time a day do you spend talking or sms’ing? What are the advantages and disadvantages of being accessible 24/7 by a mobile phone? Discuss.

2. Do you use Skype? If yes, do you use a web camera? Is it different for you when you see the person you are speaking to? If so, how? Is it different to see someone in person on a web camera than face-to-face? How so?

3. If there is a complicated matter to be sorted out with someone, do you prefer to make a phone call or do you prefer to write a text message or send an e-mail? Why?

4. Are there certain gestures, icons, or other private language that you and your friends use in communicating with each other with mobile and digital devices (e.g. emotion icons, slang, shortened text, nicknames for each other, etc.)?

GROUP DISCUSSION

1. What kinds of holidays are celebrated in the Czech Republic? Explain what is the origin of each holiday and what people typically do on that day. Is there a bank holiday in the Czech Republic that is celebrated as it is in England?

2. If you had guests from abroad who wanted to come to celebrate a Czech national holiday with you, which one would you recommend they come for? What part of your town would you show them? Which sight in particular? Why? On the other hand, which parts would you rather hide from them? Why? Where would you go in the evening? Discuss with your classmates.

TEAMWORK

1. PREPARE: In a small group of 3 or 4 people, create a plan for a 2-day conference that you would like to attend yourselves.

2. What topic would you want to explore? Who would participate? What would it be about? What activities would you organize? What would you need to do to get the word out so that others would attend, too? Would there be a fee to register? Where would the conference be held? What kinds of tours or sightseeing could be done in the area?

3. RESEARCH and DEVELOP your ideas as much as possible to present to the other groups.

PRESENT YOUR PROPOSALS

4. ROLE PLAY: Imagine that you are pitching your idea to a team of conference managers who will produce the best idea. Present your conference proposal to them. Which idea is the best?

5. REFLECT: What kinds of challenges did your group encounter in preparing your proposal? What are the advantages and disadvantages of working together as a group? Did you like what your group came up with. What did you like about the other groups? Which idea was the most realistic to actually implement? Did the video help you plan your proposal?
