LIVING ON CAMPUS:Housing & Dining Services
Academic life is just one part of your experience as a college student. About 66 percent of our undergraduate students live in university housing and call Carnegie Mellon “home.” Living on campus gives students a place to prepare for classes or enjoy a nutritious meal with friends, a place to find peace and privacy and to rest comfortably after a full day.

Applying for Housing
Congratulations on your admission to Carnegie Mellon — we hope you decide to enroll! After enrolling, you’ll receive instructions on how to log in to the “Now That I’m Enrolling” website, which contains important information about accessing the online housing application.
First-year students are required to live on campus and are guaranteed university housing. Housing is also available for all four years at Carnegie Mellon, as long as you remain within the university housing system. On your housing application, you’ll indicate your preferences among a number of options, such as a traditional residence hall room or apartment, double or triple occupancy, single-sex or coed buildings.
First-year students will be assigned to a variety of buildings, including both residence halls and Oakland community apartments.
You should also be sure to visit the Housing Services website at cmu.edu/housing for additional important information.
A Variety of Accommodations
Students have a variety of preferences when it comes to their living arrangements, and Carnegie Mellon offers a wide range of accommodations. Most first-year students (over 95 percent) will have at least one roommate, and the majority will reside in a residence hall room or apartment. As you progress toward your senior year, more options will become available to you. Housing options include:
• first-year only residence halls • single-gender, gender neutral and coed residence halls • apartments, on campus and in the nearby Oakland community • on-campus houses and townhouses • fraternity and sorority housing

Healthy Eating
Fresh, nutritious food is an integral part of the health and wellness of Carnegie Mellon’s campus community. Dining Services makes eating well easy and delicious by creatively preparing meals that emphasize fresh vegetables, seasonal fruits and lean proteins, as well as eateries that serve vegan and vegetarian meals and foods that are free from gluten and the top eight major allergens.
In addition to offering menus with food choices that optimize the health of our diverse community, Dining Services is also committed to integrating food and nutrition education into the student experience through interactive wellness events, farmer’s markets, food demonstrations, cooking classes, lectures and on social media.
Special Dietary Needs
Students with special dietary needs will work with University Health Services to create a meal plan that works for them. Dining’s on-staff registered dietitian is also available to these students to help them understand the many dining options that are available.
If you have any questions or comments about Dining Services, please contact 412.268.2139 or [email protected].
Meal Plans
Meal plans vary based on our students’ dining needs and preferences. Students may use their meal plan at any of our 30+ dining concepts located throughout Carnegie Mellon’s campus. “Meals” or “blocks” include an entrée, side(s) and beverage, and provide students with the flexibility of dining when and where they want. Students may use their “meals” within a two-week period. The number of “meals” associated with the plan is reset every two weeks. Plans vary in “meals” available per period along with an assigned amount of flexible spending dollars. Students should select the meal plan that best reflects their lifestyle and dining habits. Meal plans may be changed through the first four weeks of the fall semester. Please refer to the dining website for details.
Places to Eat
Dining options are available to students throughout campus including in residential and academic buildings. Carnegie Mellon has over 10 dining vendors providing more than 30 dining concepts, including Nourish, Carnegie Mellon’s allergen-friendly kitchen.
Dining Services offers specialty and ethnic cuisines, pizza and burgers, salads and smoothies, breakfast all-day, sushi and traditional fare along with kosher, Halal and vegan and vegetarian options.

