the Broadway Cinema into a live theatre and a new arts centre scheduled to open in 2017, we believe that an even busier arts and cultural programme will add great value to the world’s first garden city.

If you’re one of the many people who have tickets to Broadway Cinema’s screening of War Horse, I recommend our own production, The Table, on 7th of March at St Francis Theatre. Brought to you by the brilliant Blind Summit, The Table features puppetry every bit as magical as that of War Horse.

Our exciting visual arts exhibition, A Vision of Utopia in collaboration with Digswell Arts Trust, turns the entire town into a gallery with 11 new commissions on show at various iconic sites across Letchworth.

June sees the arrival of Ukrainian-British violist Maxim Rysanov who performs in the Spirella Ballroom with the Russian violin virtuoso Alexander Sitkovetsky, part of a longer term artist residency for a musician who has already graced some of the world’s biggest classical music stages.

Finally, do look out for details of other creative activities taking place across Letchworth. A few selected highlights are listed on pages 22 and 23.

I hope there is something in the programme that interests you and I look forward to seeing you at the events.

WELCOMEWelcome to what I hope

is a terrifically exciting

programme of high

quality theatre, visual

arts and music.

Since its first performance at the National Theatre in 2007, War Horse has become an international smash hit.

Based on Michael Morpurgo’s novel and adapted for the stage by Nick Stafford, War Horse takes audiences on an extraordinary journey from the fields of rural Devon to the trenches of First World War France.

Filled with stirring music and songs, this powerfully moving and imaginative drama is a show of phenomenal inventiveness. At its heart are astonishing life sized puppets by South Africa’s Handspring Puppet Company, who bring breathing, galloping, charging horses to thrilling life on stage.

A Vision of Utopia is set to dazzle Letchworth Garden City with a spectacular display of art installations which will appear across the town throughout March and April with artworks unveiled in stages.

The exhibition created in collaboration with Digswell Arts Trust, sees 11 new commissions from some of the UK’s most innovative artists, who draw their inspiration from Letchworth’s unique heritage. Their work takes many varied forms from projections, textile, sculpture, animation, arts, ceramics and performance in some of Letchworth’s most iconic locations including the Railway Station, Spirella Building, the Fountain, International Garden Cities Exhibition and Broadway Cinema.

Why A Vision of Utopia?

“The original Utopian vision of the town was as a city of the future, enjoying the benefits of both town and country. In pursuing this vision, Letchworth was endowed with some iconic places and buildings which are central to the town’s identity today.

The exhibition seeks to connect the utopian vision of the Garden City, with the town today by reimagining this ideology through a fake ‘archive’ of what could have been and of what might be in the future.”

Moses is a cantankerous 3 man operated puppet with a cardboard head… who lives on a table. Tonight he wants to tell you an epic story about God and Moses, life and death and puppetry… on a table. But he gets easily distracted.

A cross between Tommy Cooper and Eddie Izzard this table-top-puppet-philosopher-cum-stand-up-comedian is the funniest ‘piece of cardboard’ you’ll ever meet.

Just back from a sellout tour of the USA, the team behind the 90 foot Voldemort in the London Olympic Ceremony, brings you a 2 foot high puppet in an unforgettable show.

Royal Opera House Live Cinema Season

First staged in St Petersburg in 1890, The Sleeping Beauty is the pinnacle of classical ballet: a perfect marriage of Petipa’s choreography and Tchaikovsky’s music and a glorious challenge for every dancer on stage. It is also The Royal Ballet’s signature work.

To mark the Company’s 75th birthday in 2006, Monica Mason and Christopher Newton revitalised its landmark 1946 production, which re-established Petipa’s choreography as recorded by Imperial

Ballet régisseur Nicholas Sergeyev, to a scenario and staging developed by Ninette de Valois herself, founder of The Royal Ballet.

With Oliver Messel’s gorgeous original designs wonderfully re-imagined by Peter Farmer, and additional choreography by Anthony Dowell, Christopher Wheeldon and Frederick Ashton, today’s Sleeping Beauty not only captures the mood of the original but shows that this is very much a living work for The Royal Ballet, growing and changing with the Company while celebrating its past.

A highly acclaimed award-winning show for children that uses a unique blend of mime, puppetry, live and recorded music, and animation to present an exploration of the next and oldest frontier: the deep blue sea.

Seas have risen, billions have died. Alvin Sputnik is our only hope. He must venture to the bottom of the ocean to find his wife’s lost soul and save humanity.

Direct from sellout seasons in New York, Sydney, and Auckland this multi award-winning piece of heartwarming “theatrical magic” (Sunday Mail) is a one-man micro-epic about enduring love and the end of the world. “…akin to a theatrical Wall-E” (New York Times).

Following his delightful full-length ballet Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, Christopher Wheeldon continues his highly successful collaboration with designer Bob Crowley and composer Joby Talbot to create his first ballet based on a Shakespeare play, the late romance The Winter’s Tale.

The story follows the destruction of marriage through consuming jealousy, the abandonment of a child, and a seemingly hopeless love. Yet through remorse and regret – and after a statue comes miraculously to life – the ending is one of forgiveness and reconciliation.

It is powerful material for ballet, with a story that allows for the portrayal of intense emotions between and within the characters, and the opportunity for the Company to create not just new central characters but the whole world around them.

