NATURE LIES BLEEDING. A PLEA FOR YOUR HELP.
The cover picture is my best guess for what we may see in the coming weeks/months. It
has been said that the ‘Polar Vortex’, that gigantic swirl of icy wind around the North
Pole, is being destabilised by unusually warm air pushing into it from lower latitudes and
thus it will probably undergo a phenomenon called ‘collapse’. When this happens, the
cold air in the polar vortex will spill south and we could be in its firing line, bringing us a
colder period than in recent years. When we get a cold spell, some people, tend to
proclaim that global heating is a fallacy. This isn’t the case - you only have to look at the
longer term effects which are amplifying the severity of wildfires all the way from Arctic
and Australia and more frequent extreme weather such as flooding - warmer seas
meaning moister air which spills heavier rain. Those people protesting about
government inaction on the climate emergency - for it really is an emergency - do have a
point. Polite words have achieved little over the last 30 years thanks to lobbying from
the fossil fuel industry. Did you know that for all the vilification of agriculture’s and
transport’s influence on the climate, the one real villain of the piece is the emission of
methane from the thousands of active and defunct coal mines around the world?
Methane is an incredibly potent cause of global heating. How to capture the methane at
the source? It’s often too dilute to capture it at all yet it’s still escaping at enormous
volumes. Nature is under pressure from many directions. The seasons are shifting faster
than species can adapt to, and along with this problem, the pressure on land use from
development and intensive agriculture is playing a part in the decline of many species.
This winter, please look out for our wildlife. Put out bird food and leave shelter for small
mammals. The countryside has, largely, been stripped bare of food for wildlife by the
ever-present habit of flail-trimming the hedges into oblivion. Hedgerows are rarely
allowed to attain that second year’s wood which is essential to producing seeds and
fruits. And when there are fruits - those blackberries, hips and haws beloved by birds
such as blackbirds - they are usually conveniently flailed into dust before anything has
had a chance to eat them. We noticed a sudden influx of birds into the garden which
coincided with the final flailing of some particularly bounteous hedges - their
countryside food source had been taken away and so the gardens, whilst unsafe due to
the local cats’ predations , were the last port of call in their search for food. The garden
berries have now all been eaten. My plea: please consider wildlife in the way you
manage your land, be it your garden, woods or fields. Don’t just carry on as usual or it
will be too late. Rob

TREBULLETT CHAPEL
On the first Saturday in November Sheila and I braved the awful weather to travel to Truro for the first Mission Roadshow to be held in Cornwall. This is a new venture for our nationwide Methodist connexion to demonstrate how Methodist Churches and other organisations in a District reach out to people. Trebullett had a table showing all our ventures over the last few years including our Live Nativity from 2016, our Easter Discovery Trail, the Harvest Experience and the Centenary weekend commemorating the end of WW1, the beginning of Votes for Women and the founding of the RAF from the RFC. Coad’s Green also had a table showing their wonderful poppies with which they had “bombed” the village and South Petherwin featured their Tea and Toast mornings. We had many stop at our stall to ask where we were in Cornwall and to talk about what we do and also some who had lived in or near Trebullett and wanted to tell us what had been done in their time. It was a really good day, despite the weather.
On Shoebox Sunday, 4th November, we held a family service led by Sheila. There were about 20 shoeboxes donated full of gifts for children overseas for whom this will be their only Christmas presents. The boxes were blessed and will now be well on their journey to the children who will receive them.
Remembrance Sunday saw us join with our friends at St Briochus Church for a poignant service led by Robin West. It’s always good to worship together and we will see more of this next year at the Christian Unity Service.
Our Christmas events are now to the fore, particularly the Christmas Meal and Entertainment which is on Saturday 30th November. This is always a popular event so if you would like to come, please mention it to a chapel member. All welcome. When I say that rehearsals for the entertainment are well under way and that all the participants know their lines, those who come every year will know that my tongue is a little in my cheek! However, it will be an evening of good company with a delicious supper and (we hope) hilarious entertainment followed by a few popular Christmas carols. Come and enjoy the first event of the Christmas season. Our other Christmas events are shown on the church/chapel services page.
Now to a very sad note, the death of Richard Burt. Richard and Sheila came to live in Trekenner just over 3 years ago and came to our chapel straight away. Sheila always says that the Lord brought them here and we are so very glad that He did. Both have become and integral part not only of our chapel membership and activities but in the parish and around and in Launceston too. Richard was a real Christian man, always ready to share his faith with others. He had a great love and knowledge of the Bible and was always happy if someone asked him a question about a text or chapter; he and Sheila helped to lead our Parish Bible Study Group and lead the Prayer Group too. We will miss him greatly as will Sheila and all his family and friends. Our love and prayers are with Sheila and the family at this time. (Richard’s son, Graeme, has provided an obituary for him which is on page 30. Jill