What is a Tartan?
Andrew Carnegie, the founder of the Carnegie Technical Schools (the predecessor of Carnegie Mellon), was of Scottish origin, and you’ll see much of that Scottish heritage on campus.
• The official school color is Tartan plaid — created at Andrew Carnegie’s request and manufactured in Scotland — which consists of blue, red, green and yellow. The Tartan is also the name of the university’s weekly and online student newspaper.
• The Scottish Terrier recently emerged as the official Carnegie Mellon mascot and now greets fans and community members at university events.
• Members of our very own Kiltie Marching Band dress in full Scottish regalia for all home football games.
• A Scottish flower, the thistle, appears on the Carnegie Mellon seal. The Thistle is also the name of the school yearbook.
• The Carnegie Mellon Pipe Band, dressed in traditional garb, plays bagpipes at commencement and other formal university occasions. True to our Scottish roots, a major (and minor) in bagpiping is offered.
Painting the Fence
In the early days of Carnegie Tech, there was a ravine that separated the Margaret Morrison Women’s College and the Carnegie Institute of Technology. A bridge that spanned this ravine became a popular meeting place for the women of Margaret Morrison and the men of Carnegie Tech. In 1916, the bridge was taken down when the university filled in the area. The senior class of 1923 put up a wooden fence to be the new meeting place. The night before the administration was going to tear down the fence, a group of fraternity brothers painted it to advertise a party they were having. The party was a huge success, and, ever since, painting the Fence has become a Carnegie Mellon tradition.
Strict tradition dictates that the Fence can only be painted between midnight and sunrise and must be painted in its entirety. Only paintbrushes can be used to paint the Fence. And, if you don’t want your message to be painted over, the Fence must be guarded around the clock by someone in the surrounding gravel area.
The original wooden fence was in the Guinness Book of World Records as the “most painted object in the world.” In 1993, the original wooden fence collapsed under its own weight and was replaced with the concrete fence standing today. It’s estimated that there are four inches of paint on the Fence!

Spring Carnival
Dating back to 1920, Spring Carnival is one of the oldest and most beloved campus traditions. Each April, students enjoy a fun-filled, three-day weekend — there are no classes the Friday of Carnival weekend. Aside from a midway complete with carnival rides, food and entertainment ranging from stand-up comedians to bands, the two main components of Carnival are Booth and Buggy.
Booth: Student organizations build one- or two-story carnival booths with a design and game in accordance with the overall Carnival theme. The booths are displayed on the midway where all Carnival-goers can enjoy them.
Buggy: Student organizations participate in a fierce competition of high-tech soapbox racers. Teams compete in a five-person relay race around Flagstaff Hill in neighboring Schenley Park. The drivers (yes, there are actually people in there!) steer the buggies through the free-roll portion of the race. Buggies can reach speeds of up to 35 miles per hour!
The Cohon University Center is the center of student activity on campus
The Cohon University Center features abundant recreational and social opportunities for everyone. Make a pit stop at the The Marketplace, which offers
various cuisines. Swing by the fitness center for a swim in the aquatics center or a yoga class. Don’t forget to grab a Carnegie Mellon t-shirt, window sticker or mug from the Bookstore.
Diversity
Diversity is one of the defining characteristics of our campus. The Carnegie Mellon undergraduate community is rich with diversity — not just in terms of the majors students can pursue, but also in terms of the backgrounds of our students. There are students from 48 states and more than 65 foreign countries. You’ll meet students from all over the world pursuing all kinds of majors. You might be a drama major from Texas, and your best friend could be an engineering major from Thailand!
At Carnegie Mellon, you’ll learn about different customs, cultures and lifestyles. You’ll meet people whose opinions and beliefs may vary greatly from yours. You’ll be exposed to so many different people with so many different interests and ideas.
At Carnegie Mellon, the education you receive outside of the classroom is every bit as important as the one you receive in it.

Financial AidFinancial aid is an important part of the admission process. Many families compare financial aid offers in order to decide what college to attend. At Carnegie Mellon, aid is awarded solely on the basis of financial need. In order to receive financial aid, you must file the following documents:
• Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
• College Scholarship Service (CSS) PROFILE
• 2016 federal tax returns and W-2 statements submitted via the Institutional Documentation Service (IDOC)
• Complete the attestations on our Where Am I in the Process website, admission.enrollment.cmu.edu/pages/where-am-i-in-the-process
If your parents don’t share the same household, you’ll also need one parent to submit the CSS Non- custodial Parent PROFILE. For financial aid purposes, the ‘custodial parent’ is the parent with whom you’ve lived with most of the time during the past 12 months.
If you submitted all of the required documents by the February 15 deadline, you should receive your financial aid notification within a few days of your decision letter. If you haven’t yet submitted all of your documents, the Office of Admission won’t be able to give you a finalized financial aid package until we’ve received and reviewed all of the required documentation.
