The Peninsula has long been the summer playground of Melbourne’s families.
It features literally kilometres of safe bay beaches perfect for swimming, a bit of beach cricket and sandcastling. It is so close to Melbourne that many people commute and the new freeways and ring road allow very easy access. (The kids
won’t even have time to ask “Are we there yet?”) There are loads of activities on and off the water, including nature walks, biking, swimming with seals & dolphins, mini golfi ng, trampolining, carnivals, wineries, surf beaches and our favourite - picking strawberries at Sunny Ridge (ad below - try the ice-cream!)There is something for everyone - Come for a day or come for a month!

Phillip Island is only an hour and a half drive from Melbourne CBD and is easily accessed from the north and east via the new Ring Road.
Most people think "penguins" when they hear the words "Phillip Island", and whilst these cute little guys form an important part of the island's fabric, there is much, much more to this 230km2 island.

The main town on the island is Cowes, which has supermarkets, shops, banks, restaurants, plenty of takeaways and accommodation.
Down the end of the main street is the wharf. It is home to Wildlife Cruises (voucher p.31) (and also a good spot to eat your fish and chips), who offer a number of “eco-cruises” for a different look at the island.
Of course the reason most people visit Phillip Island is to watch the nightly little Penguin Parade (voucher p.31). There is nothing quite as electric as the
moment you spot your first little penguins surfing in on a wave, then waddling purposefully through the twilight and heading straight towards you on their way home. A world famous attraction!
An activity the kids always love is to go fishing - they get even more excited when they catch something!!! On the island there is Rhyll Trout and Bush Tucker Farm (p.33) where friendly fishing instructors will teach you to catch rainbow trout in a picturesque tree-lined lake and the all-weather indoor “Rainforest Pool”. Take your catch with you or ask the chef to transform your trout into a magnificent meal.

When you think of Ballarat, most people think that all it has to offer is Sovereign Hill!
HOWEVER, there is much, much more to this city that was built on gold.
It has activities and attractions to keep you entertained and challenged for much more than a day. It has some excellent tourist parks and resorts where you can stay and utilise their first class facilities in a great family atmosphere. Goldfields Holiday Park (p.46) and Novotel Forest Resort, Creswick (p.47) are two to try.
Whilst in town make sure you check out the Eureka Centre where you can walk in the footsteps of Peter Lalor, who lead the only national uprising ever in Australia’s history, “The Eureka Stockade”, a protest launched on Bakery Hill against the price of mining licences in 1854.
Handy HintThe Eureka Centre has an interpretive centre and if you wish to see the original Eureka flag, it is on display at the Ballarat Fine Art Gallery. There is a 3.5km long “Eureka Trail” that is marked with blue bollards and contains recounts of that fateful day on a series of signs. It takes one hour to walk in one direction.

In Creswick there is the Tangled Maze (see opposite) and the Creswick Woollen Mills, with their resident alpacas that offer a good day out and check out the great offer from Novotel Forest Resort (see opposite) particulary if you play golf.

LOOKING FOR A FULL DAY OF FAMILY FUN? Combine your tours and SAVE!
Bendigo – City of mysteryThis Autumn Bendigo will become a city shrouded in mystery and the citizens of
Bendigo are going to need your help to get to the bottom of some startling incidents.
A disturbing turn of events at Bendigo’s much-loved Discovery Science and Technology Centre has shaken the usually calm and serene city folk. A murder has taken place, the police are everywhere and suspicions are running high.Worryingly, this crime just seems to be the tip of the iceberg. As the investigation
progresses and we scratch the surface of Bendigo’s attractive exterior, a sinister
underworld begins to emerge.
It’s going to take a joint effort to restore calm and order to the streets of Bendigo and the authorities are calling on anyone who can
help solve these mysteries to come forward. Are you up for the job?
Visit the city built on dreams -dreams of Striking It Rich!!!!
Impressive Victorian buildings line the wide streets of Bendigo, as a reminder of the rich history built from one of the world’s most exciting gold rushes. More gold was found here between1850 & 1900 than anywhere else in the world. There was very little gold on the surface, most of it was far underground in rich quartz reefs stretching out over 3,600 hectares around thecity. Around nine billion dollars worth of gold was found in Bendigo, making it the second highest producing gold field in Australia after Kalgoorlie, and seventh richest field in the world.

The true highlight of Bendigo is that there is heaps of things to do!
The major attractions are diverse and exciting. There’s the authentic deep-shaft mine experience at Central Deborah, where you travel underground in a miners’ cage into a real mine, the famous Vintage! Talking Tram Tour that weaves through the streets of Bendigo tells wonderful stories of days gone by.
The original 1860’s Chinese Joss House and the Golden Dragon Museum display the Chineseheritage of the area and house the world’s oldest Imperial Dragon, Loong. The Bendigo Art Gallery also has a strong reputation. It is one of Australia’s largest and oldest regional art galleries. The collections of Bendigo Art Gallery include Australian Art from the 1850s to the present day, a special collection of art from the Bendigo goldfields and 19th century European paintings, sculptures and decorative arts.
Worth a look!Do you like a good mystery? Then a visit to Bendigo’s Discovery Science and Technology Centre this Autumn is just what you need. The centre is hosting WHO dunit an exciting hands-on, minds-on exhibition that appeals to the detective in everyone. But the fun doesn’t stop there … afterwards you can participate in a city-wide mystery adventure, which will take you around the city in search of crucial clues. Whether you come by train or car and decide to walk or ride your bike, there will be curious clues for you to uncover all over the city.
WHO dunit is a Scitech exhibition.

