Sidewalk Proposed Along Landings Blvd. - Input Requested

The LMA is examining the possibility of installing a side-

walk along Landings Blvd. It has requested Landin input before proceeding to a decision.

Here is Don Smally’s report on the matter.

by Don Smally Chairman Roads and Drainage, LMA

In the planning of this year’s road resurfacing project, which includes a portion of Landings Boulevard, the concept of add-ing a sidewalk to the project occurred to me. This was dis-cussed at the LMA Board March meeting, and the Board asked that I go further into the subject.. Several alignments were con-sidered and a sketch was prepared for the Board’s consideration at the recent April meeting.

The Board felt that an important, and expensive, matter such as this needs more study and input from the residents of the Landings. It is now clear that there is no advantage to adding the sidewalk during the road repaving project.. This allows ade-quate time for a final decision to be made.

Pam Truitt, a resident of the Treehouses, and a consulting planner, and I worked together to establish an alignment that would be feasible. The proposed sidewalk could be built on the slope of the swale along side the pavement. There would be a grassed strip between the sidewalk and the edge of pavement. A crosswalk would be required where the walkway would change from one side of the road to the other.

This preliminary design would extend the existing walk at Heron Way along the East side of Landings Boulevard, across

LHA Drafting Rental Rules The Homeowners Association board is intent on developing

rules and regulations regarding how often and for what duration homeowners will be permitted to rent or lease their properties. It feels such rules are necessary to maintain the Landings qual-ity of life.

Preliminary drafts are heading to lawyers to ensure their legality. Specific provisions are still under discussion. The current board is clearly leaning toward a one year minimum rental term. Six months was suggested by one board member. The suggestion was quickly rescinded after a brief discussion.

It is clear the common desire of the board is to prevent “seasonal” rentals. When this was mentioned, it was stated as the goal. This would prevent seasonal residents from renting their homes when they go to their “other” home.

The board did say a situation where current owners sell their Landings homes, but rent from the new owners until they can move, deserves some discussion.

Homeowners with opinions on the potential rules can con-tact LHA board members or attend the LHA meetings. They are held the third Thursday each month at the LRC. A vote could come as early as the May meeting.

LMA April Board Meeting NOTE: An Eagle representative , as a general policy, at-tends both the LMA and LHA monthly board meetings to provide a first hand report of the activities of these two im-portant governing bodies. The actual minutes are then posted at www.LandingsEagle.com. We were unable to attend the April LMA meeting, however. Therefore we are publishing the preliminary minutes here (not yet reviewed by the Board) . They were written by Jim Faix, Acting Secretary and are edited by The Eagle to the extent of removing boiler plate language.

President’s Report: Patricia Decker requested to speak to the Board regarding Lake 7 in Landings South IV. There has been a flooding problem at one end of the lake. A copy of the Landings South (LS) IV letter is attached as Exhibit A). Bob Capo replied that the lake actually belongs to both LS IV and LS VII and not to LMA. The area that floods is a natural pre-serve and the association would need permission from SWFWMD (Southwest Florida Water Management District) and Sarasota County to modify’ the lake bank. Fritz Drybrough made a brief presentation to the Board re-questing permission to take on the maintenance of the lighting in the traffic islands as his responsibility. Mr. Drybrough would like to see improved maintenance on these areas A motion was made by Don Smally, seconded by Bob Capo to accept Fritz Drybrough’s offer and appoint him as the Main-tenance Chair for the Landings Lighting. The motion passed unanimously. Bob Capo also reported that the Developer of Philippi Land-ings would like to have a maintenance easement along the wall on Philippi Avenue since this will be the primary entrance to Philippi Landings.

