Level 2 CourseEFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) is a member of a class ofprotocols and treatment techniques referred to as Energy Therapy. These techniques are being used by therapists, nurses, physicians, psychiatrists and lay people worldwide. To date, EFT and otherEnergy Therapy Techniques have yielded exceptional results in the

treatment of psychological and physical problems. They are not meant to replace appropriate medical treatment ormental health therapy. Very few adverse side effects areexperienced when applying these techniques, assuming that thecorrect protocols and procedures are followed. This does not mean, however, that no one will experience or perceive negative sideeffects. If you use these techniques on yourself or others, you must

agree to take full responsibility for your own well-being and you areadvised to encourage your clients to do the same.

This section covers advanced material for Level 2. It will enable youto apply EFT to more complex emotional and physical ailments andprovide you creative and innovative tools in the application of EFT for yourself and in working with others.

The words on our walls are metaphors for our self talk, of course. They represent the attitudes, opinions & beliefs that we haveaccumulated over the years. Many of them are hand-me-downs from

our parents, grandparents, teachers, coaches, religion, peers, books,TV and an endless list of other "authorities" in our lives. Uponinspection many of them are laughable. Nonetheless, they still seemto have a hold on our progress.

We all have different words on our walls. That's why we appear tohave different limits. Your limits are different from mine becausethe "truths" written on your walls are different from the "truths"

written on mine. However, they are not really "truths" at all. Theyare just the guidelines we have adopted for getting through life--AND--many of them are fictions. They are hand-me-down beliefsthat were written on our walls by others and we have been dutifullyobeying them ever since. This need not be.

This brings us to a foundational concept upon which The Palace ofPossibilities is built. It is of critical importance and underlies just

about every idea we are going to explore in this series. It should betattooed on the insides of our eyelids so that we see it every timewe blink. Its truth is undeniable, yet it is so subtle that we tend toignore it. Here it is:

"We constantly consult the writing on our walls."

That writing is our most prominent advisor and we consult it all daylong. It represents every experience we have ever had. It containsall of our "how tos". It contains our cans & cants as well as ourshoulds & should nots. It contains our musts & must nots as well asour sense of fair play. It contains our version of proper behaviour aswell as what is right or wrong in this world. It contains our

judgements, our successes and our failures. It's all there --everything we hold to be true -- written on our walls.

For example, we eat soup with a spoon instead of a fork because ourknowledge base (the writing on our walls) advises us to do so. This issubtle, but it's as if we ask the question, "How do I eat this soup?"

and the writing on our walls says, "Use a spoon." This is why we wear jeans on some occasions and black tie or evening gowns on others. Weconstantly consult the writing on our walls for what to do. Thosewords represent the "truth" as we have learned it.

We consult those walls for just about everything. Those words tellus about our opportunities as well as our limits. Often they conflictwith each other. On the subject of finances, for example, they maytell us, "This is America, the land of opportunity -- go for it." Butthey may also tell us....

"You are too young (or too old) for that." "You don't have enough education." "You are a woman and are limited by the glass ceiling." "You are a minority." "People who take risks end up broke." "Getting ahead depends on who you know." "Rich people are dishonest."

This fictional list of limits goes on indefinitely, of course. Are any ofthem written on your walls? If you believe any of them -- or if any ofthem rings true you have bought into a "limit" that need not be there.

There is nothing inherently good or bad about money. It is a form ofenergy. It can be used to finance wars and destruction OR it can beused to ease love into the hard to reach corners of the world. Wecan build our own barriers to it or let it flow through us as a sign ofour birthright to abundance. All of this is dictated by the cans andcan'ts written on our financial walls.

Eventually EFT will be used uniformly in business, sports, academics, spirituality and human achievements of all kinds. This is inevitable.Accordingly, healers need to expand their visions. They must moveoutside the walls of their previous rooms in the Palace ofPossibilities and dwell in rooms that allow their own emotionalfreedom to expand with that of their clients. The proficient healermust engage clients and take them from the dungeon to the PalacePenthouse and beyond. The healer must lead the way by example.

What better way to teach abundance, joy and emotional freedomthan to develop new levels of it for ourselves first.

This whole series can be reduced to one sentence....

"My consistent thoughts become my reality."

It all boils down to that. This is not new, of course. It is perhaps themost fundamental rule in all of psychotherapy.

(Gender is used in the following quotes)

From the Bible: "As a man thinketh, in his heart so is he."

From Ralph Waldo Emerson: "As a man thinketh, so he becomes."

From A Course In Miracles: "The world you see is what you gaveit, nothing more than that. But though it is no more than that,it is not less. Therefore, to you it is important. It is the

witness to your state of mind, the outside picture of an inwardcondition. As a one thinketh, so does one perceive."

Although we don't often hear it stated this way, the main goal ofpsychotherapy has always been to have clients change theirconsistent thoughts so that the quality of their lives (their reality)will shift for the better. The primary goal has been to get clients tothink differently about their traumas, fears, guilt, grief, etc. inhopes that they will put these things "in perspective" and go abouttheir lives more positively. Their consistent thoughts, once changed, become their new reality.

Many clients are unaware of The Palace of Possibilities in which they

live because they dwell in their own personal dungeons amidst theirthoughts of past abuses, war memories, fear, guilt and the like. Their

consistent thoughts have become their reality and, when they walkinto your office, they bring their dungeons with them. The writing ontheir walls provides graphic evidence of their personal guilt, shame,

etc. And IT IS WRITTEN THERE IN CAPITAL LETTERS,SHOUTING AT THEM. There is other writing, of course -- evensome writing of a more positive nature. However, it is overwhelmedby those capital letters. Those capital letters become the focus oftheir thinking--the centre piece of their existence. They havebecome lifetime "limits" and will continue to do so until that writingis erased and replaced.

"Yesterday's thoughts have created your present. Today's thoughts are creating your future."

