When I was asked to give a songwriting workshop at the Freeland Library, I had no idea that it would evolve into the creation of a new CD, which you are probably listening to right now and hopefully enjoying, right? I mean, what a cool idea, to get a bunch of strangers in the same room and share in the creative process of writing a song. I still get a chill knowing that in the time frame of 1 to 2 hours, we decided on a style, came up with a bunch of lyrics, and somehow put them all together to make sense. Almost blows my mind. We called the song “Mirrors”. :: Afterwards, I took the inspiration home and recorded every instrument by myself, one at a time, in a studio the size of a big shoebox. Listening to it, I was amazed. So I thought, why stop with one song? Why not just keep going and see what happens? So I did. Eventually I ended up giving my workshop to 8 different libraries within King, Snohomish and Island Counties in the state of Washington. Each group I worked with was unique. I remember one group of about 25 from Carnation, a mix of 4th graders and elderly folk that were so fun and inspiring to work with. We decided that the song we were writing should be a little bit country, a little bit funky and about chickens. Guess which song that was? Another group that I worked with, from Covington, actually made me feel good about being a human. We all connected with a passion for out planet and couldn’t have put that feeling more perfectly into words. Listen to the song “Make a Difference” and tell me that the lyrics don’t make you think about what’s happening right now. :: As part of what I do, I teach private music lessons at a super cool music store called Joe’s Island Music in Langley, WA. It just seemed natural that I should start writing songs with some of my students and include them as part of this CD. One of my favorites was with my student, Jake, on the song “Rockin’ Horse”. We started with a little riff on the guitar, worked on the lyrics, and the song just magically came together. But that wasn’t the case for every song. I found that there was usually a hurdle that would present itself at some point either in the writing or the recording process. As with any experiment, there is a great unknown. In my opinion, this unknown is where magic happens. One minute a song isn’t that good, just lacking something, and then magic happens and it turns into the best song ever! When I was giving a workshop in Kenmore, working on the song “Dragon”, everyone seemed to be self-conscious about adding to the song. So I basically just went around the room and asked everyone for one word that I could use, and people seemed to be okay with that. I ended up using the words as inspiration to the story of the song. I used the sound of construc-tion in the song because all the librarians were in great anticipation of the new library that was going to be built. :: At some point I started inviting people into my recording studio to show them how I record music. With an idea, a few microphones, some instruments and a computer, you can really do a lot. I had a blast with Aden and Luca, two brothers ages 9 and 10. I invited them over to my studio for a BBC interview and together we wrote the song “Shout It Out”. I worked with Bryce and Quinn on the song “Blackheart”, where they used their fists and pounded the sound of a heartbeat on their chests. I also taught them Rock Star Image 101. They look wickedly cool in sunglasses. James Hinkley, the best cellist ever, came over and laid down a wailing violin track on the song “Bones”, a song I wrote with my student Tommy. Jasper came over and laid down some guitar on the song we wrote together called “Stone”. You see how interesting my life is, a new experience with every new song! :: My philosophy behind this album is this… you should share your knowledge because through sharing we can learn and grow as individuals. When I was putting together my first album, I didn’t have any money or any idea what could be possible in the recording studio. Fortu-nately, I had a very giving friend and mentor who allowed me the use of his time and equipment. He didn’t even charge me! Maybe this project is how I can pay him back, and maybe those who I have inspired will do the same down the road. Thank you everyone, this was such a fun project to work on. Keep on Rockin.

Mirrorswritten at the Freeland, WA Sno-Isle Library

What’s it gonna takeTo know you through and throughCause I been staring at the wall nowI can’t see to you

Couldn’t you just stand in one placeAnd see reflections I see in youWhen everything else I’ve seenSeems to be fake

Cause everywhere I look it’s a mirrorAnd they’re all the sameDo you ever get tired of putting a face to a nameFace to a name

Like a mirror with a hole in the middleLike Alice through a looking glassWho are you really girlDo I even want to ask

What am I really afterWhat is it I’m looking forWhen will I get beyond thisWhen will I push past

How could I let this goWhen all I do is think of youMy heart my body my soulAre awake but when will I know

