Cefalexin(CAS NO:15686-71-2) is used to treat a number of infections including: otitis media, streptococcal pharyngitis, bone and joint infections, pneumonia, cellulitis, and urinary tractinfections. It may be used to prevent bacterial endocarditis, it may also be used for other purposesnot listed in this medication guide.
In addition to being a rational first-line treatment for cellulitis, Cefalexin(CAS NO:15686-71-2) isa useful alternative to penicillins in patients with penicillin hypersensitivity. In patients with mildor questionable history of penicillin allergy, cephalasporins are now thought to be relatively safe.
Caution should always be taken when prescribing cephalosporins to those with strong history oftrue penicillin hypersensitivity. However, because cefalexin and other first-generationcephalosporins are known to have a modest cross-allergy in patients with penicillinhypersensitivity.
Cefalexin may not be effective against bacteria that incorporate a gene for beta-lactamase on theirR-plasmid as the beta-lactam ring is present in the chemical structure of cephalosporin derivatives.
Do not use Cephalexin if you are allergic to cephalexin or to similar antibiotics, such as Ceclor,Ceftin, Cefzil, Duricef, Fortaz, Omnicef, Spectracef, Suprax, and others. Before using cephalexin, tell your doctor if you are allergic to any drugs (especially penicillins), or if you have kidney orliver disease, a stomach or intestinal disorder such as colitis, diabetes, or if you are malnourished.
It is important for you to keep a written list of all of the prescription and nonprescription(over-the-counter) medicines you are taking, as well as any products such as vitamins, minerals, orother dietary supplements. You should bring this list with you each time you visit a doctor or ifyou are admitted to a hospital. It is also important information to carry with you in case ofemergencies.
Take Cephalexin for the entire length of time prescribed by your doctor; your symptoms may getbetter before the infection is completely treated. Cephalexin will not treat a viral infection such asthe common cold or flu.
Keep all appointments with your doctor and the laboratory. Your doctor will order certain lab teststo check your response to cephalexin. If you are diabetic, use Clinistix, or TesTape (not Clinitest)
to test your urine for sugar while taking this drug.