This is yet another way to say, "my consistent thoughts become my reality." So is, "A happy face does not come by chance, it comes by happy thoughts." The idea is everywhere. Think what you havealways thought and you will get what you have always gotten.

We would, of course, all like to have a better reality. We wouldprefer to have more emotional freedom--to be more spirituallyevolved--to live in the more expansive annexes of our personal Palaceof Possibilities. It follows then, that the way to achieve a betterreality is to change our consistent thoughts because changing ourconsistent thoughts automatically changes our reality.

This is a cognitive sort of approach and, as such, some of it is old

(but powerful) stuff. What takes us to new levels here is thecombination of these tools with EFT and the energy approaches. Thetapping technologies clear away (erase) the heavy emotional stufffar more efficiently than do the cognitive approaches. This relief, together with the creative use of cognitive type tools, allows us tomore easily rewrite (replace) the words on our walls. Once we erasethe limiting words from our walls, we can replace them with whateverwe want. Erase and replace. Erase and replace. Our aim here is to

    approach limitlessness.

AffirmationsAffirmations are among the most powerful tools we can use for

personal transformation. They are highly reliable, easy to use and are based on impeccable logic."

Affirmations are usually front and centre in the vast array of "youare what you think" books and carry with them some hard to arguewith logic. Simply stated, the persistent repetition of an affirmationconditions the mind to see things differently. The affirmationeventually becomes installed as a consistent thought which thenshows up in our reality. Our consistent thoughts become our reality.Affirmations are the real sleepers in our Personal PerformanceToolkit and we are about to wake them up.

To some people affirmations are considered useless. To many theyrepresent a good idea that, unfortunately, doesn't deliver on itspromises. Many people have tried them but quit because "They don't work!" In truth, however, they do work and work superbly. They arehighly reliable (perhaps more reliable than any other tool) and do,indeed, manifest in people's lives that which is affirmed.

Affirmations seem to be ineffective only because there is a missingpiece to the affirmation process that has gone mostly unrecognized. It has to do with what is actually affirmed. This is often NOT the

affirmation that is stated. In fact, it is frequently the opposite. Ouraffirmations are impressive in their ability to shape our lives. If wewill but listen to our own self talk we will hear glowing evidence ofthis. Our self talk contains constant affirmations regarding ourexisting beliefs and attitudes. So does our every day conversation. These affirmations have brought us to the current status in our livesand confined us within our own limiting rooms in The Palace ofPossibilities. To truly harness the power of affirmations, we must

make sure the actual affirmations that are taking effect are theones we want. Therein lies our major challenge and an indispensableuse for EFT.

An example is; a 200 pound woman uses an affirmation aimed atweighing 130. She might affirm something like this...

"My normal weight is 130 pounds and that's what I weigh."

The logic here is that if she keeps repeating that affirmation shewill perform a form of mental conditioning. As a result, she will beginto see herself differently and will naturally adjust her food intakeand exercise habits to permanently achieve this new weight level.Properly done, there would be no will power involved. Her life habitswould simply evolve to someone who behaved as a 130 pound woman.

But most people don't have this experience. Because the affirmationthey are stating is not the "true" affirmation. The statedaffirmation often has competition within the person's system. Thatcompeting affirmation gets tagged on at the tail end of the statedaffirmation in a subtle, yet powerful, way and becomes the "true"affirmation.

For example, our 200 pound woman who says, "My normal weight is

130 pounds and that's what I weigh" is likely to have one or more

    10/43

    10

"tail enders" show up at the end of her affirmation. They might golike this...

"But if you lose the weight, others will expect you to keep it off."

"But if you lose the weight, you will have to spend a lot of

    money for new clothes."

"But if you lose the weight, men will hit on you and expect sex."

"But if you lose the weight, men won't hit on you and then you

    will know you aren't loveable.

"But if you lose the weight, you will have to give up your

    favourite foods."

This list of tail-enders is endless. These are just examples. They arenot spoken or articulated, of course, but are subtle (and powerful)reflections of the existing obstacles for losing weight. Can they be

eventually overridden by the persistent use of the affirmation?Probably. However, it's a rare person who will keep up thispersistence. Why? Because first, they are not seeing any immediateresults and, second, they feel uncomfortable with the emotionaldiscord that goes on between the stated affirmation and thecompeting tail-enders. They often conclude that they are lying tothemselves and just give up. As you can see, the affirmation processusually needs help. It needs EFT to erase those existing tail-enders.

    11/43

    11

This brings us to one of the truly powerful aspects of affirmations, namely, that once an affirmation is truly installed, it is not easilymoved. It becomes a permanent part of your persona until you

replace it. For example, those tail end affirmations for our 200pound woman have taken up residence within her system. They areentrenched. They are written on her walls and have become herconsistent thoughts which, of course, have become her reality. Theyare stubborn and are not about to be easily "talked away" with anunaided new affirmation. She sees herself as a 200 pound woman--and that's it! Her weight is a reflection of her existing affirmations--the writing on her walls. The good news here is that once the new

"130 pound affirmation" truly takes place, it becomes the newconsistent thought and is just as obstinate as the previous "200pound tail-enders" which it replaced. To gain weight back would beinconsistent with the newly resident consistent thoughts.

If we listen to ourselves talk, we will hear our "limits" and otherforms of affirmations come rolling out of our faces. Things like...

    "I can't sing," "Making money isn't spiritual,"

    "Women can't compete in a man's world,"

"I never seem to find the right words," etc. etc. etc.

...serve as affirmations that keep us right where we are.

Affirmations are powerful, very powerful. We are using them everyminute of the day. They shape our lives because they reflect ourbeliefs and our attitudes. You are using them right now as you readthis. You are consulting the writing on your walls (your existingaffirmations) to agree or disagree with what I am saying. Have youfound yourself saying, "Yes, but..." while reading this? If so, you areaffirming something, probably a limit.