have a little spare time to help others use the internet. Carolyn is happy to provide practical support to help residents use online services with confidence. If you would like some help, such as accessing the internet, setting up an
email address or completing a form online Carolyn is happy to provide some guidance. You can contact Carolyn by email [email protected] or call her on 01579 370886.
HEDGE TRIMMING The Parish Council would remind residents of their hedge trimming responsi-bilities regarding roadside hedgebanks adjacent to the highway to ensure safe passage of pedestrians, horse riders and vehicles. It is recommended that
November to February is the best time to complete this task so as to cause the least disturbance to wildlife. For further information and advice, please contact Cornwall Council Highways Department on 0300 1234 100.
Official Opening of Trekenner’s new library… in a telephone box.
Trekenner’s 1937 King George’s Silver Jubilee telephone box, no longer needed by BT, has officially come back to life in its new guise of Public Library. For many days in the late summer local Parish Council member Godfrey Holter had given it a careful restoration with fresh red, black and gold paint, polished glass, new bookshelves and signage; a starter supply of books came from Mary Synott, another local volunteer. The grand opening was on Tuesday 29th October aided by the schoolchildren from Trekenner Primary School who presented their project file on Repurposing Everyday Objects. After a speech by Councillor (Ind.) Neil Burden who told the gathering about the history of these phone-boxes, Godfrey was presented with a ‘thank-you’ rosette by local Anne Sheldrake who also provided the flowers outside the new Library.

LEZANT LUNCH CLUB
PARISH YOUTH CLUB:
Only On Fridays
Lezant Oof Club goes from strength to strength with children enjoying socialising, play-
ing and different activities each week. All children age 8 years and above are welcome
to join us. We meet at Trebullett Hall on Friday evening 6.30 - 8pm. All welcome for
£1 entry and £1 for tuck if they wish.
Our last Oof club before Christmas will be Friday 6th December and we will back in the
New Year starting on Friday 10th January. Contact Louise 01566 782203.
The October Lezant Lunch Club meeting was very well attended and greatly
enjoyed. Brenda Hooton welcomed everyone with some more of her jokes. The cooks gained a round of applause for the roast beef, roast potatoes, York-
shire pudding, vegetables and fruit trifle, topped with cream.
Viv Sandercock told us about the history of stamp collecting and began his talk with the picture of an Egyptian clay tablet which had been sent many thou-sands of years ago. Viv explained the many ways messages were sent through
the ages, on stone, slate and papyrus, either engraved or marked with different types of ink and graphite. There were many ways of collecting payment for delivery. At first the receiver was asked to pay, which was fine if they had
money and could also read. Later the sender paid an amount which took into account the weight of the letter, the number of pages and the distance it had to travel. There have been many shapes and sizes of stamps, circular, triangu-lar and square for example, printed to show what had been paid for what pur-
pose, varying from country to country and from time to time. Specimen and commemorative stamps were produced, some singly, some in books. Viv pro-jected many examples of these postage stamps, far too numerous to mention
here. There is a Launceston Stamp Club which has recently celebrated its forti-eth anniversary. If you would like to join the Lezant Lunch Club please telephone Ruth on
01566 782286 or Audrey on 01566 773062 for more details and to reserve a
place.

Richard Burt 1952-2019
Richard was born in Windsor in 1952. He joined the Metropolitan Police Force straight from
school, first as a police cadet and subsequently
as a police officer. In 1972 he met his wife
Sheila and they married less than a year later.
Together they raised three children, Helen,
Emma and Graeme.
Richard and Sheila started married life living in
Central London. In 1975 they moved to
Romford in Essex to raise their growing family.
Richard had grown up in Windsor in the house his father Kingsley had
built and in 1985 Richard bought the house from his father. Richard and
the family would make the move to Windsor on the other side of
London.
During his working life Richard served at various police stations
throughout London. He was a police advanced driver and a firearms
officer. He worked as a police sniper on many high-profile security
incidents and events in London. He finished his career in charge of a
counter terrorism firearms unit at Heathrow airport.
Richard moved down to Trekenner three and half years ago joining his
son Graeme and daughter-in-law Jo who had moved down the previous
year. He appreciated the warm and friendly welcome he and Sheila
received, quickly getting involved in a number of activities in the local
community. He was a committed Christian who worshipped regularly at Trebullett Chapel, became a Circuit Steward for the Launceston Area
Circuit of the Methodist Church and was involved with North Cornwall
Gideons. He had a passion for sharing the Bible with as many people as
possible, regularly preaching at various Chapels in Cornwall and Devon
and led hymn singing at Kernow house.
Richard was a kind, caring and generous man. At his heart he was a family man who loved his wife, children and grandchildren very much.
His death was sudden having been taken ill over the previous weekend.
Richard has fallen asleep in Jesus and will wake again in Glory.
A service of thanksgiving will be held at Trebullett Methodist Chapel.