A motion was made by Don Smally, seconded by Jerry McFadden, to approve the concept of granting the easement, subject to the Association’s review and approval of the ease-ment, and to authorize the president to sign such easement. The motion passed unanimously. The president also reported that after having a conversation with the accounting department regarding the 2004 budget, which is based on 702 owners, it was discovered that at the time the Homeowners Association was being developed, six lots were converted into four lots for the purpose of having larger homes on a larger lot. The actual lot count after that was 700. The 2005 budget will reflect an annual payment based on 700 and not 702. The president also reported that several owners had repaired the drainage in front of their homes. They claim this was the master association’s responsibility and are seeking reimburse-ment. A motion was made by Cliff Truitt, seconded by Don Smally to table indefinitely the discussion until one of the signers of the letter appears before the Board to help explain the situation and to answer questions. The motion passed unanimously. Landscaping Committee: Fred Stanyer reported that two more trees would be removed from the Eagle area Roads and Drainage Committee: Don Smally reported that the plans for the roads have not been received yet. He also reported that adding sidewalks to the project for this year’s paving pro-ject is not feasible at this time. He also reported that he had met with the combined Drainage Committee with LMA and LHA to discuss drainage issues. They had discussed the problems in the Landings and estab-lished procedures to handle them. (A copy of the LMA/LHA Drainage Problems Committee minutes are attached and made a part of these minutes. )They were previously published in The Eagle)

Media, during times of controversy and crisis, has a responsibility to play a role in rumor control. We certainly don’t believe such matters in our Landings community have the gravity of a national crisis, but we do believe The Eagle can, and does serve a similar role.

Case in point. It is clear the rumor mill can run amok here as well, based on number of conversa-tions, phone calls and cor-respondence relating to the LRC considering adding members from outside the Landings.

It started as suggestion from the tennis committee to increase tennis partici-pation. A discussion en-sued about permitting a limited number of Phillippi Landings residents mem-bership in the LRC. The developers have ex-pressed such an interest.

The board discussed it briefly and, realizing it would be controversial, suggested a committee to examine the possibility.

Within days, emotions were running high, espe-cially among LRC mem-bers who make heavy use of the courts and those who felt the board was act-ing without “due process.”

In fairness, the board also discussed whether they could act on the mat-ter or would a membership vote would be required. But no decision was made; in fact no recommendation was suggested to act one way or another.

Rumors were inflamed when a couple Landins anonymously queried an overzealous salesman at Phillippi Landings about tennis. He is quoted by one Landin as saying an LRC board member called it “a shoe in” and by an-other Landin as “it’s a sure

Thanks this month to: Barbara Pendrell, Kevin Richards, Dick Lutz, Don Smally, Marilyn Newman, Sheryn Dise, Dee Ricapito, Carl Zeisler, Lee Morgenlander, Robbie Salum, Jim Faix, Leslie McLean, Bob Fernander, Jules Chawkins, - Forgive us if we missed you—but please let us know.

The Editor: The latest issue of the Eagle mentions two LRC items that deserve comment. The fears of Jim Mangold and other LRC people that membership might be open to buyers in the new Phil-lippi condo development should be laid to rest. The club's documents prescribe two categories of members - residents of Landings South and residents of Landings North. The owner of a unit in Landings South is auto-matically a member of the club. A Landings North owner may choose to be-come a member. Any one else who wants to join will have to buy a home in The Landings. I join in applauding any member who has the guts to speak up when a rule of the club is being flagrantly vio-lated The rules protect the club's facilities and the safe enjoyment of them by the members and their guests. If there is no staff person present, any member has the right, and perhaps even the responsibility, to address the violation. A member who defends the violation should be criticized, not the one who tries to stop it. Bob Greenfield Landings Blvd. Editor

I have gotten many posi-tive responses about the correction to the Speed Bump at the North gate en-trance. It has conformed to a standard shopping center size bump to curb speeders on that straightaway. The

neighbors along that path or who walk their dogs or jog, etc. are pleased,

I have gotten many posi-tive responses about the STOP sign especially from those surrounding neighbors along Landings Blvd. It results in much slower care-ful passage through that circle. The neighbors appre-ciate the added light pro-vided by the trimming of the tree branches by the light posts on the corners of Landings Blvd. PLEASE more Assoc. Presidents take note to your trees blocking FPL street lamps, and trim!

The removal of the speed bump by the front gate has helped the truck noise level at the entrance and those neighbors appreciate that.

LMA continues to have their ear to the ground mak-ing improvements of the common areas for the best good of all Landins.

