7 EVANGELICAL THEOLOGICAL SOCIETY Y 66 TH ANNUAL MEETING Y ECCLESIOLOGY LETTER FROM THE PROGRAM CHAIR The theme for this year’s conference “Ecclesiology,” reminds us of the primary reason for what we do, whether we are in academic, parachurch or pastoral work—to serve the church. Whether we are equip- ping the next generation of pastors, are pastoring ourselves or are serving on the mission field or with a parachurch/non-profit organization, we are about serving Christ by serving the church. This focus is particularly important for those of us who are professors, lest we get caught up in our academic work and forget that our work ultimately serves the church. Admittedly, our topic for this year is very broad. Our three plenary speakers are ideally suited to speak to us on these matters, and they scarcely need an introduction since they are all well-known and well-published scholars. Dr. Gregg Allison from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Dr. Joe Hellerman from Talbot School of Theology, Biola University, and Dr. Miroslav Volf, from Yale Divinity School, will be addressing the plenary sessions. We will also have a panel discussion on our topic with the three plenary speakers. Our program also includes hundreds of fascinating and learned papers on ecclesiology and other top- ics, and thus we anticipate being both stimulated and edified while we are in San Diego. Special thanks to the executive committee of ETS and the others who reviewed the myriad of paper proposals that were submitted. Thanks for your time and expertise in evaluating the proposals. Thanks also to the program unit committees who did their own evaluation of many paper proposals that were submitted to their respective program units. I regret that we could not accommodate all of the papers proposed. Finally—special gratitude to Mike and Bonnie Thigpen and their excellent team who have done out- standing work in putting the program together. As our society has grown, stitching together the de- tails of the annual meeting and keeping the society running has become increasingly complex. Mike and Bonnie keep the wheels turning both at our meeting and year-round, and thus they deserve our kudos for their exceptional work year after year. The administrative side of ETS is in very good hands. I look forward to seeing you in San Diego and trust that our meetings will be a rich and fruitful time for us all! Scott B. LETTER FROM THE PROGRAM CHAIR

The theme for this year’s conference “Ecclesiology,” reminds us of the primary reason for what we do, whether we are in academic, parachurch or pastoral work—to serve the church. Whether we are equip-ping the next generation of pastors, are pastoring ourselves or are serving on the mission field or with a parachurch/non-profit organization, we are about serving Christ by serving the church.

Our program also includes hundreds of fascinating and learned papers on ecclesiology and other top-ics, and thus we anticipate being both stimulated and edified while we are in San Diego.

Finally—special gratitude to Mike and Bonnie Thigpen and their excellent team who have done out-standing work in putting the program together. As our society has grown, stitching together the de-tails of the annual meeting and keeping the society running has become increasingly complex.

E VANGELIC AL THEOLOGIC AL SOCIET Y Y 6 6TH ANNUAL MEETING Y ECCLESIOLOGY

CONFERENCE OVERVIEW

PARALLEL SESSIONSThe parallel sessions are composed of five differ-ent session types.

A Affiliated Society sessions feature presen-tations that were selected and arranged by one of the three societies which join ETS each year: the Adventist Theological Society, the Evangelical Philosophical Society, and the Near Eastern Archaeological Society.

D Discipline specific sessions are composed of presentations that were submitted by ETS members and rated by a panel of scholars who served under the direction of the program chair. These presentations have been grouped into ba-sic disciplines: Old Testament, New Testament, Systematic Theology, and Church History/Historical Theology.

P Program Unit sessions are a combination of invited papers and proposed presentations which were selected by the program unit steer-ing committees. ETS has three types of program units. Consultations are new program units which are responsible for 1 session of invited papers at

the meeting. Study Groups are narrowly focused groups which require active, collaborative partic-ipation by the group members. ETS encourages study groups to publish the results of their work. Study groups are responsible for one session of invited papers at the annual meeting. Sections are broadly defined groups that represent general areas of interest. Responsible for one session of invited papers and one session of papers drawn from member submissions, the sections offer the most access for unsolicited papers

T Theme sessions are composed of presenta-tions submitted by members, which address the topic of Ecclesiology. These presentations were evaluated by a panel of scholars under the direc-tion of the program chair. The theme presenta-tions have been arranged into cohesive sessions based on texts, topics, and methods.

C Career sessions are special sessions that are designed to help ETS members in their careers. These sessions include discussions of the aca-demic job market, publishing, interviewing and other significant career development topics.