    12

This is why it was stated earlier that affirmations....

"...are highly reliable (perhaps more reliable than any other tool) and do, indeed, manifest in people's lives that which is affirmed."

There is no question that properly installed affirmations work verypowerfully. The only trick here is to make sure that the affirmationthat you really want is the true affirmation.

This is where EFT comes in. It serves as a highly effective eraserfor all the negative emotions & beliefs that serve as competing tail-enders. With the skilful use of EFT, each and every block to personal

performance can be eliminated, thereby providing a clean wall onwhich to write our new consistent thoughts. Erase and replace. Eraseand replace. Once the competition is gone, the affirmation will haveclear sailing. This is exciting. It is transformational. This combinationof EFT and affirmations allows us to completely re-engineer oursystems. It allows us to erase our blocks and install our dreams.Finances can flourish. Friendships can flower. And personal peace canproliferate.

    13

Up until now EFT has been a stand-alone eraser without any means toinstall dreams. Affirmations, on the other hand, have been a stand-alone tool for installing dreams but without an eraser for the

competing tail-enders. Now we can blend both tools together andtake ourselves & our clients into the more glorious rooms of thePalace of Possibilities. People who pursue their possibilities, peoplewith dreams make things happen. They lead by example.

    Try it On Everything

Some of our beliefs need help, especially if we are to trulyunderstand and effectively use the wide reaching versatility of EFT.

We have been conditioned to believe that each of our ailmentsrequires a specific remedy. Thus we take aspirin for headaches andantihistamines for allergies. We also see specialists such aspodiatrists, psychiatrists, urologists and gynaecologists. Further, in

emotional healing we consider fear, guilt, grief and trauma to beseparate problems requiring separate techniques. The list goes on.

  • 8/14/2019 Level 2 Course

    14/43

    14

These aren't "bad beliefs," by the way. To the contrary, some ofthese specific remedies have been quite useful in our quest to obtainhealing relief. However, with the emergence of EFT, our belief

systems now have a new challenge, namely, that there has never beforebeen such a " one-approach-addresses-everything-technique ."

To most, it is a completely foreign idea to use the same technique fora headache that you use for a height phobia. Yet, that is precisely whatwe do with EFT. And we usually get results. TRY IT ON EVERYTHING.

We use the same approach for trauma of every description. We useit for the fear of public speaking and for grief over the loss of aloved one. We use it for stress, anxiety, addictive cravings, stuttering and depression. We've had success with almost everyphysical ailment including pain, lactose intolerance, allergies, andeverything from serious diseases to TMJ to infertility to PMS. Weuse it to enhance sports & music performance as well as relationships. We use it to give educational freedom to those with learningdisabilities as well as to relieve nightmares and Post Traumatic

Stress Disorder for victims of rape, accidents, abuse and war. And, again, the list goes on. Unfortunately, many people use EFT torelieve just one ailment and completely miss its use for all the others. This course urges an opening of the mind in this regard. Why limitEFT to 1% of its capabilities?

There is, of course, an "art of delivery" that separates the novice

EFT'er from the master. However, even the novice can apply thebasics and achieve high percentage results. Mastery, fortunately, isa choice and is achievable by anyone. You need only pursue it.

    The Importance of Being Specific

This section addresses one of the most common errors made bynewcomers to EFT. Once this is corrected, your results will havemuch greater consistency and many of your "difficult cases" will meltaway quite easily.

The problem is that most clients tend to see their issues through"global glasses." That is, they describe their issues using broadlabels which, to them, seem very specific. Examples might be...

"I just don't feel very good about myself."

    "My father always abused me."

"My mother never gave me the love I should have had."

"I don't do very well with relationships."

    "I'm easily rejected."

Each of these, and countless more like them, are like emotionalforests made up of specific trees (negative events) which contributeto the overall problem. Using EFT on the globally stated problem islike trying to chop down an entire forest with one swing of the axe.If you address the global problem in this way, you will probably makesome progress each time you swing. However, compared to theenormity of the forest, the progress is not likely to be noticed andthus the client will probably claim "no result" or you mighterroneously consider them hopelessly Psychologically Reversed or youmight erroneously conclude that they are beset with energy toxinsor you might give up and think EFT "doesn't work".

Instead of using EFT on an issue like, "Even though I'm easily rejected....." it is best to break down the globally stated problem intospecific events such as....

  • 8/14/2019 Level 2 Course

    16/43

    16

"Even though my 3rd grade teacher embarrassed me in front of the class....."

"Even though I felt so left out when my father didn't attend my high school graduation...."

"Even though my high school sweetheart said, 'I've grown tired of you'...."

"Even though I was sent to my room for the whole day on Thanksgiving at age 8...."

"Even though Mom told me 'you'll never get married unless you are thin like your sister'...."

These are the TRUE CONTRIBUTORS to the "I'm easily rejected" issue. They represent the FOUNDATION of the problem. Thefeeling of rejection is but the symptom of these underlying specificcauses. Stated differently, if we didn't have these specific causes, how could we possibly feel rejection? The answer is 'we couldn't'because there would be no prior experience by which to measure acurrent "rejection."

So....we need to neutralize these causes by using EFT on individualtrees. When we do, several benefits occur....

    1. The client can easily recognize whenever EFT has eliminated anegative tree from their forest. They may start with an intensity of7-10 for a given event and end with an intensity of 0. This is clearlynoticeable and thus substantially improves the client's (and your)confidence in the method.

    2. Each tree that is removed thins out the forest. This allows theclient to walk through the forest with more ease instead ofconsistently bumping into yet another "rejection tree." The sting ofrejection becomes less and less.

  • 8/14/2019 Level 2 Course

    17/43

    17

    3. An important GENERALIZATION EFFECT occurs. The various"rejection trees" tend to have some common themes among them sothat removing one tree has an effect on the remaining ones. Often,

we can remove 5 or10 trees and then watch the whole forest fall.We cannot overemphasize the importance of being specific. It oftenspells the difference between dramatic success and apparent failure.