Abandoned steamboats and barges, tall red gum wharfs, small towns that show evidence of once having been much larger, old station homesteads that face the river, all these are constant reminders to the river traveller of the days when hundreds of steamers raced along the Murray.
Today you can step back in time and experience the magic of the paddlesteamers era by taking a cruise on one of the fully restored boats. The port area has been restored to its former glory and you can spend a few hours witnessing the now long gone trades of the shipwrights and blacksmiths as they go about their daily tasks. It will give you a great insight into the pioneering days of the area. Whilst there make sure you call into ye olde Sharps
So as you can see, Echuca - Moama’s great range of attractions and activities present a problem… How do you fit them all in?? So come on up - There’s great weather and so much fun for all the family!!!

Did you know Melbourne has over 3,000 restaurants?? No matter where you are there is always something to tempt your tastebuds!
Here are a selection from the many food areas Melbourne has:
Lygon StreetAlso known as Melbourne’s Little Italy! It’s a short tram ride or 10 -15 mins walk along Russell St from the City. Parking is at a premium. It has long been a Melbourne favourite for friendly, Italian style family dining. There are restaurants, takeaways, cafes all doing what Lygon St is famous for - PIZZA, PASTA and GELATI.SouthbankDown by the Yarra in front of the Crown Entertainment Complex is a selection of them “al fresco”. It offers the opportunity to get a great view of “life passing by” as you enjoy your meal. There is also a food court for sit downs or takeaways inside the west end of the Crown complex.DOCKLANDS - HarbourtownThis shopping and dining complex is growing rapidly and now boasts a great selection of restaurants and pubs as well as a food court located near Costco. James Squire Brewhouse has a great selection for kids.Little Bourke Street (CHINATOWN)Located between Exhibition and Swanston Sts, this area is the hub of Chinese activity and dining in Melbourne. There are dozens of restaurants offering all types of Chinese provincial food (with a bit of Aussie flavour). Yum Cha on Sundays sees the area packed with people and is a great experience. Sydney Road BRUNSWICKThe old working class suburb is a short tram or taxi ride from the city and allows you to sample the best Middle Eastern, Greek and Turkish cusine.Restaurants, sweet shops and bakeries areeverywhere and are normally very inexpensive. Victoria St RICHMOND (just under the train bridge) If it is Vietnamese food you are after - You’ve come to the right place. Fresh, noisy, cheap and cheerful is what it’s all about and the food is great! LGK favourtie is Tran Tran (Tram 24 or 109)Parking is very limited.
We are lucky to also have many great pubs that love families and provide great activities and facilities for the kids.
The Zagames hotels (www.zagames.com.au), Castellos (www.castellogroup.com.au) and many of the ALH hotels (www.alhgroup.com.au) have playgrounds, video games, movie nights and entertainment that will keep the kids amused so mum and dad can enjoy themselves too.

Most cities in the world have 1, maybe 2, 3 or 4 professional sporting teams but…Melbourne has 17! It’s no wonder we are known as the sporting capital of the world!!!
If it can be run, be thrown, kicked, caught, hit, go fast, swim, sail or surf, we will support it and turn out to watch it. Melbourne is sports mad and we love to turn up in our thousands to world class venues such as the mighty “G”, Rod Laver Arena, Etihad Stadium and AAMI Park.

Football is all about scoring goals; if you don’t shoot, you don’t score.
Archie Thompson is an expert in scoring goals. Whether he is scoring a 20-yard screamer or
slotting one around the Goalkeeper, he knows how to find the back of the net.
Try this drill to improve your shooting technique.
- Find a wall and draw a big set of goals on it with chalk.- Add in 3 big circles, one in the middle, bottom corner, and top corner.- Your aim is to kick the ball and hit the middle of your circles as many times as possible.- Use the inside of your foot and your laces to try and hit the targets.- First try with the ball stationary, then try with the ball on the move.- Try and hit each target 10 times before you move on to the next.
Strike through the middle/
top of the ball.
Keep your head down and
eyes on the ball.
Use the side of your foot
for accuracy, your laces
for power.
Practice, Practice,
Practice!

77LetsGoKids Melbourne 2013
All around Melbourne and Victoria, you will find many types of family-friendly places in which to stay for all budgets.Whether it’s a night or a week, there are hotels, motels, caravan and tourist parks and holiday home accommodations everywhere. Some hotels and apartments have special activities or deals for kids, while some offer self catering and separate bedroom options.
Our favourites in our highlighted areas are:
Melbourne CBD – Stamford Plaza and The Westin actually like kids! The Medina has apartments and “Kids eat & stay FREE” at the Holiday Inn.
Bellarine Peninsula - The awesome Geelong Riverview Tourist Park (p.78) Organised family activities. Great “beach house” rentals are available from Front Beach Torquay (p.35) Echuca/Moama – Merool (p.56) is a holiday park right on the river at Moama and Moama on Murray – a total family resort. Brand new, kid friendly. Yarraby (p.79) - is close to everything - Echuca and Moama.
Phillip Island – Silverwater Resort (see below) - Just awesome. Anchor Belle (p.29) and Cowes Holiday Park (p.33) are great family destinations right on the beach at Cowes.
Ballarat – Just out of town at Creswick, the Novotel Forest Resort (p.47) is great. Take their bikes for a ride through the forest. Also try Goldfields Holiday Park (p.46) near Sovereign Hill.

Public TransportMetcard – Melbourne’s old public transport ticketing system. Purchasing one card provides flexible travel on trams, trains, and buses. The City has 2 travel zones.
myki – Victoria’s new ticketing system for travel on all public transport. It is a durable plastic card-similar in size to a credit card-which you will be able to use to pay for travel. Your myki can hold both myki money (a dollar amount) and a myki pass (travel days). You can get both types of travel card from the Fed Square Visitor Centre, the MetShop at Melbourne Town Hall (cnr Swanston & Collins Sts), 7Eleven, Coles Express & wherever “Metcard” or Myki signs are displayed.
