Canadian made education program that began over 30
years ago. In Richmond since 1986.
Designed for students whose first language is NOT French.
Program begins in Grade 6. All subjects are taught in
French except Band for this first year.
English Language Arts is reintroduced in Grade 7.
Students may continue in the French Immersion High
Schools (McRoberts or McMath High Schools).
What is Late French
Immersion (LFI)?

candidate ?

comfortable and enjoy working in groups
eager to learn another language
able to manage time and organize work
able to persevere when the work gets challenging

Emphasis is on obtaining French vocabulary.
Strategies such as games, repetition, group work,gesturing, word association etc. are used.
French/English dictionary is essential as well asverb books and erasers!
Music, books, videos, plays, concerts areadditional tools used to obtain the language.

How can parents support
their child?
Encouragement in their studies, ask specific questionsabout their homework.
Encourage them to continue to read in English.
Provide access to resources: French/English dictionary,verb book, internet, library.
Involve your child in the decision to enter the program.
Continue to help with curriculum content and seek helpwith the French.
Show positive attitude towards language and culture.

Pick up an Alternate Program Application Form
from your current school
Submit application to the Richmond School Board,
7811 Granville Avenue, 1st Floor, byMonday, February 4 at 4:00 p.m.
Draw date: Tuesday, February 12, 2013
Applicants will be informed of draw results by email
by February18, 2013

LFI will be offered at 3 schools in
Richmond if enrolment is sufficient:
Whiteside, Diefenbaker and McNeely
Transportation is the parents
responsibility
Acceptance into the school of choice is
on a lottery basis.
Things to Note:

Priority will be given to a child who has a sibling
in the immersion program in the same school
at the same time and there is space.
If there are more sibling applicants than spaces,
there will be a separate draw in that school.
Siblings of students enroled in the English
program are not given sibling priority in LFI.