Dee Ricapito, LMA PR Chair Editor, Note that the homeowners

association is considering rental restrictions.

Personally, I am against restricting what people can do with their homes and creating a more intensive policing en-tity. But in the interest of property values, if the LHA proposes such rules, I sug-gest that the minimum term of rental be 1 year.

As a side note, thank you for such a fine commu-nity publication. The news, the maps and diagrams, the various and sundry tidbits,

thing.” The Eagle, after talking to involved par-ties, suspects a case of salesman’s hyperbola is involved here. The sales-man called the board member with an apology.

Lack of complete infor-mation certainly contrib-uted to the rumor mill. And that’s where The Eagle comes in.

Communities governed by one or more associa-tions, and a club facility governed by a volunteer board, operate at the will of their memberships. Sometimes that “will” is based on a majority, sometimes a super-majority. Either way it is at the behest of the mem-bership.

One goal of our paper is too make certain actions are taken in the sunshine even when Sunshine Rules don’t apply. That’s why we regularly attend LMA and LHA meetings. It is why we’ve been know to request boards delay action until The Eagle can publish perti-nent facts regarding pending actions, and can call for membership input.

Yes, we’ve seen actions we don’t agree with. Yes, we’ve worried “over the edge ideas” might be acted upon.

And, yes, we’ve called boards to task when we think more sunshine should be let in.

But, we have not seen an intentional maneuver to act behind the backs of the “electorate.”

If we did, it would get plenty of ink on these pages. We owe that to our readers, and our-selves. We live here too!

If you find any such ac-tion let us know. We’ll investigate.

Work o the Eagle’s area in March and April included taking out some of the pepper trees (considered a nuisance tree by the County and most environ-mentalists.)

Management Plan for Florida, Recom-mendations from the Brazilian Pepper Task Force, published in 1997, refers to the tree this way: “Brazilian pepper ( Schinus terebinthi-folius Raddi) is iden-tified as a species that is widespread in Florida, and poses a significant threat to Florida’s natural areas.”

Special attention was paid to those pepper trees at the base of several of the tall pine trees. Some pepper trees remain because of both the expense of removal and some residents living around the preserve like them because the block the view of homes across the property.

Landscape staff hired by the LMA used a new technique to make the cleanup more efficient. The new piece of hard-ware has a huge flat blade mower on the front capable of cutting at any angle from parallel to the ground to 90 de-grees vertical. It was still a multi-day project.

Observing the Eagle’s Area

Commentary by Irwin Starr

These three photos ought give pause to any Landin concerned with the Eagle’s area, commonly called the “preserve.”

Some of us who live near the area are pleased to see the peri-odic “cleanup” allowing our attractive trees to be seen at their best, as in the picture on the left.

The Eagle is, however, concerned the methods used for cleanup of the pepper trees and some of the invasive vines ap-pear to leave the roots in place allowing eventual, possibly rapid, re-growth. That will require another chop and remove operation.

We feel the reasons for not removing the remaining invasive pepper should be re-examined. They are undesirable growth.

The middle picture concerns us more. This is what a number of the pines in the area look like. At least four dead trees have already been removed in the last several months.

Only a city block away, on the Landings Lane cul-de-sac, the grove of pines in the right hand picture appear healthy, attrac-tive and prospering.

We need to determine why the appearance of the Eagle’s area is deteriorating and fix it.

Experts to whom The Eagle has spoken say a combination of disease, too much water, overgrowth of vines climbing the pines and pepper trees around them all contribute to the prob-lem.

A friendly reminder to all our seasonal residents: Before leav-ing for the North, please contact the gate and let us know the date you are leaving and approxi-mate date of return. You should also make sure we have your Northern address and telephone number in case of an emergency. If you plan on guests staying at your house while you are away, please let us know. This will ensure that they have no difficulties accessing the property. If you are among those heading north. have a safe and happy summer and we will see you in the fall! We’ve received a number of calls concerning nuisance wildlife or possibly rabid wildlife. Landings’ security personnel do not handle wildlife; it is up to the resident to call one of the animal services/trappers for assistance. Keep in mind that some of these services carry

a fee for which the resident is responsible. You may contact your association regarding wildlife removal as they may have guidelines of which we are not aware. It’s is our understanding LMA and other associations do not pay for these services.

