All apprentices must work towards level 2 Functional Skills. If it is deemed appropriate for the apprentice to start at level 1, then they must start working towards level 2 as soon as level 1 is achieved. If you think that this effects the apprentice, please discuss this with the Regional Training Manager
If the apprentice has already achieved Level 2 in English or Maths ( i.e. Level 2 Functional Skills, GCSE grade A*- C) that meets the minimum requirements of the apprenticeship framework before they start, then they are exempt from taking English, Maths or ICT.
If the apprentice has already achieved a Level 1 in either English, Maths or ICT (i.e. Level 1 Functional Skills, GCSE grade D-E) that meets the minimum requirements of the apprenticeship framework before they start, they must start, continue to study and take the test for Level 2.
The apprentice’s initial assessment results will determine which level English, Maths and ICT they are enrolled on. If the apprentice achieves below level 1 then it may be appropriate for the apprentice to start with Level 1 functional skills. However, if they achieve a level 1 or level 2, then they will be enrolled onto Level 2 functional skills. All learners must work towards and aspire to achieve level 2 Functional Skills.