    Aspects

On many occasions, you need only apply one or two rounds of EFT to a

specific event in order for its emotional intensity to vanish forever. These are our "one minute wonders" and, fortunately, they occurwith delightful frequency. Many lives have been instantly shifted inpositive directions because of this feature.

Sometimes, however, even after you have made professional effortsto tap on specific events, the client still reports the problem as "nobetter." Why would this be? Why does the process work so easily in

most cases but appear to bog down in others? There are a few

  • 8/14/2019 Level 2 Course

    18/43

    18

possibilities here (the others will be covered later) but one of themost common causes is that the client, without realizing it, is"shifting to different aspects."

Some issues, it turns out, have many pieces--or aspects--to them. These are actually separate issues. However, clients don't usuallymake this distinction unless you point it out to them. Suppose, forexample, a client wants help with their frightful memories regardingan automobile accident. You can apply EFT, of course, to "thisaccident" and you are likely to make good progress. If you don't,however, you can ask for more specifics (aspects) with a question

like..."What about the accident bothers you the most?"

Let's suppose the client says, "Oh, the headlights, the headlights, I can still see them coming at me! " You can then tap on "the headlights" or "my fear of the headlights" or any other verbiagethat seems to fit. After the client's reaction to the headlights hasbeen reduced to zero, you can then ask...

"What else about the accident bothers you?"

At this point the client may bring up other aspects such as, "The screams in the car" or "My anger at the other driver" or "My anger at the doctors," etc. The list can be quite long. Usually, though, itcontains only one or two aspects. Tap on these other aspects untilthe client can no longer find anything bothersome about the accident.

As a test, ask them to "run the movie" of the accident in their mindin vivid detail. This will bring up any trailing aspects for tapping.Eventually, the client should have no charge on the accident. It will

just be an unfortunate event in their life--and that's all.

One mistake that is often made along the way, however, is to tap on"the headlights" and then ask a much too global question such as,"How do you feel about the accident now?" That question doesn't ask

  • 8/14/2019 Level 2 Course

    19/43

    19

for any new aspects. It just asks for an overall feeling. In fact, ifthere are any other aspects (such as "the screams in the car" ) theclient will report "no progress" because they still have intensity.

Remember, the client doesn't distinguish between the aspects. Tothem, it's all one big problem. You have to make the distinction byfirst recognizing that aspects exist (that's just simply experience)and, second, asking the right questions to bring them to the surface.

Aspects can happen with almost any emotional issue -- examplesmight be....

A war trauma can have aspects such as the sight of blood, thelook in a comrade's eyes before they die, the sound of a handgrenade, etc.

A rape experience can have aspects such as the smell of theassailant's breath, the impact of a fist, the penetration, etc.

A fear of public speaking can have aspects such as the sight ofa microphone, the onlooking eyes of the audience, a memory ofbeing ridiculed as a child, etc.

Another thing to recognize is that an aspect can also be an emotion. Thus, some clients report that the anger they had regarding a givenevent has shifted to sadness. Pick up on these clues. These differentemotional aspects are taking you deeper into the problem. They areopportunities for greater healing and present you with greatpossibilities for mastering your craft.

The DVD sets are loaded with live examples of aspects which you canreplay over and over again. I don't think you will find betterexamples anywhere of how to address this important subject. Payparticular attention to Dave and his fear of water. This hour long, very thorough session, is a classic example of aspects and how to

    address them.

"Even though I'm nervous about telling the story....."

"Even though I'm afraid what might happen when I tell this story...."

"Even though I don't like this whole thing....." "Even though just starting the story gives me the jitters...."

    2. When the client feels comfortable about starting the story(perhaps an intensity level of 0-3), ask them to begin at a time whenthere is nothing to be concerned about. An example might be havinglunch with a friend just before having a car accident. This tends to

ease the client into the experience.3. Instruct the client to STOP THE MOMENT THEY FEEL ANYINTENSITY WHATSOEVER. This is critical to the success of thisprocedure. Most clients are conditioned by conventional techniquesto "be courageous" and to "feel the feelings" and to "be brave andgut through it." Thus, they are likely to go right by an importanttapping point without telling you. The CLIENT NEEDS TO

UNDERSTAND THAT IF THEY DON'T STOP, THEY HAVE MISSEDA HEALING OPPORTUNITY. Hit this one hard. Emphasize it. Raise your voice a bit to punctuate it. Insist on it. Remind them that we arelooking for minimal pain here and that they get no points for bravery.

    4. Have the client repeat the story while doing EFT until they cantell it nonchalantly--like it was a shopping trip.

    5. Then ask the client to close their eyes and VIVIDLY IMAGINEthe whole event and ask them to TRY TO GET THEMSELVES UPSET by exaggerating the sights, sounds and feelings. Chances are theywill get through it fine but, if they don't, then you will haveuncovered an important aspect or underlying cause. Use EFT forwhatever comes up until they cannot get upset about the issue byeither imagining it or talking about it.

    6. The ultimate test, of course, will be to physically visit theoffending scene/person again and see if anything else arises. Ifthere are any remnants left, they will show up during the "real deal."

The "Tell the Story Technique" has several benefits:

    1. It is easy to perform and, because the client talks a lot during theprocess, it often parallels what clients consider "real therapy." Thusthe perception of EFT's "weirdness" is minimized.

    2. The "story" provides a built in procedure for finding aspects.

    3. It can be used either as a primary technique or as a way to test your results.

    4. It allows the issue to unfold as gently as possible.

    5. The client gives you solid information along the way that allows youto know how you are progressing.

The Movie Technique: A Tool for BeingSpecific

In the earlier section it was emphasized how import it is to addressspecific events rather than global issues. This can often spell the

difference between apparent failure and dramatic success. Eventhough the concept is easy to understand, some newcomers havedifficulty putting it into practice.