A few issues ago we listed “Frequently Asked Questions” including answers to “What do I do if the garbage man hasn’t picked up my trash?” Call Waste Management — 924-1254. Landings security personnel do not handle this type of problem.

Our observation is the “standard schedule” is recycle truck comes first followed later by garbage and trash, usually before 11am but occasionally not until after 1pm, the trash man comes through. If it’s past 4pm and your trash is still by the curb, call Waste Management and they will send someone out to pick it up. Keep in mind, it handled waste for over 400 families here.

These rules would not apply to condo owners. Each condo association has their own approach to this issue.

The board discussed and approved several exterior changes to homes. It also continued to grapple with the thorny issue of enforcing standards, whether they be landscape condition or changes, loss and replacement of trees or unkempt roofs. One approach has been to turn to memos written by the developer early in the Landings history detailing acceptable and unaccept-able aspects of landscape proposals. For example, a 1985 Landings Plans Review Committee memo was issued by the developer to the owner builder of Lot 14. It denied their exist-ing plan and requested a re-submission for the following rea-sons: 1) foundation plantings needs on all sides of the building 2) show material being used to screen pool/HVAC equipment 3) use larger oak trees in front yard 4) submit color sample 5)fix roof line problem 6) change powder room window.

Eagle research suggests this must have been in reply to pre-liminary plans, as county tax records indicate the home was actually built in 1986.

The board has engaged the services of a consultant from Flor-ida Native Landscape to assist in determining the appropriate-ness of landscape plans.

The board will call on John Gary to assist in evaluating the condition of area trees based on his article in last month’s Ea-gle.

The board also voted to work with the LHA Drainage Com-mittee, based on the initial report from that committee.

Argus Management Rep to Change

Argus Management is the company hired by the LMA to exe-cute its policies and serve as the primary contact for all Landings residents for mat-ters under LMA jurisdiction. Argus also supplies management services to The Villas at Eagles Point and Carriage House I. Jim Faix has been their point man for a number of years. He recently announced he would be mov-ing to a part-time position with Argus, not permitting enough time to properly serve the Landings constituency.

The shift is the result of Faix joining his brother to open a division in Florida of his highly successful Knight Equipment Company of St. Louis. The company is the authorized distribu-

tor of car washing hardware. Replacing Faix in all three management responsibilities in the Landings will be Ken Evans. Evans comes to the position with 35 years of management experience. He holds a real estate license, is licensed by CORE in as-sisted living management as well as experi-ence in residential management. Effective immediately he is the person who should be called for LMA related mat-ters such as roads, public lighting, lake

problems and the like. His phone number is 927-6464.

LMA - President’s Report By Bob Capo

I have completed my second month as president of LMA and I am fortunate to have the support of an excellent Board of Directors with experience in the various areas of LMA responsibility. Those directors who chair committees are: Roads and Drainage, Don Smally; Landscaping, Fred Stanyer; Safety and Security, Ray Rakoff; Lakes, Jerry McFadden; and Public Relations, Dee Ricapito. Don also chairs a new joint committee with the Homeowners Asso-ciation on drainage. And , of course I can always depend on

good advice from Larry Spelman, our Vice-President and Ted Humphrey, our Treasurer. In addition we have welcomed our new board member, Cliff Truitt.

My wife Marcia and I have lived here 16 years and believe that the Landings is a treasure for its natural beauty and loca-tion. We live in Landings South VI and have watched Landings South VII being built followed by Eagles Point , the Villas at Eagles Point and the Cloisters. We are daily walkers, covering most of the area, and have observed the construction of many of the homes in Landings North. The last home is under construc-tion on Peregrine Point Drive which will bring the total housing units to 700, 218 homes and 482 condominium units.

