  • October 8, 2014 The Honorable Frank Whitney Chief U.S. District Judge Charles R. Jonas Federal Building 401 West Trade Street Charlotte, North Carolina 28202 To The Honorable Frank Whitney:

It is with the most absolute sincerity that I can convey in this medium that I ask you to consider the

following when you make your sentencing judgment on behalf of Patrick Cannon.

I have known Patrick since 1999. At that time, I was responsible for the planning, execution and

sponsorship acquisition of the Legacy Basketball Classic. Patrick was committed to ensuring that this

weekend long event had the full support of the City of Charlotte. His love for his city and the opportunity

the Legacy Basketball Classic brought allowed Charlotte to be seen as a premier destination city. Every

planning meeting and/or conference call held Patrick was there. As a result, I came to know him as a

dependable tried and true leader. This sentiment would prove true over and over as I had other

opportunities to work with Patrick. As the Chairperson of the City of Charlotte MLK Holiday Planning

Committee, I again had the chance to work with and witness Patricks genuine love for this great city.

Patrick attended both the National Celebration and the McCrorey YMCA Prayer Breakfast events back to

back ensuring that he was on hand to deliver the Citywide Proclamation of the National MLK Holiday

    versus just sending a representative.

Not only have I witnessed Patrick show that he is committed, dependable leader, I have also observed

these same characteristic in him as the leader of his household. Patrick is a proud father. Our meetings

never concluded without updates on Brittney and Patrick. It is the relationship he has with his children

that I find the most troubling aspect of this situation. Extended time away from their father I know will

cause great pain for both Brittney and Patrick.

I will be transparent and say, how Patrick ever got into this situation is hard for me to understand, as

this is not the person I know. If for nothing else but for the sake of Patricks young children, I am asking

that you offer a judgment that will allow him to 1) be reunited with his family as quickly as possible and

    2) remain within close proximity of Charlotte, NC so the family can easily stay connected.

    Thank you for your consideration.

    Sincerely,

Cherise Belnavis Johnson Immediate Past Chair City of Charlotte MLK Holiday Planning Committee

    Robert H Szymkiewicz

    Charlotte, NC

The Honorable Frank Whitney Chief U.S. District Judge Charles R. Jonas Federal Building 401 W. Trade St Charlotte, NC 28202

    Dear Judge Whitney:

I am writing to ask you to show leniency when sentencing Patrick Cannon.

I first met Pat soon after my wife and I moved to First Ward in 1998. First Ward, the former Earle Village, is a Hope VI neighborhood located in Uptown Charlotte. We have one-hundred-thirty-one units of public housing. I, along with some friends, started a non-profit corporation to help families living in those units. I am often looking for role models to meet with the young men in the neighborhood. Pat was always willing to help out and he always seemed to make time when askedand I asked often.

For the past ten years I have mentored a young man named Brandon from the neighborhood. He has met Pat Cannon and was impressed with how this important man made time for him and me. After Pats arrest Brandon and I spoke at length. Where I normally used Pat as a good example I was now using him as a bad one. It was a good lesson on patience, greed and temptation. Also, I was able to explain that Pat understands his error and accepts responsibility and was ready to pay for his crimes.

I have always known Pat Cannon to be a man of honor and I know he accepts responsibility for his actions. I ask that you show him leniency. I have no doubt that when he pays his debt through the legal system he will try to make amends to the City that he loves. Thank you.

    Sincerely,

    Robert H. Szymkiewicz