Fortunately, there is a tool that greatly simplifies this importanttask. Simply stated, if the client can make a mental movie of theevent then it is automatically a specific event. A movie has a specificbeginning and a specific end in time. It has a specific plot and

specific characters. It has specific words and specific actions andgenerates specific feelings. In fact, if the client can't make aspecific movie of their problem then the problem is too globally stated.

Here's an example. Suppose the client states their problem as, "My father always abused me." This is too global, of course, because thatabuse is likely comprised of numerous specific instances (events) ofabuse. If you ask the client to make a specific movie of this abuse,YOU FORCE THEM IN THE DIRECTION OF A SPECIFIC EVENT.

  • 8/14/2019 Level 2 Course

    24/43

    24

Once in awhile the client will make a vague generalization of the issueinstead of a specific movie. In such cases, you will need to guidethem in the proper direction.

To give you some guidelines for stepping through this MovieTechnique, the following procedures are useful:

First, ask the client, "If it was a movie, how long would it last?" Typically, they give me an answer that can be measured inminutes. This reflects, of course, a specific event. If they say,

"several hours" or "several days," then you can usually assumethey are still being too global.

Next, ask the client, "What would the title be?" This also tendsto force specificity. In most cases, they will give you a specifictitle such as, "Fight in the Kitchen" or "My accident in Mom's car." If they give you a more general title, be sure to check outhow specific they are being.

Next, ask them to run the movie in their mind and evaluate theintensity they are having NOW (as they imagine it) on a scaleof 0-10. Alternatively, you can ask them to GUESS what theirintensity would be IF they vividly imagined it. I usually findtheir guesses to be reasonably accurate AND guessing tends tosave the clients some emotional pain.

Next, do several rounds of EFT on "this ____________movie." At the end of each round check out the 0-10 intensity.Typically, it will come down to low numbers or to zero. You may bedone with this specific movie at this stage but continue with the

procedures below to thoroughly test the completeness of your work.

  • 8/14/2019 Level 2 Course

    25/43

    25

Next, ask them to go through the movie in their mind, startingwith a low-intensity segment, BUT STOP WHENEVER THEYFEEL ANY INTENSITY. You will usually need to emphasize the

importance of stopping because most clients are conditioned tobelieve that, in order to be rid of their problem, they must bebrave and feel the pain while going through it. This is nowancient thinking. With EFT, these stopping points provideopportunities for tapping.

Next, use EFT on each stopping point until there is no more

intensity on that segment (aspect) of the movie.

Have them run through the movie in their mind again, beginningto end, tapping on intense aspects as they come up, until themovie no longer has a charge on it.

Finally, when the intensity seems to be resolved, ask the clientto go through the movie one last time, but exaggerate thesights, sounds, colours, etc and really TRY to get upset about it.If they find some more intensity, then keep repeating thesteps above until it is gone. When they can no longer get upset,

    your work is done.

Properly done, this procedure should neatly remove a negative treefrom the client's emotional forest. Then you can remove anothertree...and then another...and then another...until 5 or 10 of them havebeen thoroughly uprooted. Since most of these trees have somecommonality among them, there is usually a "generalization effect"that spreads throughout the whole forest, thereby toppling the restof the trees. Thus, the client's problem of "My father always abused me," even though it may have several hundred specific events (trees)

contributing to it, is often handled after 5 or 10 specific events havebeen neutralized.

The Movie Technique is similar to the Tell the Story Technique, andthey are both fantastic tools for being specific and thorough in yourwork. The Movie Technique has the added advantage of helping you

address events that the client cant or would prefer not to discussout loud. On the other hand, the Tell the Story Technique willpresent opportunities for you to ask specific questions to help yourclient get to the less obvious aspects. As you refine your skills, youmay develop a preference for one or the other, or you may choose tocombine elements of each, depending on the individual session.

    The Tearless Trauma Technique

Since first introducing this technique to the public, it has been usedwith great success by many. However, the term "Tearless" does notmean that no one ever has tears or discomfort. Indeed, some peoplerespond with tears or other forms of distress at the mere mention oftheir issue. Thus, please interpret The Tearless Trauma Technique asa method where distress can usually be minimized or eliminated.

    27/43

    27

The Tearless Trauma Technique was developed in a group settingwith impressive results, and although it continues to be effective forgroups, it is presented here as another alternative for minimizing

pain in individual sessions. Here are the steps:1. Ask the client to identify a specific traumatic incident from theirpast. Ask that it be at least 3 years ago to minimize anycomplications from the dynamics of a current event. An examplemight be, "the time my father punched me when I was 12." Bycontrast, the phrase "my father abused me" would be too broadbecause, chances are, the abuse took place over many, many incidents.

Please note that you may need to instruct the client to stay on theiroriginal issue because many of them will shift to other issues as theyresolve the original one.

    2. Ask the client to GUESS at what their emotional intensity wouldbe (on a 0-10 scale) IF they were to vividly imagine the incident, andmake note of their guess. Instruct them NOT to actually imagine it(although some will close their eyes and do this anyway). This

GUESS is a surprisingly useful estimate and it serves to minimizeemotional pain.

    3. Have the client develop a phrase to use for the EFT process suchas "this father-punch emotion" and then proceed with a round oftapping.

    4. After this round of tapping, ask them to GUESS again and

compare that guess to the original one. Typically, it will be anoticeably smaller number.

    5. Perform more rounds of EFT and keep checking in with newintensity guesses. In my experience, a total of 3 or 4 rounds willbring just about everyone down to GUESSES of 0 to 3.