Our past president informed me when I was elected that I would start receiving phone calls from members regarding vari-ous concerns. To date, I can report that the majority of callers have been very courteous and have explained their reasonable

concerns. I trust this will continue. It is important to remember that board members are volunteers and try their best to maintain a cordial relationship with all Association members. It is also important that when a member calls attention to a problem that requires Board action he or she should appear at a meeting to discuss the problem. During March, an Association member appeared at my door one day with no prior notice and presented me with a document defining a problem experienced by four residents. I was assured that someone would appear at the April meeting to discuss the problem. Subsequently no one appeared at the meeting and the Board tabled the document until a mem-ber appears to discuss the matter.

Having been the treasurer for the last two years, I became aware that every year there are more than a few residents who do not pay their assessments by the date required. Assessments are due January 1 and payable until January 15 without penalty. The Associations documents require assessments be paid on the due date whether or not a notice is received. We do send out notices every year and this year we initiated a new procedure of sending out a coupon that allowed the payments to be sent di-rectly to our bank for deposit rather than processing through our management company. This year, I received a number of calls from people who had been dunned for not paying on time and who said that they never received a notice of assessment. My standard reply is , in that case, it is the member’s responsibility to observe the January 1 due date and contact the management company prior to January 1 or at least before the 15th to verify the amount of the assessment and make the payment prior to the 15th. This year there were 44 members who had not paid by January 31 and 17 who still had not paid by February 29.

A major project this year will be the resurfacing of Landings Boulevard. More will be said about this later. We are also in the

Landings Flyboys Meeting by Don Smally

The April meeting was held, as usual on the first Wednesday at the Racquet Club. We had seven Land-ins and four guests. The Landins were Bob Fernander, J. J. Frey, Len Gumley, Ed Handelman, Joe Harts-horn, Don Smally and Fred Tie-mann. Repeat guests were Tom Halbert, Eric Pasquini and Harold Snowdon. Jack Olsen came as Tom Halbert’s guest. Jack Olsen was a attending the Uni-

versity of Illinois and enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1942. He was called to active duty in 1943. and began flight train-ing, ending up as a B 17 pilot in the 15th Air Force based in Italy. On his seventeenth mission on the 8th of July, 1944 his plane was hit by anti-aircraft fire over Vienna. He managed to get the damaged ship to Yugoslavia where the crew bailed out and on the ground were captured by the German Army. His wounds were treated and after interrogation he was sent to Stalag 3 then transferred to Stalag 4 The food was sparse and miserable but he survived. As the Russians approached from the East, the prisoners were marched 650 miles towards the Western Front.

In April of 1945 he and a few others escaped to the Brit-ish lines and were liberated. He recovered from his ordeals, first in England then in the States, and was discharged in Oc-tober 1945. As many of us did, he returned to college under

Jack’s experiences as a prisoner and the food situation re-minded a lot of us of Army food and its charms. In Viet Nam the food was about the same as in Korea and World War II. Ugh!

MORBID HUMOR: To those of you who are thinking of re-enlisting for the current activities in Iraq, Len Gumley advises that you will be classified 4I. You may remember what 4F was, but 4I means that you will be called when the enemy gets to 4th and I Street in Washington DC.

The next meeting of the Landings Flyboys will be on Wednesday, May 5 at noon. Bring a peacetime peanut butter and jelly sandwich and join us. We welcome anyone interested in flying past or present.

A motion was made by Don Smally, seconded by Cliff Truitt, to accept the committee’s recommendations to address the drainage issues within the Landings in cooperation with LHA. The motion passed unanimously. Public Relations Committee: Dee Ricapito reported that one owner would like to see email addresses included in the Landings Directory. She informed the owner that the Board decided that this information would not be included. She also reported that she met with Darby Buick regarding the early morning trash pick-up disturbing the Landings residents. Darby Buick will be working to solve this and possibly have this information published in The Eagle. The meeting was adjourned at 8:40 PM. The next meeting is scheduled for May 6

