Although Derck & Edson Associates has been working on college and university campuses since the 1940s, we still often address the question, what do you do? Making the outdoors great is our mission and one of the markets we serve the most is higher education. In general terms, we help to plan for the future needs of campuses, we assist in building and enhancement projects, and we also contribute to the sports and recreational needs of our higher education clients.

Derck & Edson Associates is a firm of landscape architects, civil engineers, and land planners who have the skills and experience to work with you to develop an attractive and functional campus environment. We provide innovative and creative solutions that will make your campus a source of pride now and in the years to come.

Derck & Edson Associates provides master planning services for overall campuses, athletics, landscape, and wayfinding. In all our master planning efforts, we advocate an inclusive process that engages the campus community and stakeholders. In this way, our plans are more readily embraced and implemented.

We refer to our approach as Campus Centered because it starts with an understanding that the campus community is our partner in developing the master plan and, in the end, is the ultimate stakeholder in the decisions and direction set by the plan.

Landscape architects are integral to planning and design when a new building, or building addition, is in the works. For example, the practice of site design and planning considers the effects a proposed building’s orientation may have on heating and cooling the building, the amount of earthwork that will be required to provide a level site, and the relationship of the building to other buildings or site elements such as walkways, parking lots, existing utilities, or trees.

In addition, when the style of a new building departs from established norms on a campus, it can be a challenge to create that cohesive campus feeling, but the design of the site features can pull varying architectural styles together to help maintain the feeling of campus unity.

We can help you with your building projects through the selection and design of your location, permitting and parking, NPDES, earthwork, accessibility, utilities, hardscape, landscape, site lighting, and site furnishings.

We have all heard the statistics about first impressions and their impact on prospective students’ likelihood to choose your campus to call home for their college career. Just as important are the current students, faculty, and staff who experience your learning and living environment, every day. Consider all the components that work in conjunction with your buildings to create the special place that is your campus. For example, think of your campus circulation system, both vehicular and pedestrian. Now consider the identifiable places and spaces that exist outside your campus architecture. What about the physical elements that impact your image and identity? And finally, think of the living landscape. Working with each of these components can be a cost effective way to greatly enhance your entire campus. It is not necessary to take on all of the components at once, but rather look at your campus and determine which areas need enhancement and which areas could make an immediate impact on the quality of life for your population.

The planning, design, and construction of campus athletic fields and facilities requires a firm with specialized skills. Derck & Edson Associates can address the various facets of these projects including everything from the need for long-term, balanced planning to the ability to keep up with the changes in products for turf and track surfaces. Our clients compete in a variety of athletic conferences and have some of the premier facilities available.

We have planned, designed, and developed venues for track and field, football, baseball, multi-purpose fields, field hockey, lacrosse, intramural sports, tennis, and softball.
