Level Three Statistics and Modelling
(University Entrance)

What is Stats and Modelling?
using history to predict the future
to be awarded University Entrance, you must:
achieve at least 14 credits from a range of approved standards - both Unit and Achievement
and no, I will not change my mind about that.
this course gives you the opportunity to achieve 9 credits through internal assessment. This means you have to do the external exam!
Why study Stats?Business management uses detailed stat and modelling analysis of data from all parts of business operation - sales (what, how much, to who, when etc), costs (wages, rent, buildings, product purchase, manufacture, transport etc) and market researchGovernments (national, regional and local) use statistics to model future needs, to help them develop new policiesScience depends upon statistics - examples include medical drug trials, experimental observations, population studies.
the standards for the course are...
AS90644 Solve Equations External, 4 credits
AS90643 Solve straightforward problems involving probability External, 4
AS90642 Calculate confidence intervals for population parameters External, 3
AS90641 Determine the trend for time series data Internal, 3
AS90647 Use a mathematical model involving curve fitting to solve a problem
Internal, 3
this is based on commerce - eg sales records - but is also useful for science data analysis
the most important standard, it uses historic data and develops probability theory. Often used for scientific trial data analysis and popular surveys.
Conceptually rewarding, it studies relationships between distinct qualities.
Quite fun. Uses concepts from the time-series standard, but you learn to do the math to derive the equation for the line of best fit.Very visual and straight-
forward. You get to draw Venn Diagrams and learn basic set theory.A spot of calculus! A process of repeated
calculations to work out roots, equation solutions etc. Ties in nicely with the data graph equation standards.
AS90645 Select and analyse continuous bivariate data Internal, 3