    6. Once the client is down to an acceptably low GUESS, thenperform another round of tapping and, after this round, ask them tovividly imagine the incident. Notice that this is the first time you are

  • 8/14/2019 Level 2 Course

    28/43

    28

asking them to do this. All previous times have been relativelypainless GUESSES. In my experience, just about everyone goes tozero but if not, continue with the Movie Technique or Tell the Story

Technique to address the remaining aspects.Everyone who works with trauma should try this. Try it on groups.Try it on individuals. Try it on war veterans, rape victims and torturevictims. Try it wherever trauma is involved, especially with those whoare afraid of the intensity they usually feel when discussing or"getting into" their incident.

The energy based therapies have been very impressive in theirability to handle negative emotions. That is indelibly clear topractitioners using these procedures. I think the above technique, properly mastered, adds a useful component to the "art of delivery."

For those interested in using this technique with groups, here aresome details. In one of the groups, there were 25 attendees thatidentified a traumatic incident from which they wanted relief. About80% of them estimated their initial intensity to be 8-10 and, in lessthan 20 minutes... twenty of them went to zero three went to a1one went to a 2one went to a 3.

And remember, I did this in a public setting with 25 people at a time(it could be done for over 100 just as easily) and I didn't know any ofthe details about the incidents being worked on (except for the ladywho went to a 3). During the break I worked with the lady who went

to a 3 (from an original 10, incidentally) for about 5 minutes andbrought her down still further.

There was little or no emotional pain evident in the session. That'swhy it is referred to it as The Tearless Trauma Technique. I knowthat minimizing emotional pain is criticized by some members of thehealing community.

After applying this technique, there is a visible and obvious cognitionchange that shows up in the way clients talk about the once

    29

troublesome incident. The client seems done with the issue becausethe resolution that is so highly valued by the more intensetechniques seems to take place within the EFT session with minimal

    pain.

    EFT Procedure for Children

Properly done, this idea will launch our children into an adulthood

filled with high levels of inner peace and self confidence. If everychild was given these benefits our eventual opportunities for worldpeace would far exceed those promised by our military and its bombsand other threats. Indeed, if everyone received these benefitsskilfully, our military, bombs and other threats would likely becomeunnecessary. War is not needed for those who truly have personal peace.

    30

    The Basic Idea:

The basic idea is simple. Every night, while children are being tuckedinto bed, parents should ask...

"Can you tell me about your good and bad thoughts as well as the good and bad things that happened to you today?"

Then, as the events are being told (both good and bad), the parentsshould lightly and lovingly either tap or gently rub the EFT points.

    Expected Results:

Experienced EFT'ers can readily see the benefit for tapping on the"bad" things (we'll talk about tapping on the "good" things later). Asthe child tells the story s/he is clearly "tuned into" theproblem. Thus tapping on the EFT points is likely to resolve theissues or, at the very least, lighten their impacts on the child.

This is critical for children because they are constantly picking up

"stuff" from parents, teachers, peers, television and so on. Theseinputs go on daily and accumulate over the years to fill what weadults often call our "emotional garbage bags." If these inputs gounresolved, of course, they form unnecessary "limits" and thwart theattainment of our true potentials. These unnecessary fears, guilt, grief and traumas often have a thunderous effect on our "adultrealities" and cost us dearly in both our personal peace and ourpocketbooks.

Some examples of the "bad" things children might bring up wouldbe....

"Daddy scared me when he yelled at me."

"I saw a monster eating people on television."

"My teacher doesn't think I'm very smart."

"I can't run as fast as Jimmy."

  • 8/14/2019 Level 2 Course

    31/43

    31

    "Donna is prettier than me."

"The minister said I have to be perfect or God won't love me."

There are, of course, thousands of other examples that establishthemselves as uninvited guests in children's psyches. Most of themare fictions and, arguably, have a far greater impact on how a child'slife unfolds than does their education.

Alert parents have an obvious opportunity to ward off these "selfconfidence suckers" on a daily basis. Further, the process can be

very nurturing for both parents and children because children love tobe touched (tapped, rubbed) in loving ways. As you are loving your(our) children in this way, you can ask them more questions about"what happened today" and get even deeper into the issues. Further,

you can offer reframes (alternative thinking) while doing EFT whichare much more likely to be effective than if you were just bringingthem up in normal conversation.

This whole process is also useful for pre-verbal infants. Even thoughinfants are not able to tell you what is bothering them, the merefact that they are crying or exhibiting other signs of distress tellsparents that something (e.g. a fear, trauma or physical discomfort)needs to be resolved. During these times of distress the infant is"tuned into" the problem and thus primed for EFT. The addition ofEFT tapping to the usual soothing language is likely to pay major longterm dividends.

You may have noticed that the EFT Setup wasnt included within thisprocess. It would be useful to fit it in, of course, although childrenseem to be in less need of it than adults. When adding it in youmight wish to use the language below (children light up when sayingit)....

"Even though I have this ___________________, I'm still an awesome kid."

  • 8/14/2019 Level 2 Course

    32/43

    32

As mentioned earlier, I think it is useful to tap the EFT points evenwhile the child is talking about their "good" thoughts and happeningsfor the day. Properly done, the parental EFT'ing can add a soothing

element to the discussion. Further, even though the child isdiscussing something positive, there is often a "comparing negative"behind it. For example, if the child says...

"My teacher complimented me today in front of the whole class."

....the comparing negative behind it might be...

"But sometimes she scolds children or ignores them and I am afraid that will happen to me."

In this case, even though the tapping is done on the "good"statement by the teacher, it is also likely to reduce the fear involvedin the comparing negative. Thus, applying EFT to both the "good" andthe "bad" items is likely to provide substantial benefits across theboard.

Of course, we are all children and thus this process need not belimited to a specific age group. Wouldn't it be nice, whatever yourage, for someone to ask you about your childhood "stuff"? Andwouldn't it be even nicer to resolve those issues daily? Maybe youcould trade this favour with someone or just simply go through theprocess solo.

It's never too late to have a happy childhood.