Kestral Park Way South Sewer Station Becomes Major, Fast Track Project The many trucks so evident at the corner of Kestral Park Way South and Kestral Park Drive

should be substantially reduced in the next three months. The $165,800 total renovation of the sewer pumping station at that location is

being put on the fast track by Sarasota County Environmental Services, the keeper of the county’s water and sewer facilities. Operations Supervisor Stan Epperly has filed the necessary requests to change the project status to emer-gency permitting a three month completion rather than the nine months the job would other-wise take. This station has been problematic for many years. When Sarasota County acquired the system from Florida Cities they were aware many of the Florida Cities installations, includ-ing this one, were not up to standards. According to Epperly the difficulties at this station have stemmed primarily from the fact the power source for the pump has been a single phase power source rather than a more substantial three phase source. The one phase power source combined with the heavy demand on the pumping station caused motors to short out and burn out with unusual frequency. Because of the configuration of the site it was necessary to bring in tall cranes to remove the pumps for replacement or repair. When the pump was down the large tanker trucks were necessary to remove the raw sewage from holding tanks to keep the system from backing up. Rainy season further exacerbates the problem. According to Epperly , while the sewer system is separate from the storm drainage system, leakage occurs from the storm sewer system

(Please see next page)

Landins should see less of the “honey trucks” used to empty retain-ing tanks when pumps have failed,

AD News

by Charlie Valentine, Sales Director

This column highlights news from The Eagle’s supporting clients. We will also include events and other information of interest to Landins.

May brings Mother’s Day, Prom Dates, Graduations Cinco de Mayo, Memorial Day and less traffic!

Having less traffic to contend with offers endless opportuni-ties for shopping, lunching, dining out, visiting our beaches and taking time to appreciate the multi-faceted community we are privileged to enjoy all year.

Our retail and restaurant clients all have gift certificates avail-able for Mother’s Day, birthdays and Graduations. Of Special note for Mother’s Day is a real rose dipped in gold available at The Diamond Vault, and unique Personal Photo Charms for Italian Charm Bracelets at Irresisitibles . When you need to get those presents and packages mailed anywhere, stop by the UPS Store in Coral Cove Mall. Steve and Tom can package and ship almost anything small or large.

On the Food Front, Casa Italia now has freshly prepared, home made Eastern Indian entrees and side dishes available on Thursdays for take out. Le Perigot is offering a special summer menu after Mother’s Day. Ferraris’ new, best chef is Marcello Aquino, son of Proprietor Vincenza. You might say it’s a Mom & Son operation.

In other news, the Oreck vacuum store will dry-clean your car’s floor mat for free while you wait. Kathleen Sutter, Land-ings Travel, received the prestigious Raddison Seven Seas Pro-

further burdening the pumping system. A temporary “fix” has been made. A “Quiet Zone” diesel

generator and pump is being utilized to keep sewage moving. While there is some noticeable noise when the pump is running, County officials assured The Eagle no expense was spared to find as quiet a temporary installation as possible. It runs only when pumping is necessary, currently about 2.3 hours out of 24, less than 10% of the time.

A portion of the costs will be borne by the developers of Phil-lippi Landings since their construction will impact the sewage system. There will be no direct costs to Landings residents beyond their normal sewer bills figured at the same rate as all Sarasota County residences.

Under the “emergency” order the following has or will occur over the next three months:

● Sewer pipes in the area will be water jet cleaned and examined internally with TV cameras for leaks, breakage and other problems. ● Three quotes will be sought for necessary hardware and

contractual installations. The response time for those bids will be cut to 30 days. ● The site will be reconfigured to permit standard Sara-

sota Utility trucks to back into the facility using on board cranes to install and service the pump. This will make the tall, rented cranes required for the current configuration unnecessary in the future. The pump is installed 26-28 feet deep. Rails will also be installed in the pump well making servicing easier. ● Three phase power will be installed by FPL. That alone

will account for about $70,000 of the renovation costs. ● Enclose installation with a shadow box style, 40 year

fence. The goal for completion is the beginning of the “rainy” sea-

son, June 1.

