The whole state of Tasmania is on the same time zone – Eastern Standard Time (EST). This is the same time zone as Melbourne, Sydney, Canberra and Brisbane! Adelaide and Darwin are half an hour behind Tasmania. Perth is two hours behind. Daylight Savings begins on October 5 2014 in Tasmania, and will conclude on April 5 2015.

The Tasmanian weather varies according to location. The North West and North East are quite temperate with Summer temp (15-28) and Winter (5-15). It can get quite windy. The West Coast is cooler and wetter. The East Coast is warmer during summer and can have very cold nights during winter. Hobart’s summer temp range is 12-25 and in winter 3-12 on most days.

Hobart is Australia’s most southerly capital and one of the most picture perfect cities in the world. With towering Mt Wellington standing guard over the city, it has spectacular views, a real nautical feel and the sandstone buildings provide an olde worlde appearance to this modern multicultural town.

As you walk along Constitution Dock amongst the fishing boats you get the feel that you could be anywhere on the Mediterranean. The old warehouses were once factories that employed thousands making jam for IXL or packing apples to be shipped around the world. Now they house hotels and world class restaurants. They provide a great centrepiece that fuses together the old and the new Hobart Town.

The imposing figure of Mt. Wellington is always visible and is certainly worth exploring. The road is sealed and is kept in great condition. The whole family will love the breathtaking scenery. The aquatic nature of Hobart means you will find lots of small marinas crowded with yachts and dinghys dotted all around the coves and little bays of the city that are normally accompanied by grassy parks or playgrounds that provide a great picnic spot.

Head east to the Tasman Peninsula for a taste of convict life or south to the fabulous Huon area or catch a ferry across to Hobart’s playground, Bruny Island - Whatever your style or pace, Hobart is a great base for exploring what makes Tassie great!

Who said: “You don’t get something for nothing?”Let LetsGoKids show you how to spend a day or even a week in or around Hobart ‘on the cheap’ where you can see and do lots..... and spend nothing!!! (Or just a little). So what are you waiting for? Round up a posse and get out there and do it!

1. Walk down through Salamanca Place to get a feel for the “Old Hobart” – Go on a Saturday morning and experience the “New Hobart” as the whole area comes to life with the world famous Salamanca Market. Food and entertainment as well as stalls galore!.

2. Go for a walk through the historic Battery Point area. Check out the quaint shops and tiny cottages.

3. Take the drive up to Mt. Wellington (25 mins). One of the world’s truly great views. There is an indoor observatory. You may even see snow up there and build a snowman! There are not many places that have such a tall mountain overlooking their CBD like this! You can see almost 100km on a clear day.

4. Book into Hobart Bush Adventures (costs a little) and experience environmental focussed adventures and activities in the local bushland reserves.

5. Head to the Tasmanian Museum . You won’t be disappointed. Lots of hands-on stuff for the kids!

6. The Maritime Museum (costs a little) across the road tells of Hobart’s early seafaring history.

7. Anglesea Barracks just up the road in Davey St has an Army Museum with lots of artifacts.

8. Stroll the Botanic Gardens and have a ride on the carousel or take in one of their awesome family events.

Kids of all ages love to play. Hobart has some great parks and gardens where the whole family can walk, run, swim, climb, ride or picnic, get up close and personal with animals or just sit still and watch the world go by. The city is blessed with choices.

Hobart:

Aberdeen Street:

A popular park which provides access for both the residents of the Glebe area and visitors to the Queens Domain. The playground is located on Aberdeen St and is close to the Domain Tennis Centre and TCA.The playground contains spring riders, a slide, combination units and a see-saw. It has an electric BBQ which has generous shelter.

Caldew Park:

Known as the ‘Train Park’ on the corner of Hill and Warwick Sts in West Hobart. This park has swings, a unique train bridge, a play train and a tricycle track. It includes dedicated play areas for younger and older children. The site has electric BBQ facilities as well as public toilets.

