Stage plan overview:

Introduction Recap “Happy Classroom” from last week to reinforce rules for the lessons. Then put students into pairs and ask them to brainstorm as

many school subjects as they can think of. Share answers – who got the most? Discuss which subjects students like / dislike.Supporting Tasks

Write a simple sentence on the board and ask what is wrong: My favourite subject is history. (it should be History). Ask students what words need a capital letter – do they know the difference between common and proper nouns (ensure they know

‘noun’ first!)? Explain that proper nouns require a capital letter and are the name of something specific, whereas common nouns do not need capital letters. Draw a line down the middle of the board and label one side with common and other side with proper. Invite students to come up and write a noun in the relevant column. If they are not sure, say a noun (e.g. Hong Kong – proper, table – common) and they write it in the correct column.

Students complete Activity Sheet 1 – Nouns. Ask where we always see a capital letter in a sentence (at the start). What do we see at the end? (usually a full stop). To practise

today’s main skills, students complete Activity Sheet 2 – Punctuate. Work through PB pp.4-5 Exercises 7,11,12 then AB p.4

Main Task Circle errors on AB p.6 Exercise 16. Students then rewrite the information onto lined paper, making the necessary corrections.

Post Task Activities Students can write about their dream school timetable (AB p.16 Ex18).

Time permitting, ask students about their school teachers – what do they think they do after school? Read My Teacher’s Secret Life to them. (Level 1 students from programme 4 last year will be familiar with this book.) Use Teacher Resource 1 for comprehension game. Students can retell this story or write about their favourite part (and illustrate), making sure they capitalise and punctuate accurately.

Lesson Log Students complete their Lesson Log and Self Assessment - Task 2

Extension: Students complete School Subjects by completing the sentences and finding the words in the word search and the additional worksheets about punctuation

Teacher Resource 1

If you do have time to read My Teacher’s Secret Life to your class, then check their understanding afterwards. You can do this by:

putting students into teams then ask these questions adapt the questions so they are true/false. Assign an area in the classroom for ‘true’ and

another for ‘false’. Students must run to the correct area to show their answer. Using the counters below, students are in two teams lined up. Only the person at the head of

the line can answer the question, keep changing. If the question is answered correctly, the counter is moved by blowing it along the carpet. Mark a start and finish line on the carpet (with tape).

Questions1) What is the new teacher’s name? Mrs Quirk2) What is her first name? Isabelle3) What time does school finish? Three o’clock4) Where does the author think she lives? At school5) Who is Miss Whistle? The gym teacher6) Who is Miss Painter? The art teacher7) Who makes sure the teachers behave when they eat?