Punsters “Knead” Love (2) Two by Jules Chawkins

What is love and why is it sought? It’s certainly not something easily bought Does it start at birth and increase with mirth? Does it become bolder as we get older? A parent’s love is said to be strongest Can it be measured to be the longest? We love our children in every way And miss their love when they move away We love our pets ‘cause their love is so pure Their time span loss is most hard to endure What is love and what’s it all about? Its very loss leaves you much in doubt Can one replace this feeling sublime? Can one go to the computer and get it on line? I’m afraid it’s a feeling with which you’re overcome And it matters not whether you’re smart or dumb So cherish the time you are in love It most assuredly is a blessing Hug and kiss, enjoy the bliss, and don’t forget caressing If these thoughts somehow open your hearts To love, in the slightest way I will be pleased and much at ease And I will in fact have a LOVERLY day

New Tomb for Cheops?

No, that edifice seen on the new Phillippi Landings property for several weeks was used to test pilings for the new construction. A piling is driven and heavy weights, the concrete slabs seen in the picture, are placed on the single piling.

Engineers measure the movement of the piling before and after the weight is place.

Much of the work on the tests site was completed by John Burgstiner, Inc, owned by Landin Jerry McFadden.

LRC President’s Report By Bob Fernander

If you missed the LRC 20th Anniver-sary Party you missed the best party we have had at the LRC since I have been here (19 years). The food catered by Geckos was not only tasty but also plenti-ful. The theme, ‘The Roar-ing Twenties’, was appro-priate for the occasion and the costumes were very imaginative and attrac-tively worn, particularly b y t h e d a n c i n g

“flappers” (Jazzercizers) w ho entertained us with the Charleston. The DJ played familiar music we could dance to and the anniversary cake prepared by Albertson’s was very good and beautifully done. We all thank Judy Green, Barbara Pendrell, and Dee Ricapito for all the hard work in making this, our 20th anniversary a memorable occa-sion. Make plans to attend the Hawaiian Pool party on May 30.

Unfortunately there were insufficient board members to have the April board meeting. There was however, a large number of members responding to the representation by a Philippi Landings realtor that membership in the LRC was practically a done deal. As stated in my March article, this was and still is false. The realtor has been reprimanded by the developer and offered apologies to all affected for being over zealous. The general feeling of those present was that we do

not need any more tennis players at the cost of offering access to our facilities by people outside the landings and the LRC board should not consider this as a option in our quest to find more tennis players. Since the LRC Board was not in session, I will advise the board members to consider this request at our May board meeting. Many were satisfied with the status quo. They believe we do not need any more tennis players. I prom-

ised that I would send a formal letter to the developer, Bob Morris, informing him that he is to desist from using any reference to mem-bership in the Landing Racquet Club with any prospective resident in Philippi Landings. I am aware the monthly statement, quarterly since it covers three months, is completely unacceptable. It will be corrected in the May statement or we will look for a new billing service. If this fails we will do it in house. The

addition of a new line of tennis attire by Robbie, at very good prices I might add, emphasizes the importance of accurate and timely billing.

Many of our snowbirds have already left and others will be leaving soon. Please arrange with The Landings Eagle to have your copy mailed to you so you can keep up with what is going on here. Have a safe trip and we look forward to your return to Paradise.

LRC Welcomes New Asst Tennis Pro

Samantha (some call her Sam) Ardenfriend joins the LRC staff as Robbie Salum's Assistant Pro.

Despite her youth, 29 years, she brings 21 years of tennis experience and has been a teaching Pro for the last 10 years. She comes from a tennis family, re-cently relocated to Sarasota and was playing in tournaments at age 8. After receiving her BA in Psychology at Barry College on a tennis scholar-ship, Samantha taught tennis at Bagota Racquet Club, Bagota, NJ. After moves to Pembroke Pines, FL , Warren VT, Surfside, and Key Bis-

cayne, FL, she spent four years at Breckenridge Recreation Center in Colorado. But Florida lured her back so she could settle near her parents here in Sarasota.

While exploring opportunities here she taught part-time a the Bollettieri Tennis Academy.

When Robbie Salum was seeking an assistant, Samantha re-ceived high recommendations from the Colony Tennis Director.

She is certified by the USPTA and will be taking tests soon to obtain her rating.

Her experience includes teaching both the very young begin-ning player through advanced level players. She is especially proud of her ability to observe service style and offer sugges-tions for improvement.