Did You Know? There’s even a road safety bike track designed to encourage children’s road safety awareness using real life traffic systems. So you can take your own bikes and teach the kid’s the road rules in a safe environment!

Kingston:

Dru Point at Margate has a playground designed for children of all abilities. One of the focal points of the playground is the wheelchair swing, also known as the ‘Liberty Swing’.

Clarence:

Bellerive Beach Park is the perfect place to relax and enjoy a long walk, away from the hustle and bustle of the city. This park is very popular. It has play equipment and plenty of room to move.

Glenorchy:

Montrose Community Foreshore on the Brooker Hwy, along the Derwent foreshore is great! Take your kite, kayak, sailboat or just watch it happen as you laze around in the sun on the grassy verges. The accessible playground, cycle path, exercise, kite flying area, electric BBQ’s and picnic shelters provide variety for a great day.

We’re fortunate that Tasmania is one of the most beautiful places on Earth; it’s compact, diverse, wild and accessible. Tasmania has 19 national parks and many of these are within a short distance of the major population centres of Launceston, Hobart, Burnie and Devonport.

There’s no shortage of activities to enjoy as a family or with groups of friends. The 60 Great Short Walks are all within easy reach of the main visitor destinations and include a variety of grades and distances, from half hour walks to half-day and full day walks.

Some locations seem to have it all. Freycinet, which along with Mt Field, has been a mecca for Tasmanians and visitors since it was reserved as a national park in 1916 is one such location. It’s on the East Coast, an easy drive from both Launceston and Hobart, and being on the East Coast, it’s just that bit warmer than Hobart and areas further south – a significant attraction during winter.

Winter is a great time to visit Freycinet as the summer crowds have gone. The water is still sparkling and beaches such as; Richardsons at Coles Bay, the Friendly Beaches and Sleepy Bay, are there to call your own. Kids and adults both find beaches endlessly fascinating for checking out the variety of shells, the kelp and other marine vegetation that washes up, along with fascinating life in the rock pools. The water may be too cold for swimming, but dodging the incoming waves is still fun.Phot

In the south, Mt Field, the state’s other oldest national park, has a timeless appeal. Just about everyone loves a waterfall, and the beautiful Russell Falls is only a 10 minute stroll from the Visitor Centre on a level track that’s suitable for strollers. Call in and say hello to the folks at the Waterfalls Cafe, they have a reputation for great coffee! The road up to Lake Dobson takes the visitor through a forest of incredibly tall swamp gums, with the opportunity to take in another 60 Great Short Walk, the Tall Trees walk. At Lake Dobson, walking through the tall pandanis (also one of the 60 Great Short Walks) that ring the lake is like entering a prehistoric world.

These two parks are just a taste of what Tasmania’s parks and reserves have to offer and it’s all right in our own backyard. For more information go to www.parks.tas.gov.au

Launceston has a relaxed feel and is compact in size with no activity or location too far away. This makes it an ideal city to explore by foot or bike, or visitors can choose to take

advantage of The ‘City Explorer’ and ‘River Explorer’ FREE Tiger buses that provide families, shoppers and visitors with easy transport

around the City Centre and to key attractions around town. It operates

from Monday to Friday. Grab a copy of the current timetable from

the council and major tourist or recreation facilities in Launceston.

A must see is the magnificent Cataract Gorge Reserve, a stunning natural beauty only a 15 minute walk from the city centre. You can take a ride on the Southern Hemisphere’s longest single-plan chairlift, marvel at the Peacocks showing off their colours in the Cliff Grounds, take a dip in the swimming pool, hangout in the playground or have a picnic on the lawns of the Fairy Dell, go for a walk on one of the many trails across the suspension bridge to one of the many look-outs.

You can also explore it from the other side with an excellent guided boat cruise with Tamar River Cruises (see voucher below). Learn the history of the city as well!