LEZANT HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY DAFFODIL SHOW NEEDS YOU!
Are you buying your Spring bulbs for 2020? Why not buy a few extra Daffodils and enter our
Show on Saturday 21st March. We understand that we don’t all want to pick the flowers from
our gardens, so plant up a couple of pots with either all large or small yellow trumpet flowers,
white daffodils, mixed colours or double daffodils. You only need 3 of each to enter the classes.
Or, grow a separate display and pick and display them in a vase. Alternatively, put some in a
larger pot and enter the pot of daffodils class.
It only costs 10p per entry and you come along on the morning of the show with your entries to
arrange and come back later to see all the flowers in their Spring glory (and the scent when we
come back and open the door at 2 p.m. is wonderful).
The 21st of March is the Spring Equinox so let’s celebrate it with one of our most
glorious Spring flowers. There will be more news on the classes and an entry form
in a later issue of Lezant News.
Shirley Ough, Assistant Secretary, Lezant Horticultural Society.

LEZANT FLORAL ART AND GARDEN GROUP For our October meeting, we welcomed back to the parish Medical Herbalist Katrina Werren Bsc Hons MNIMH – ‘The Green Physic’. Katrina explained that her training was similar to that of a doctor of medicine and took 5 years of study at university to gain her degree. She now has a private practice in North Petherwin. We had a fascinating talk about how herbal medicine could be used alongside conventional medicine and how it could be personalised to address several issues. Katrina brought with her a selection of native hedgerow plants and various potions. We did our best to identify some of the seasonal plant samples handed round with varying degrees of success. These included valerian, elder, dandelion leaf, hawthorn and meadowsweet. She talked us through the medicinal uses and offered us some tasters to illustrate her talk. These included a meadowsweet tea (contains salicylic acid for pain relief, is also a diuretic and good for cystitis), a delicious spiced elder-berry drink (good for boosting immune system) and a valerian officinalis root extract (promotes relaxation and sleep and eases menstrual pain). We were also encouraged to add some leaves of dandelion to our diet to support liver and kidney health. We listened with rapt attention as I am sure each one of us felt they had some issue that might benefit from this kind of traditional natural medicine and the individual attention that a private consultation would bring. The supply of information leaflets were was popular with attendees. Reminder that there is no meeting in December. Our next meeting is our AGM at the Lezant Church Room on Wednesday January 15th at 7.30pm and release next year’s programme of events. Rosemary Buckler 01579 370525 Shirley Ough 01566 777340
WOMEN’S INSTITUTE
The speaker at the November meeting was Alan Endacott from Angel
Stained Glass. Alan explained that his work has included replacing and repairing stained glass windows from churches and other build-
ings as well as new commissions both private and public. He began his presentation with a brief history of stained glass which began
predominantly in a Christian context in early monasteries such as Jarrow in the 7th century. Initially stained glass was used in small
pieces of thick glass and dark colours, 'the jewels of heaven' as the
light coming through them was important. From the Norman Con-quest stained glass was used for pictorial purposes in grand windows
and to tell Bible stories to a mainly illiterate population. Unfortu-nately much stained glass was destroyed during the Reformation and again as a result of the
English Civil War. Stained glass became important again in the 18th and 19th centuries, particu-larly with the Gothic revival; however many of the medieval techniques had to be rediscovered.
Alan then went on to tell us how stained glass is made from the patterns through to incorpora-tion into windows. He demonstrated how to cut glass and the various tools used to paint it as
well as those needed for the lead. Finally Alan showed us examples of his work which were very
much admired.
There will be no meeting in December as members will be going to the Christmas Dinner at the
Arundell Arms. The next meeting will be on Wednesday January 8th at 2p.m in Lezant Church
Room when Malcolm and Sylvia Wright will be talking about Charles Causley's Life of Poetry.

of the scheme the taxi must be pre-booked through Launceston Taxis on 07340 813434. The taxi
driver will have a form that he will complete. You sign the form and pay the reduced rate to the
driver. Please note that the single fares quoted below are for guidance only, if you live outside one of
the villages the fare may differ slightly:
Lezant £8.00 Subsidy £4.00 You pay £4.00
Tregada £8.00 You pay £4.00
Trekenner £9.00 You pay £5.00

taxi whenever possible although it is appreciated that a taxi is not always available. Pre-booking the
day before can sometimes help. Remember, the taxi cannot be used on a regular basis for
commuting between home and work, nor as a school-run vehicle.
GYMKHANA REPORT
The wonderful weather on Sunday 27th October helped us all enjoy the gymkhana
at Trekenner. Despite only 9 horses and ponies competing, the day went well and
spectators and competitors alike all enjoyed a beautifully cooked barbecue and a
well-run tombola. We raised £235 for Lezant Church and a donation was given to
the Riding for the Disabled Carriage Driving Group. All the riders
won at least one lovely rosette: many thanks go to the Glebe Vet-
erinary Surgery of Lezant for kindly sponsoring them. Many help-
ers gave up watching the rugby and worked from morning to eve-
ning making the day such a success.
Thank you all. Ann Sheldrake (organiser)
