Notes and Anecdotes- Liberty is 1-11 all-time when playing against Longwood away from Lynchburg, Va. and is winless (0-10) against the Lancers inside Willett Hall. The Flames’ lone win in the facility occurred in its fi rst year of existence, as Liberty defeated Friendship, 78-75, in the Long-wood College Classic (Dec. 5, 1980). - Liberty’s contest against the Lancers’ will likely bring back fond memories for a member of head coach Dale Layer’s staff. Current Liberty assistant Coach Vince Walden was a three-year captain and four-year letterwinner at Longwood (1994-98) during the school’s NCAA Division II era. Walden was a part of the 1994-95 Lancers’ squad that appeared in the 1995 NCAA Division II Tournament. He is currently tied for 10th all-time in program history in career three-point fi eld goal percentage (.366, 89-of-243) After attempting to play on the professional circuit following his collegiate career, Walden later returned to Longwood in 2001 and completed his bachelor’s degree in social work.

Notes from the Last Meeting Between Liberty and Longwood- John Caleb Sanders led the Flames with 20 points, followed by Casey Roberts (12) and Tavares Speaks (10).

- Karl Ziegler posted a career-high 12 points for Longwood, while Lancers leading scorer Tristan Carey chipped in 10 tallies.

- The Flames fi nished with their third best shooting percentage of the season, hitting 28-of-53 shots (52.8 percent) from the fi eld. Longwood’s 47 points mark the fewest points allowed by Dale Layer’s squad this season. Liberty’s defense held the Lancers to 30.9 percent shooting (17-of-55). The Flames outscored the visitors in the paint (38-18), on turnovers (22-7) and off the bench (33-13).

- The Panthers shot 47.9 percent (23-of-48) from the fi eld, while Liberty ended the night on 39.2 percent shooting.

- Liberty falls to 9-18 overall and 5-8 in conference play. High Point improves to 15-10 on the year and 10-3 in Big South action, extending its current win streak to six games. The Panthers’ victory marks its third all-time and second straight in the Vines Center. High Point is also the fi rst Big South squad to reach 10 conference wins, this season.

Fast Break- Liberty has alternated wins and losses in its last eight games.

- Playing less than an hour from his hometown of Raleigh, N.C., Tavares Speaks posted a career-high 28 points in Liberty’s game against Campbell.

- Davon Marshall (67) needs six more three-pointers to tie Matt Hildebrand (73) for the fi fth most three-point fi eld goals by a Flame in a single season.

- John Caleb Sanders 25 points in the second half of Liberty’s game against Gardner-Webb is the most points by a Flame in a single half in over four years. Seth Curry scored 25 points in the second half of a 75-70 win on Dec. 22, 2008 over Northern Colorado in Las Vegas. Curry scored fi ve points in the fi rst half, as Liberty trailed 38-32 at halftime. In the second half, Curry erupted for 25 points, as the Flames outscored Northern Colorado 43-32 during the fi nal 20 minutes to secure the victory.

- Against Winthrop, Liberty fi nished with seven turnovers, its fewest of the season.

- Against Campbell (Jan. 29), the performances of Tavares Speaks, Davon Marshall and John Caleb Sanders marked the fi rst time the Flames have had three 20-point scorers in a single game in nearly four years. The last time three Liberty players accomplished the feat was on Feb. 14, 2009 at Charleston Southern. Seth Curry led the Flames with 28 points followed by Anthony Smith (24) and Kyle Ohman (23). Marshall is also the fi rst Liberty player to record back-to-back 20-point performances since Jesse Sanders did so during the 2010-11 season in wins over VMI (21, Jan. 15, 2011) and UNC Asheville (20, Jan. 20, 2011).

- Against Charleston Southern, Davon Marshall’s seven three-pointers were the most since Kyle Ohman knocked down seven in a 103-88 victory over VMI in the 2008 Big South Championship (March 4, 2008). Marshall is now one of fi ve players in school his-tory tied for second in single-game three-pointers made.

- Liberty’s double overtime tilt against High Point was its fi rst since Feb. 4, 2009, when the Flames fell at Gardner-Webb, 95-90. The contest also marked Liberty’s fi rst overtime game of the 2012-13 season and fi rst since Jan. 14, 2012 against Winthrop.

- In Liberty’s game against Coastal Carolina, Tomasz Gielo paced the Flames offense with a career-high 19 points.

- Defensively, the Flames held Coastal Carolina to 29.2 percent shooting (19-of-65), marking the fi rst time a Liberty opponent has fi nished under 30.0 percent from the fi eld since Campbell shot 29.0 percent (18-of-62) in the Flames’ 49-41 regular-season fi nale win on Feb. 25, 2012.

Coach’s Comments“Davon is very experienced and plays two different positions. He played on the third-best junior college team at the point and shooting guard positions. He was their leading scorer and is a big game guy. He’s got a great spirit about him. He is a guy that brings toughness, leadership and the ability to score the ball in many ways.”