A short drive north of Launceston the valley is actually on both sides of the river and is referred to as East and West Tamar. West Tamar has the towns of Exeter, Beaconsfield and Beauty Point which all have much to offer families.

The West Tamar really is one big playground. Starting in Riverside you have the pool centre with waterslide, kids pools and olympic sized main pool, Tailrace Park with a kid friendly maze, BBQ, playground and loads of space to run around.

Worth a look!Dubbed the “Serengeti of Tasmania”, Narawntapu is one of the best places in Tasmania to view wildlife ducks, waders, sea birds, honeyeaters and in the dry eucalypt forests, impressive black cockatoos and brilliant green rosellas. The park also boasts a rich array of easily observed animals that come out in the evening to graze on the grasslands.

Next stop is the Beaconsfield Mine and Heritage Centre (see voucher below) with tunnels, animal hunts, gold panning and lots of buttons to push, levers to pull and hands on displays. 5 minutes away, you can double up at Beauty Point and see the platypus and echidnas at Platypus House (see voucher p.45) and seahorses, hermit crabs, starfish and other cool fish at Seahorse World (see voucher p.45).

The Great Western Tiers begin in Westbury and lead you on a journey through Deloraine, Chudleigh, Mole Creek and then on into the hills of Cradle Country and the towns of Railton, Sheffield, Wilmot and Gunns Plains.

Westbury

The most English of all villages in Australia, it has everything a cliched English Village has. The village green is said to be the only true village green in Australia. Lots of tree-lined streets, old courtyards and stables, elegant old inns and so many charming houses the visitor could easily spend a day just walking around the streets. Make sure when you are in town that you ‘get lost’ in the maze (see above) but find yourself in time to enjoy lunch or morning tea.

Also take the kids for a ride on an old steam engine at Pearn’s Steam World. Get a photo at the unique entrance to Westbury’s Cricket oval.

Deloraine

Take time to explore 410 South Salmon Farm where you can experience a self-guided walk through diverse vegetation including wetland and woodland areas. View the fish farm and keep an eye out for platypus on the nature trails.

“Location, location, location!”, it’s the Central Coast’s “geographic centrality” that makes it a great place for visitors to stay.

Bordered by Penguin, Ulverstone, Turners Beach, Forth and Gunns Plains, the Central Coast is gifted with an abundance of natural beauty. Leven Canyon and caves to the south, which are surrounded by rich red agricultural lands, Penguin - with its distinctive beachside look and feel, and Ulverstone the administrative centre - both attract visitors with shops and stores selling locally grown produce and locally crafted giftware.

Ulverstone’s recently completed Wharf Precint makes a perfect place to park and enjoy the river, shared pathways and playgrounds. The main street and all its shopping delights is only minutes away.

Nestled on the shore of Emu Bay, Burnie (pop 20,000) enjoys a cool temperate climate, in an environment that is perfect for dairy, cropping and timber production.

For 75 years Burnie was a paper town, but mass production ceased in 2010, and the factory structures are being slowly absorbed by the city. Manufacturing and the deep water port keep industry humming but it’s the locally made cheese and whisky that’s attracting attention. Tasmanian cheese can be tasted at The Cheese Shop and single malt whisky is made at Hellyers Road Distillery. Gorgeous gardens like Annsleigh and Emu Valley Rhododendron Garden welcome visitors, and Emu Valley boasts a climate so temperate that all the world’s known rhododendrons can be grown together in their garden.

Burnie has a gorgeous sandy beach at the end of the shopping district which is linked to the Visitor Centre by boardwalk. In the evenings from October to March little penguins waddle ashore to nest in their burrows and volunteers run free interpretive tours.

Working artists, making unique treasures can be found at Makers’ Workshop, along with a gallery shop selling Tasmanian gifts, the cheese shop, a café, the Visitor Information Centre and paper making tours.

There are cafes, galleries and interesting shops in town and the hills hide beautiful parks, waterfalls, trout fishing and wildlife.
