Agriculture R&D ClientBiotech Research Campus DevelopmentBSA LifeStructures worked with this research and development client to create a master plan for its world headquarters campus that serves as a roadmap for growth and expansion. The process included an assessment of architectural, engineering and site aspects of all existing facilities on campus. One common theme throughout the plan is the continuance of current sustainable design initiatives.

Project ChallengesThe planning process included:• Evaluation of the buildable zones on the

current site and recommendations for growth to accommodate at a minimum 600,000 GSF of new building space and associated parking.

• Evaluation of the likely areas of growth on the campus.

• Examination of the existing site, utilities and infrastructure of the campus.

• Examination of the existing mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems in the building to determine their impact on future growth potential; and as such, whether a central plant concept might better serve the campus as it expands.

Assessment ResultsThe campus analysis identified 1.166 million gross square feet of existing building area.

Under the master plan, the campus is able to support an additional 1.07 million gross square feet of building space; for a new total just over 2.236 million gross square feet. This allows for more than double the current number of staff on campus over the next 8 years and additional growth beyond that.

Master Plan ImplementationBSA LifeStructures has worked with the client to implement the master plan, which has so far included construction of a new 200,000-square-foot R&D facility and expansion of greenhouses.

Academic Space Programming

The Continuum of Campus Planning

Space programming forms the foundation of the design effort. More than numbers or spreadsheets- it is a reflection of the goals for the project.http://www.bsalifestructures.com/blog/campus-planning-and-design/academic-space-programming-v1

The BSA LifeStructures academic planning process includes three distinct phases. The combination of these three phases creates a comprehensive planning process that helps the design team learn and understand the university, so they can create spaces that take full advantage of their curriculum, location and culture.http://www.bsalifestructures.com/blog/campus-planning-and-design/the-continuum-of-campus-planning

Architects and engineers from Groth Desigin Group and BSA LifeStructures offer insights on planning and design topics through blogs. A sample of writings are displayed here with direct interactive links to the full articles.

Removing the Silos in Learning EnvironmentsInterprofessional learning environments stress the value of collaboration between different departments and programs. To create spaces that intentionally encourage collaboration, it is important to understand how users interact.http://www.bsalifestructures.com/blog/designing-learning-environments-2/removing-the-silos-in-learning-environments

Controlling the Worth of DecisionsThe first order of business in planning a project is to establish with your design team what is important to you in maintaining control of project development and the final outcome. There are three key factors that you, as the owner, should define before allowing your architect to begin:key Factor #1 – Set Your Prioritieshttp://gdg-architects.com/ThoughtHub/set-your-priorities/

key Factor #2 – Define Your Meaning of Valuehttp://gdg-architects.com/ThoughtHub/define-your-meaning-of-value/

key Factor #3 – Determine Your Criteria for Making Decisionshttp://gdg-architects.com/ThoughtHub/criteria-for-making-decisions/