Samantha Ardenfriend

She especially enjoys as-sisting players in developing the mechanical skills to meet their playing strategies.

Robbie is looking forward to her assistance in the sum-mer program for young peo-ple and helping meet several requests from female stu-dents for a distaff point of view on their playing.

Samantha’s background fits Salum’s long plans in-cluding development of a proposal for the Sarasota School Board to provide an after-school program for 13-18 year olds including ten-nis, swimming, nutrition and physical fitness.

Pets of the Month - Coco & Ruffles

Coco is discernable by her darker markings and no-nonsense person-ality, Ruffles, by her bright white coat and Miss Princess attitude.

They hold court at their Kestral Park Way North Carriage House gra-ciously sharing it with their extended family. Off season the whole gang moves north to Highland, North Carolina.

Both Shih-Tzus are ten years old but come from separate Sarasota breeders. Ruffles claims “west of the trail” lineage, and carries it with

pride. Her owners describe Coco as com-ing from “the other side of the tracks” and quite possibly not the purebred stock they thought they purchased, but loved never-theless. Coco does not favor wind noise, or nosey photographers! Ruffles is a lover, playing to the camera. The AKC described the breed as having “noble Chinese ancestry as a highly val-ued, prized companion and palace pet. The Shih Tzu is proud of bearing, has a distinc-tively arrogant carriage with head hell up and tail curved over the back.

The Mourning Dove This little guy (girl?) and two additional siblings, were born

and raised in the rafter near the pool door entrance to the Racquet Club.

It’s not the first time the spot has served as a dove maternity ward. The same thing occurred several years ago. But they took a few years off until this brave family moved in. Brave, because if you look carefully at the photo on the right you’ll spot what appears to be the fossilized remains of a baby gator.

Not to be “duped by decoy ducks” again (see The Eagle, No-vember 2003) we sent our crack research team to investigate.

Seems LRC staff planted the plastic gator several years ago to keep the birds away. Well, it worked until the parents of little fluff ball appeared this year.

This is probably a Mourning Dove. According to the Florida Ornithological Society the following types of doves are likely

to be found in this area. Mourning Dove Confirmed in this area and common in Fla. Eurasian Collared-Dove confirmed in this and other areas,

though not universally common throughout Florida Common Ground-Dove confirmed in this area Rock Dove confirmed in this area and others, though not

universally common throughout Florida European Turtle-Dove Confirmed in Tampa area, and two

other Florida locations White-winged Dove probable but not confirmed in this area.

Sarasota Senior Doubles Championship at LRC

King Van Norstrand, The “Bionic Man!”* King Van Nostrand reached two FINALS played in one

morning. The Sarasota Senior Doubles Championships were played at

The Landing Racquet Club April 8 through April 11. The best sixteen doubles teams in Florida competed in the

60+ division and 10 teams in the 70+ division. On Sunday morning at 9:00 am, King Van Nostrand from

Vero Beach and Rey Garrido, from Miami, defeated Chuck Devoe and Ken Sinclair, both from Naples, 3-6, 6-3, 10-5 in the 70+ division.

Ten minutes after that final King Van Nostrand with partner Dan Hazelton, also from Vero Beach, lost to Fred Drilling, from Bonita Springs and Rudy Her-nando, from Ft. Lauderdale, 6-0, 6-1. The winners played near per-fect tennis in every part of the game for the entire match. We

have witnessed great tennis matches on our Grandstand Court, but this was the best doubles performance we have ever seen. A capacity crowd of spectators were in awe..

*King Van Nostrand had double knee surgery several years ago.

The Homestead Exemption is an important benefit to Florida homeowners. The Sarasota County Property Appraiser is elected by the voters every 4 years. That office is responsible for determining the tax valua-tion of all real and personal property with the county. Those appraisals are the basis for the ad valorem tax, known as “property taxes,” the primary support for county government. Over 284,000 properties are appraised each year by this office. And valuations, therefore taxes, are certainly headed up, not down.

To take full advantage of the Homestead Exemption you must follow specific rules. For example, you must be in your resi-dence by December 30th of the year you homestead.

For details, stop by where you see my familiar blue sign.