Mazewritten at the Federal Way, WA King County Library

I’m part of this planetWalking through the treesWondering what is the purpose for me

Sometimes I don’t understand itBut I have a curiosity I must indulge the myself in me

I got the whole world to exploreI can sing and have a wonderful timeOne day of my life I will turn into a butterfly A Who Yah, Who YahThere’s only one thing to doIn a maze never fear that is a ah ah ah in mind

I often try to find itBut it’s something I can’t seeI wonder what is the purpose for me

I hope I find an answerOr at least the things I needI must indulge the myself in me

I got the whole world to exploreI can sing and have a wonderful timeOne day of my life I will turn into a butterfly A Who Yah, Who YahThere’s only one thing to doIn a maze never fear that is a ah ah ah in mind

Rockin’ Horsewritten with Jake Lindsay

Sitting on a rockin’ horseRiding on my last dimeAllergic to happinessWho killed Leonard Bernstein

Got a thousand million visionCause I ate a carrot last nightWishin’ I had a fishing poleSo I could take a marlin in a fight

I don’t want no televisionI don’t want no big decisionsI just want to go on wishin’That I have a thousand women

Give myself a ride for freeLive my life within a dreamIf you want you can come with meSitting on the saddle of a little horsy

It’s quiet here on the back of this little horsyAnd it sure would be nice if you were to come with meWe could split the cost right down the middle 60/50We’ll take our time To just unwindSmell the flowers go byOn the back of this little horsy

I Owe It All To Youwritten at the Sultan, WA Sno-Isle Library

I woke up late I’m 15 minutes behindEverything’s the same I think I’m losing my mindAn unconditioned love was all that we could beBut the thought of losing you is slowly killing me

Why do I feel this way about love gone astrayI wish that you were here right now to hear what I have to sayWhy did you walk there are still things that I needHow can you just watch me while my heart bleeds

I thought you’d be the one to carry me awayTo take me from my darkness and show me the right waySomething so small somehow grewNow all the love and faith I have I owe it all to youI owe it all to you

Memories of our yesterday still etched upon my mindI want to be there again but I’m scared of what I’ll findI read a lot of books because they tickle my mindI have a loss of words whenever you walk by

When I Get Homewritten with Oliver Rock

Working all week a day at a timeIf I stop for a minute I get left behindYou can ever get anything for freeWonder why this ever happened to me

I said oh I’ll be home soonWon’t be long before I’m through I said oh I’ll be alrightWhen I get home to you tonight

Wake up late wipe the sleep from my eyesWhen I get to work I feel like I could dieGimme a chance to get out of my headWon’t you just let me go back to bed

I’d rather be in my dreamsI’d rather feel the way you feel

Working all week a day at a timeIf I stop for a minute I get left behindYou can ever get anything for freeWonder why this ever happened to me

Boneswritten with Tommy Morgen-Burke

Walkin’ down a desert roadKick me along a little stonePush my face on the hard concreteWhen it’s time for me to sleepI’ve got nothing and nowhere to goWalkin’ down this desert road

Wish I had a cheep hotelWith a long line of truckers and a bathroom smellHaven’t seen a pretty face in a whileWear something sexy and I’ll give you a smileI’ve got nothing and nowhere to goWalkin’ down this desert road

Now I’ve got this feelin’ in my bonesThat I’ll find the answer down the road, down the road

Someone said there is a placeWhere answers come before the question is raisedMoments later you find yourselfAnd that will be the end of a constant hellI’ve got nothin’ and a long way left to goWalkin’ down this desert road

Now I’ve got this feelin’ in my bonesLookin’ for somethin’ I just don’t know

Give me some informationGive me some inspirationShow me the way out of my cellGive me a ticket so I can go home

Best Day Of My Lifewritten at the Stanwood, WA Sno-Isle Library

Wind always blows the door shutSlams it in my faceWell I don’t care I wont let it get me downDancing around the roomWithout a care in the worldWhen I look at you and can’t help but smile

I see the sunTall grass is blueSky’s so soft and I love youThis is the bestDay of my lifeSo nothing can bring me down

