PUTTING THE SERVE IN TENNISThe Connecticut Open once again leveraged its status as a 501 (c) 3 nonprofit to support several local charities with their respective missions. The 2016 tournament:

• Raised more than $32,000 for breast cancer research through the Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale New Haven

• Raised $8,175 for ShopRite Partners in Caring Food Drive supporting the Connecticut Food Bank, enough to provide 16,350 meals to those in need statewide

• Collected 550 pounds of shoes that will be refurbished and distributed throughout the USA and the world by Soles4Souls

• Partnered with Yale to host its annual Salovey-Swensen Extravaganza, which has raised more than $16 million since 1997 to support Yale’s community-based activities throughout the New Haven region.

Television coverage reached more than 160 countries. In the United States, ESPN produced more than 40 hours of match coverage delivered via ESPN2 and ESPN3.

Total attendance was 51,725, making this the second straight year that the tournament drew more than 51,000. The event is one of the top 5 attended women’s-only tennis tournaments in the world.

Affluent, educated, active and engaged audience.Spectators come from 29 different states and around the world.

2016 Olympic gold medal winner Elena Vesnina took part in the Player Challenge benefiting Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale New Haven.

Sergeant First Class Justin Wade sang the National Anthem prior to the finals on United Technologies Military Appreciation Day, and the James Hillhouse High School JROTC Color Guard presented the colors.
