CUSTOM HARDWARE

Austrian Ash is fi nished in a soft satin black, and accented on certain tops with a custom silver inlay.

Many items feature solid metal bases, in a custom polished silver fi nish.

Dining chairs are standard in black leather 9483-71 Gypsum, with polished silver nailhead trim.

The hardware and accent trim are inspired by classic Campaign styling, featuring recessed pulls, custom corner hardware, and angled hardware on the sides of the case. All hardware features a polished silver fi nish.

Campaign furniture designs were originally conceived as a means by which high-ranking military offi cers could transport the

comforts of home into the fi eld of operations called campaigns - hence the name “campaign furniture.” Design elements were

entirely practical as well as decorative - including recessed drawer handles to avoid the risk of breakage, porter’s handles on

either end of a piece to facilitate portability, custom corner hardware to protect edges from damage during transport, and

angled hardware on the sides to ensure the integrity of the case. While Campaign furniture dates to the expeditions of Julius

Caesar, the idea fl ourished during the colonial age of the British Empire (the Georgian and Victorian periods). Gentlemen in

high military and government positions wanted the same furnishings and living conditions abroad that they enjoyed at home.

Designers like Thomas Chippendale and George Hepplewhite were renowned for producing stylish yet portable items, including

beds, desks, bookcases, wardrobes, sofas, and even billiard tables. Such suites were made in Britain according to the style of

the day, and would not have looked out of place in a fashionable London town house. Ultimately, Campaign furniture became a

visual symbol of the splendor of the empire. As the nineteenth-century scientist and travel writer Sir Francis Galton

observed, “The luxuries and elegances practicable in tent-life are only limited by the means of transport.”

WOOD SURFACES

As with any custom black fi nish, surface scratches are more noticeable due to the refl ectivity of the fi nish. Take extra care in moving items across surfaces, and use felt pads underneath all tabletop items. Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight. Do not leave plastic or rubber materials on wood surfaces. Clean with a non-silicone furniture polish. Do not use a polish with a petroleum base. Do not place hot dishes directly on the wood surfaces. Avoid all solvents (nail polish remover, alcohol, etc.). Avoid abrasives of any kind.

POLISHED SILVER METAL SURFACES

The beauty of the polished silver fi nish on the bases and metal hardware in Black Ice lie in their refl ective properties. Surfaces will show fi nger prints, which is normal, and should be cleaned with a damp,lint-free cotton cloth. Metal surfaces are fi nished with a protective lacquer coating. Do not use ammonia-based cleaners on any metal surfaces. Due to the refl ectivity, areas where the metal has been welded may exhibit slight inconsistencies in the surface fi nish. These are not manufacturing defects, but a normal characteristic of metal fabrication.

To prevent drying and fading, keep leather furniture away from direct sunlight and avoid close proximity to heating sources. Regular dusting with a clean white cloth is recommended on a weekly basis. Keep in mind that leather is not indestructible - it can be scratched, cut and marked with sharp objects just as fabric.