Dr. Pepper is loud for a headacheIt bubbles up my noseI don’t care I wont let it get me downDancing around in the poring rainWithout a care in the worldWhen I see you I can’t help but smile

Believewritten the at Bothell, WA King County Library

Within the walls of a crystal palaceThe mad hatter sits all aloneSomewhere on the road to find his fameHe fell into a trap and can’t remember his name

And so he’s left to wonderAbout the life he leads

The monkey king summersaults through the skyUnder the mountain is where I will wait for youFor someday I will be free againTo move my presence slowly westward

And so I’m left to wonderAbout the life I lead

And so I must follow I must followTo what I believe

Make A Differencewritten at the Covington, WA King County Library

As time comes and goesIt’s a time nobody knowsJust before the running of the bulls

The sun is lost behind the snowA covered landscape falls and my toes Are brushing cool reflecting water

The world is a beautiful placeSo please take care and don’t you waste nowWouldn’t it be nice to be around a little longer

With all the colors in the skyGetting more beautiful all the timeI’ll remember you in my heart now

Your so nice to me I hope That we become good friendsPut aside your griefI know we can make a difference

Take all you can and you’ll seeThere is an end when you use everything

My heart is beating like a melodyIn my head a memory Just before the running of the bullsLet all love come togetherWhen we sit to dinner on the ground

Shout It Outwritten with Aden and Luca Fallows

I like to play the guitarI want to drive a carI stand up on the hood and belt it outWhen I sing my song I start to shoutShout it out

I’ve heard most people need money to liveBut it gets a little ugly cause money can’t giveI’ll give everything that I can giveWhen I sing my song I start to shoutShout it out

I will play my guitar to the endI will sing this song because I canI’ll stand up on the hood and belt it outWhen I sing my song I’ll start to shoutShout it out

The Dragonwritten at the Kenmore, WA King County Library

I read a lot of books to enlighten my soulBut nothing is coming so I don’t really knowI’m philosophical if anythingBut all I really want to be is serene

I’m sorry I was going to make you leaveAfter I tried so hard to get youSometimes I watch the birds as they singIt’s all that helps me get through

I try to find the balance in many thingsHope we can build a bridge to meet youI drink clean water on a clear blue nightWhatever I can do to feel new

Feels like a dragon has latched on to me…

Blackheartwritten with Quinn Hassrick and Bryce Auburn

First of all lets get this offI cut my hair with scissorsI’m going my own way soonThrough a snowstorm in June

No food, water or shelterA worn leather vestWith a patch on the heartSo you can’t see my blackheartI have a blackheart…

I’m half way there to telling youBeen eating mashed potatoesThey’ve put me back right to the startBut I’ll never give up

I found a hidden telephoneAnd painted it with yellowBut now it’s time for me to runMy guitar is all I knowI have a blackheart…

My heart is black but no one knowsAnd soon I’ll be much olderTomorrow I’ll know which way to goI’ll show you how I knowI have a blackheart…

Stonewritten with Jasper Hayes

I try to find a way to youCan’t be alone foreverMy time can only burn my soulCould it be I lost myself

Then I’m on top of the worldLike so many times before

If you could only lend me a stoneTo break away the fear from it all

Them chickens became famousTheir music went world wideThey called their band the chicksAnd then they diedAnd at the funeral we sang a sad sad songAnd couldn’t believe our eyes when they sang alongThe chicks came back to life Back to life…

I love chicken Baby!

“I recorded the group singing and used them in the outro of the song.” - LB

The Chicken Song written at the Carnation, WA King County Library

There was an old lady who loved her chickensShe liked them pretty ones with red, red feathersEspecially red feathersAnd the chickens had the softest cutest chicks imaginableSome were orange and purple, and some wanted to be rock stars

Those rock star chickens became famousTheir music went world wideThey called their band the chicksThen you found out that the chickens diedThe chickens diedI don’t really know why they didThey just did

Them chickens became famousTheir music went world wideThey called their band the chicks and then they diedAnd the people said they were the bestAnd now it’s time to lay them chickens to rest

At the funeral we sang a sad sad songWe couldn’t believe our eyes when they sang alongThe chicks came back to lifeBack to lifeI don’t really know why they didThey just did