    Finding Core Issues

When EFT "doesn't work," it is usually NOT because it doesn't work.Instead, the real reason for not seeing results is because thepractitioner has not applied EFT properly. Perhaps the practitionerhas not been specific enough or maybe emerging aspects are maskingotherwise valid healing work. We have covered these possibilitiesearlier in this tutorial.

There is another important element of sophistication that we need

to explore ... namely ... the discovery of Core Issues. Sometimes aclient's "presenting problem" is nothing more than a symptom of aCore Issue--a much deeper, much more important underlying problem.Once the Core Issue is discovered, it can usually be broken down intospecific events and handled routinely.

There are many live examples of Core Issues throughout the variousEFT training tapes. Finding Core Issues is an art and it requiresexperience to do it expertly. Fortunately, there are some commonsense questions that can help you get to Core Issues quickly. Hereare some of them....

"What does this issue remind you of?" "When was the first time you can remember feeling the same

kind of feeling?" "If there was a deeper emotion underlying this problem, what

might it be?" "If you could live your life over again, what person or event

    would you prefer to skip?"

Please be aware, however, that a favourite answer clients like to giveto these questions is, "I don't know ." When you hear this, bepersistent. You can say, "Well, just guess for me." Their guesses areusually right on target.

Guidelines for using EFT on Serious Diseases

All opinions expressed herein are the opinion of Gary Craig and are not to be confused with medical advice.

To appropriately approach Serious Diseases we must first dispose ofthe "one minute wonder" misconception about EFT. Because of therapid results frequently generated with EFT, it is easy to generalize

from these astonishing "one minute wonders" and assume that ALLissues should respond in moments. Whether or not YOU make thisassumption, we can assure you that many others do.

Even though applying EFT to Serious Diseases may result in "oneminute wonders" on the some of the symptoms, one cannot assumethat EFT will dispose of the broader underlying causes so easily. Infact, persistence and artistic uses of EFT are usually required. This

article will expand on these uses and bring some artistry to theprocess.

    35/43

    35

EFT belongs front and centre on the healing stage. Even though it isonly one of numerous approaches to good health, its clinical resultshave been astonishing to even the most casual observer. Further, it

involves no drugs, surgery, radiation or any other methods that might beinvasive to the body. For these reasons it would seem prudent that EFT be applied, in most cases, BEFORE more drastic measures are taken.

For perspective, lets discuss the various categories of healing:

    1. The Medical Profession: This one is listed first because, in theUSA at least, it is by far the most prominent system. It is promotedas THE place to go for whatever your health problem might be andeverything else is considered "alternative." It has also become soexpensive that it is out of reach for many citizens and, unless costsare curtailed, it even poses a threat to the economic solvency of the US.

It doesn't take great observational skills to see some glaringweaknesses in the medical system. For one thing, the system isseparated out into specialties thus losing sight of the fact that thebody and mind operate together as a whole system. Thus apodiatrist's approach might be quite different from that of aurologist or an orthopaedic surgeon. This is a doubly strange whencompared to the fact that most people I talk to believe, intuitively, that many of their physical ailments are caused by unresolved angers, fears, guilt etc. It is a common sense observation that manyillnesses are physical manifestations of one's unresolved emotions.

Further, the medical profession largely ignores other major doors tohealing (covered below) such as (1) nutrition, (2) the body's subtleenergies, (3) unresolved emotions as a cause of disease and (4) theuse of prayer, meditation and spiritual practices.

    2. Nutrition: This door to healing is obvious. People load themselvesup with sugar, alcohol, additives, preservatives, pesticides and

countless forms of artificial foods thereby taxing the body greatlyand begging for disease. This is one area that EFT does not cover.

  • 8/14/2019 Level 2 Course

    36/43

    36

    3. The Body's Subtle Energies: Oriental health practices haveused the body's subtle energies, known as QI (pronounced Chi), as amainstay for millenniums. Thus, this door is not new. However,

western medicine has chosen to largely ignore this vital approach, preferring to view the body as a "bag of chemicals and body parts"rather than an entity containing pulsating energy. EFT addressesthese subtle energies directly. They are the centrepiece of EFT.

    4. Unresolved Emotions as a Cause of Disease: This is also acentrepiece of EFT's approach to health. Indeed, we have observedmany cases where physical ailments fade as we resolve the anger,

fear or guilt that appears to cause them.5. Prayer, Meditation and Spiritual Methods: There have beenmany reports of healings using group prayer as well as surrogate EFT (a form of prayer). To many, EFT does not appear to be a spiritualmethod. This is because, to newcomers, it seems like a rathermechanical procedure. However, EFT's larger goal is to pave the way fortrue spiritual awareness. As EFT reduces our angers and fears it paves

the way for enhanced levels of personal peace and true forgiveness.

Appropriate Mental Sets while using EFT forSerious Diseases

Here are some appropriate "mental sets" that are useful whenapproaching Serious Diseases with EFT.

    1. While we have observed some fascinating healings with EFT, wemust recognize that EFT is still in its infancy and we don't know allthere is to know about it yet. Thus we must maintain a state ofinquisitiveness rather than assume our current procedures representthe final answer.

    2. Persistence is important. Don't be fooled by "one minutewonders" and conclude that you are done. A client can appear to be

"out of the woods" for now but have other aspects and related issuesshow up later. Many Serious Diseases have multiple causes with manyfacets. Properly addressing them can be like walking through a mazewhere there are many apparent "dead ends." To successfully getthrough the maze you must often back up and try new approaches.

    3. Some Serious Diseases may include causes other than emotional, energetic or spiritual. Heart disease is a good example. While it

may be improved by EFT, it is often contributed to by years ofdietary insults and lack of exercise.