KING LEAR (Theatre)Thursday 1 May, 19:00 Live broadcast at Broadway Cinema

Tickets: £15 Includes a glass of wine or soft drink

To buy tickets visit the Broadway Cinema Box Office or book online at www.broadway-cinema.com

Academy Award winner Sam Mendes returns to the National Theatre to direct Simon Russell Beale in the title role of Shakespeare’s tragedy.

An aged king decides to divide his kingdom between his three daughters, according to which of them is most eloquent in praising him. His favourite, Cordelia, says nothing. Lear’s world descends into chaos.

Following his production of Richard II in October 2013, RSC Artistic Director Gregory Doran continues his exploration of Shakespeare’s history plays with Henry IV Parts I and II, an epic, comic and thrilling vision of a nation in turmoil.

RSC Associate Artist Antony Sher returns to the Company to play the infamous comic knight Falstaff. He is joined by Jasper Britton as Henry IV and Alex Hassell as Prince Hal. Jasper returns following his performance as the Marquis de Sade in Marat/Sade (2011); Alex returns to the RSC following his recent credits in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Cardenio and The City Madam.

With his crown under threat from enemies both foreign and domestic, Henry IV prepares for war. Having deposed the previous king, he is only too aware of the tenuousness of his position, and of the price to be paid if he falters.

As his father prepares to defend his crown, Prince Hal is languishing in the taverns and brothels of London, revelling in the company of his friend, the notorious Sir John Falstaff. With the onset of the war, Hal and Falstaff are thrust into the brutal reality of the battlefield, where Hal must confront his responsibilities to family and throne.

Known for his dazzling performance at BBC’s Last Night of the Proms, Maxim Rysanov has quickly established himself as one of the world’s most vibrant and charismatic classical musicians.

Beginning his studies in Moscow, Maxim’s journey to Letchworth is not so much ‘From Russia with Love’ rather, from Russia to Letchworth via some of the world’s greatest musical stages.

This concert, the first of a series, is performed in partnership with the great Russian violin virtuoso Alexander Sitkovetsky and features works by Bach and Mozart. Staged in the round in the Spirella Ballroom, this intimate concert promises to be Hertfordshire’s musical highlight of the year.

Pip, a seven year-old orphan boy, visits his mother’s grave. A frightening encounter with an escaped convict begins a series of events that will change his life forever.

Written by one of England’s greatest authors, Charles Dickens, Great Expectations is the profound and complex story of Pip’s journey through life. Some of his most memorable characters – the terrifying Magwitch, Joe Gargery the kind and generous blacksmith, the eccentric Miss Havisham, the cold and beautiful Estella, – are vividly brought to life in this anarchic and joyful telling of this glorious tale.

Using Dickens’ original text (well, mostly!), David Mynne takes you on a journey that brings you a ‘cast of thousands’ in a skilful, one-man adaptation of this epic story.

A riotous exposure of entrepreneurial greed by Olivier Award-winning playwright Alan Ayckbourn (Bedroom Farce, A Chorus of Disapproval). A Small Family Business returns to the National Theatre for the first time since its celebrated premiere in 1987, when it won the Evening Standard Award for Best New Play.

Jack McCracken is a man of principle in a corrupt world. But not for long. Moments after taking over his father-in-law’s business he’s approached by a private detective armed with some compromising information. Jack’s integrity fades away as he discovers his extended family to be thieves and adulterers, looting the business from their suburban homes. Rampant self-interest takes over and comic hysteria builds to a macabre climax.

Following its smash-hit live broadcast in 2012, the National Theatre production of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time returns to cinemas.

Based on the acclaimed novel by Mark Haddon, adapted by Simon Stephens and directed by Marianne Elliott, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time has been hailed by The Times as ‘a phenomenal combination of storytelling and spectacle’. Winner of 7 Olivier Awards in 2013, including Best New Play.

Christopher, fifteen years old, has an extraordinary brain – exceptional at maths while ill-equipped to interpret everyday life. When he falls under suspicion of killing Mrs Shears’ dog Wellington, he records

each fact about the event in the book he is writing to solve the mystery of the murder. But his detective work, forbidden by his father, takes him on a frightening journey that upturns his world.

Royal Opera House Live Cinema Season

This early Puccini masterpiece makes a welcome return to Covent Garden after an absence of over 20 years, in a new production by Jonathan Kent under the baton of Music Director Antonio Pappano.

The exciting Latvian soprano Kristine Opolais sings the title role. A consummate Puccini soprano, Opolais caused a sensation as Madama Butterfly in 2011, and with Manon Lescaut, the bold but impressionable heroine, we will see a very different side of her character. She is matched in star power by Jonas Kaufmann as her lover, Des Grieux, and Christopher Maltman as her cynical brother Lescaut.

This is a much anticipated new production, and Kent’s vision of a young girl who faces temptation in the big city will surely resonate with today’s audience.

King Henry’s health is failing as a second rebellion threatens to surface. Intent on securing his legacy, he is uncertain that Hal is a worthy heir, believing him more concerned with earthly pleasures than with the responsibility of rule.

Meanwhile, Falstaff is sent to the countryside to recruit fresh troops. Among the unwitting locals,

opportunities for embezzlement and profiteering prove impossible to resist as Falstaff gleefully indulges in the businessof lining his own pockets.

As the King’s health continues to worsen, Hal must choose between duty and loyalty to an old friend in Shakespeare’s heartbreaking conclusion to this pair of plays.
