An American author has said that ““ These are strong words that have a special resonance in all

walks of life and moreover in today’s context, they ring true when it comes to the health of our country, and the health of every Indian. It is up to each one of us to take charge and make a difference instead of waiting for the next person to do it for us. We stand at a critical juncture – an investment in the future of our healthcare is not just judicious but is also imperative.

The process of recharging and nurturing our health has to start at the very building blocks of our nation's society – The Apollo SHINE initiative has been envisioned with the clear objective of taking the tenets of healthy living to our schools, and to sow the seeds of good health among the youth of India when they are at their most impressionable age.

Habits are stronger than steel. With Apollo SHINE, we aim to inculcate habits of discipline, focus and moderation that will lead to a lifetime of good health. We aspire to create young ambassadors of wholesome living who will catalyze a healthier dawn for our country. Special emphasis will be placed on the most vital facets of childhood and teenage health like nutrition, exercise & well being.

Apollo SHINE will be a comprehensive programme that will seek to identify and treat common health problems at an early stage, as well as be completely equipped to handle all sorts of medical emergencies that might arise in the school environment. The initiative places a huge premium on the mental health of the child, and is equipped with deep expertise to handle the same.

For a long time we took health for granted, we had misplaced faith that youth and robust health were tightly synonymous. Reality has revealed that this was a naive misconception. Childhood obesity is a stark reality. Younger people are falling prey to lifestyle ailments.

The time to act is now. The benefit we will reap from it is forever!

it is far easier to build strong children than repair broken men.

Surveys conducted at schools, have revealed that an impractical diet of junk food and lack of exercise is leading to a generation of obese youth.

It is imperative that parents and schools join hands to emphasise on the importance of a balanced diet and proper physical activity - a hearty combination that can keep both the mind and body very healthy.

Schools play a critical role in a child's growth and well-being by establishing a safe and supportive environment with policies and practices that support healthy behavior. Early diagnosis and treatment can aid in preventing, controlling and correcting problems that can interfere with a child's learning, recreation and self-attitude. Academic success has been repeatedly linked to a child's health.

Urban India is in its transitional phase. Nuclear families, working parents and changes in food habits have led to a rise in serious health issues amongst children consuming too much fast food. There is an urgent need to create awareness amongst parents and children on the implications of an unhealthy diet.

Schools are centres of learning and can naturally take over the baton of healthcare education. When this information is spread from schools, both students and parents will treat it with the seriousness it deserves. Schools thus play a particularly critical role by establ ishing a safe and support ive environment with policies and practices that support healthy behavior.

COMMON HEALTHPROBLEMS AMONGSTSCHOOL CHILDREN

WHO says unintentional injuries and accidents, such as those caused by burns, falls, poisoning, drowning and road traffic are the leading cause of significant disability in children. Schools have to be geared to handle sports injuries, playground and laboratory mishaps. Personal hygiene, hand-washing have to be reinforced over and over again.

Tooth decay, one of the most common diseases in childhood is rampant resulting in pain, tooth loss and can interfere with speech, learning, play, etc.

WHO reportsWHO reports

Childhood obesity has more than doubled in children and quadrupled in adolescents in the past 30 years. In urban India, 21.4% of adolescent boys and 18.5% of girls are overweight or obese . Obese children and adolescents are likely to be obese as adults too and this leads to a bevy of associated health problems.

Posture related disorder in preadolescent age group is also common due to present day sedentary lifestyle. Consequently back pain in children is also on the rise. The sooner the problem is identified, there can be more time for treatments like guided postural exercise etc., that would help in correction of the postural deviation and pain reduction.

Psychological and adolescent problems manifest themselves through behavioral change. Adolescence is marked by immense turmoil in emotional and behavioral spheres. Healthy adulthood depends upon successful resolution of these problems.

Lazy eye is a problem that develops when the child uses only one eye. The other eye is neglected due to disuse and becomes "Lazy." The medical term for "Lazy eye" is Amblyopia and it afflicts 8.3- 10% of children. Good news however is that Amblyopia can be treated successfully at any age, key is early identification.

Exam stress is a rising problem in our society today. There is a lot of pressure on children to do their best and get good results and the stresses and strains of school life can sometimes get on top of them. If a child is already experiencing emotional problems or mental health difficulties, exam stress can be the last straw. Rising number of suicides by school children is evidence of this.

Iron deficiency is the most common nutritional disorder. Untreated anemia can cause physical weakness, fatigue, poor concentration, irritability and decline in school performance.

Asthma and allergies are a common problem world wide. There is also a lack of recognition of the early signs of asthma . Children with poor asthma control often falter in studies and limit their physical activity .

Skin and hair problems are all too frequent and need to be addressed early in an aggressive manner-dandruff, acne, lice, eczema, hypopigmentation, impetigo, photosensitivity, etc.

Vision problems affect one in four school age children. Visual anomalies like refractive errors, squint, vitamin A deficiency, allergic conjunctivitis and so on can have profound implications on school performance and recreation.

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorders, autistic behavior, dyslexia and other learning disorders are often labeled as bad behavior and can go undetected if children are not checked specifically for these problems.

APOLLO AS A WELLNESS PARTNERSHINE or the Apollo ‘Student Health Initiative through Neighborhood Engagement’ is aimed at equipping schools with the ability to ensure the wellness of our children now and in the future.

Towards this end, we offer three well-defined healthcare programmes, details of which are presented in the following pages.

General Health

- Body Mass Index or BMI is a great indicator of the child’s health. There is an optimal weight : height ratio. If the child is found to be overweight or underweight or even having a tendency towards either of these conditions, this can be detected and brought to the notice of parents.

- A quick, yet thorough examination that can bring to light any issues that a child may have. For instance eyesight problems or lazy eye syndrome may be detected during this examination.

- An examination that detects any skin or respiratory problems that the child may be prone to. This helps to detect problems early and take preventive measures.

- Foundation for a healthy body is laid in childhood. Our body begins to indicate prospective problems at a very early age. Professional health care givers are able to observe and detect these signs and ensure that preventive measures are taken.

Health Consultant:

Children are fearless and eager to explore. This unfortunately results in lot of accidents - even at school. To combat this, a highly trained Apollo Hospitals nurse/paramedic will be stationed at the Apollo kiosk, and he/she will ensure that children get immediate attention and first aid. In case of a medical emergency the paramedic will immediately summon a special pediatric ambulance.

While the health kiosk takes care of a child’s physical health, trained health professionals will be present at school during health checks and health talk, to counsel the children and help them handle any mental pressures that they feel. For instance, combating exam stress, adolescent issues including emotional and behaviorial problems, angst, depression and plenty more.

SHINE 3 is a value-added programme which helps schools establish the highest standards of healthcare within their campus. In addition to all the services available in SHINE 1 and 2, this programme offers the incredible benefits of a health kiosk and trained health professional stationed at school. Parents can be assured that their child is in safe hands. Always!