    The EFT Doors to Explore

Over the years we have developed many EFT approaches for solvingthe healing puzzle. They have become "Doors to Explore" andrepresent a wide variety of possibilities for applying EFT. WithSerious Diseases you may get lucky and get impressive results byentering only 1 door. However, in many cases you may need toexplore every door and, perhaps, discover new ones. You may meetwith failure on the first 4 or 5 doors but, with persistence, you mayfind success with the 6th, 8th and 10th doors.

Below is a SUMMARY list of EFT doors, most of which we have coveredalready in detail. They are not listed in any particular order and shouldbe used in whatever order seems appropriate for a given client.

Daily tapping . This one is vital for Serious Diseases because itcreates much needed follow-up by the clients. 10 to 20 roundsof EFT tapping should be performed daily to keep the body'ssubtle energies flowing freely. An easy way for the client toremember to tap is to associate it with daily activities. Forexample, do rounds of tapping just before (1) eating, (2) whenusing the bathroom, (3) when turning the TV on and off (4)when getting in and out of the car and so on.

  • 8/14/2019 Level 2 Course

    39/43

    39

Tapping directly on the symptoms. For example, start EFT with "Even though I have this numbness in my left hand....." This will often give symptomatic relief. If not, then

assume there are emotional drivers behind it and ask, "If there was an emotional reason for this symptom, what could it be?"

Approach the symptoms through metaphors. For example, ask the client, "What does the disease look like inside your body?" or"What does your doctor tell you is going on?" Thenapply EFT for that metaphor. For example, "Even though it

feels like I have glue in my finger joints...."

Sneaking up on the problem. Use this when you expectunderlying emotional issues to be unusually intense. Use globalstatements at first like, "Even though I have all these

problems..." and gradually get more specific until you end upwith a specific issue such as " Even though Dad hit me when I was 8 at my birthday party...."

The Tearless Trauma Technique. This is another way ofapproaching an emotional problem in a gentle way. It involveshaving the client GUESS as to the emotional intensity ratherthan painfully re-live it mentally. Often highly effective.

The Movie Technique. In this process the client narrates hisor her mental movie of a bothersome specific event. Whenintensity comes up the client stops and then taps on thatintensity. When the intensity subsides the client continueswith the story. This method has been a mainstay in the toolbox of many EFT Practitioners.

  • 8/14/2019 Level 2 Course

    40/43

    40

Tell the Story Technique . This is a close cousin of the MovieTechnique.

Being Specific. This is often critical and represents anefficient way of resolving the problem. Most people representtheir problems in a global way e.g. "I have diabetes" OR "I feel abandoned." While success can sometimes be achieved byapproaching these issues in this global way, the odds improvesubstantially if you get to the specifics (or specific events)underlying the problem. Examples, "Even though my blood

sugar level is over 400...." OR "Even though my mother left me alone for three days at my age 8."

Personal Peace Procedure. This is most useful for clienthomework. It involves making a long list of every bothersomespecific event one can think of and using EFT on a daily basis tocollapse them. Obviously, the more negativity that can beremoved the greater the chances of peace taking over.

Emphasizing or Yelling. Sometimes it is necessary to getclients more involved with their issue. This can often beaccomplished by having them strongly emphasize.... or YELL ...the EFT Setup Phrases and Reminder Phrases. This can turn a

"go-nowhere" session into a productive one.

Questions. Here are some questions that may help getting tocore issues...

o If there was an emotional contributor to that symptom, what could it be?

o If you had life to live over again, what person or event would you prefer to skip?

  • 8/14/2019 Level 2 Course

    41/43

    41

o What would it be like to have none of your symptoms? o What benefits are you getting from this illness? o What would you have to give up if your illness went away? o

Who or what are you most angry at? o Why might you deserve this illness?

Chasing the Pain. After applying EFT, physical discomfortscan move to other locations and/or change in intensity orquality. Thus a headache described as a sharp pain behind theeyes at an intensity of 8 might shift to dull throb in back of

the head at an intensity of 7 (or 9, or 3 or any other intensitylevel). Just keep "chasing the pain" with EFT and it will usuallygo to zero or some low number. In the process, emotional issuesbehind the discomforts also become successfully collapsed.

Testing. This is a very important step because, without it,both you and the client can erroneously think you aredone. Whenever feasible, try to re-enact a bothersomememory ...OR... have the client vividly imagine and TRY to getupset ...OR... have the client bend, move or do whatever isnecessary to bring back the symptom (without damagingthemselves, of course). In the process, look for aspects orrelated issues that still need attention.

Humour. Laughter can be used to help clients make newassociations regarding the "severity" of any emotional issuesthey may have. It is also a form of testing because, if a clientcan now laugh or smile at a trauma, fear, etc., then you know

you have made good progress. On the other hand, if thehumour is met with scowls or intense reactions then you know

you have more work to do.

    42/43

Imagine perfect health and observe tail-enders. This is agood method for finding subtle emotional issues that tend tokeep the ailment around. Ask the client to vividly imagine

themselves in perfect health (i.e. completely without theirsymptoms) and then ask him or her to listen for the "tail-enders" or "yes buts" that show up as self talk. These tail-enders are often clues to the real impediments to healing.

Reframing within the Setup procedure--THROUGH you, not BYyou. Reframing is a procedure often used within conventional talk

therapy to help a client see their issue through different, healthierglasses. Reframes land MUCH more solidly if done while tapping andthus use the Setup portion of the EFT procedure to not only correctpsychological reversal but to also establish useful reframes. Duringthis process, "get yourself out of the way" and rely on "guidance"that allows you to apply healing that goes THROUGH you not BY

you. Everyone has the intuitive abilities to do this. Success, however, depends on truly trusting that intuition.

This completes Level 2 of the EFT course. Congratulations!!

You should now feel confident and well equipped to apply the tools ofEFT on relevant issues for both yourself and others. Be creativewith your use of EFT and trust that you have a deeper wisdom andintuition that can guide you in using it.

Wishing you all the best on your journey of healing with EFT.
