SMOS L2 Ocean Salinity

• pre-FAT delivery 27 May, FAT 21-22 June

• What’s new in v500?– No longer setting Fm_valid to false when Fm_l1c_rfi flag is set– Fm_l1c_rfi = new L1c RFI tails flag (or’d with mitigation, strong, & point RFI flags)– Dg_L2_RFI replaces Dg_eaf_fov in UDP (L1c no longer contains Fm_eaf_fov)

• OSUDP2 minor schema change (requiring SDV/BEAM update)

– Removed Fg_ctrl_poor_geophysical from quality tests– Fixed SPH poor counter of successful retrieval

• see http://www.argans.co.uk/smos/L2OS/verification.php

– L2 RFI detection/mitigation: new AUX_CNFOSD/F thresholds & schema• RFI_std = 1.2, RFI_nsig = 3, Tg_num_RFI_max = 33%

– No longer setting Fm_L1c_sun when Fm_L1c_sun_tails flag is set– Other PRs fixed:

• Outlier detection now calculates median of differences as specified in ATBD• Name of the processor in log messages now conforms with ICD (includes L2OS version)• Corrected BULL_B orchestration

• Sun point is marked with a 0.15 diameter circle in cosdir– ESL: agreed, circle with r = 0.075

• Width of suntails is fixed at 0.01 in cosdirESL: sun tail flag should be closer to 0.1 than 0.01,(but low impact on salinity)

L2OS: if Fml1c_sun_point or Fml1c_sun_glint_fov then Fm_l1c_sun= true, Fm_valid = false

• Width of border flag is 0.01 in cosdir• Width of belt and suspenders is 0.02 in cosdir

Dg_RFI_L1 Fm_L2_RFI Fg_ctrl_suspect_RFI

Dg_RFI_L1: % Fm_l1c_rfi (from all 4 L1c RFI flags) – in this case, only from Fm_RFI_Point

Fm_RFI_Point: set if measurement has been affected by point source RFI identified in the AUX_RFI list, or it has exceeded an RFI threshold, or is negative

Correlation between L1 & L2 RFI to be investigated

Product Performance• Once new L1 500 and L2OS 500 are implemented in DPGS, check:

– Ascending/descending differences– Land contamination– L1/L2 RFI detection/mitigation– Impact of sun and galactic signals– Performance of new roughness models (RGHNS1 received 26/05/2011)– Comparison of SMOS to Argo and climatology (SSS, WS)

• Timetable?– L1OP & L2OS -> DPGS July 2011?– Analysis of August 2011 L2OS products– QWG#6 September 2011– Go-ahead for reprocessing?
