Level 3 Strategies

Who needs Level 3 Strategies?• Students that are not responding to Level 1

and 2 strategies in the general classroom.• Students with chronic behavioral concerns

that are interrupting instruction.• Students that need maximum structures to be

successful in the school environment.

Level 3 Behaviors• Chronically disrupt instruction.• Students that have an identified disability

and could harm themselves or others. • Students that require you to keep an eye on

them at all times.

Who else might need Level 3 Strategies?

• Frequent office visitors from multiple areas of the school (cafeteria, bus, bathrooms,etc.)

• Students that are being considered for More Restrictive Placements (Alternative Schools, Special Classes, etc.)

Will Level 3students be

in my classroom???

The short answer is YES!

Level 3 Students Need a Team Approach

• Teachers• Administrators• Mentors• Nurse• Parents• Student Support Team• IEP/ 504 Team

Ok, what can the team do?

• Help in an emergency when student is out of control.

• Remove the student from the room and give a cool down period.

• Document the issues and attempted solutions.

Common Behaviors and StrategiesDisrupting class

Using inappropriate or vulgar language

Hitting/fightingLeaving classroom/school

without permission

Assign a work space away from peers.

Talk to student privately and ask for cooperation.Notify office for help.Notify office about

elopement.

Triggers for the Level 3 Student

• Requests from the teacher.• Statements by peers.• Not having supplies or homework.• Coming to school stressed from bus ride.• Always anything!!!

Non-Verbal Triggers

• Standing over a student (Domineering).• Squaring off directly in front of student (this

stance if viewed as confrontational).• Touching them (In some cultures, this is

considered aggression.)• Taking their supplies.

Verbal Triggers

• Sarcastic remarks• Teasing• Drawing attention

to them • Threatening• Setting them up

What will I need to know to successfully work with a Level 3 student?

• Understanding of how a disability effects behavior and learning.

• How do I get help in an emergency from the office or home?

• What is expected from me?

Where can I find info aboutdisabilities and syndromes?

• National Institute of Childhood Health (NICHY) has a 1 page sheet on every disability.

• Ask a special educator or nurse.

• Ask the parent.

How do I implement an IEP or 504 plan?

• Demand a copy of the plan if you are expected to implement it.

• Ask the special educator or counselor to review the plan with you.

• Ask for assistance when you need it!!

Where can I find out how a disability effects behavior and learning?

• NICHY is a great source to understand common behaviors and learning difficulties but remember each child may have unique needs.

Methods for NotEscalating Behaviors

• Allow them to take a break and cool down.

• Send them on an errand.• Remain calm on the

outside even though you may be mad on the inside.

• Treat them respectful because they may be back in your class tomorrow.
