Introducing the New Teen Space at the Library

Upper Stacks level, before and after conversion The teens requested the colorful bean bag chairs

Above, Teen Librarian Flora Kim conducts the first teen program in the new space. At right, Flora with participants in the Teen Halloween Costume Contest.

Last fall, the Library Advisory Board approved the creation of a space for teens to gather for reading, fellowship and library programs. The new teen space occupies about half of the upper book stacks floor. After the blue metal shelves were removed, carpeting was in-stalled. We repurposed some old furniture - a conference table with chairs, lounge chairs, an atlas table that will hold board games - to achieve an economical, retro-chic look. The Advisory Board funded the conversion expenses, and the Friends of the Library provided new furnishings, including four bean bag chairs and a teen bulletin board. Middle School and High School students visit the space regularly.

In January, Teen Librarian Flora Kim started a Peer Tutoring program in which high school students meet weekly with children in first through fifth grades. This program has at-tracted teens from Bound Brook High School and neighboring districts, as well as area children. The teen volunteers spend at least ten hours tutoring to be eligible for commu-nity service hours. Corinne Cronheim and Wafa Saleh (at left, reading a Junie B. Jones book) were the first pair that Flora matched.

Corinne, a senior at Bound Brook High School and Wafa, a fourth grader at Lafayette School, take turns reading. Corinne asks questions to make sure Wafa is following the story. When Wafa did not like the ending of The Tale of Peter Rabbit, the pair wrote their own alternate ending!

Bound Brook Residents Suffer Devastating Personal Losses

April 13, 1777

The Battle of Bound Brook As the 236th anniversary of the Battle of Bound Brook nears (April 13), we might stop and think about the suffering and losses experienced by Bound Brook area residents of that trying time in our history. Their losses to the British Army on that fateful day are well docu-mented in four bound folio manuscript volumes at the New Jersey State Library in Trenton. The volumes contain the inventories of persons living in New Jersey whose property was plundered or destroyed (it does not matter by which side; these volumes document losses by the Continental Army, too), between 1776 and 1782, but mostly in 1776 and 1777. Some of the Bound Brook residents listed in the inventories who suffered damages by the British Army on April 13, 1777 are: Jacob Bond His losses: cows and clothing, totaling almost 50 pounds in value Michael Field His losses: 2 cows, wagon, harness, much bedding and dishes Richard Field His losses: a yoke of oxen, 2 horses, 3 hogs, 11 head of cattle Hendrick Fisher His losses: 22 head of cattle, 3 hogs, large sum of money Benjamin Harris His losses: 1 roan horse, 1 bay horse, 1 new wagon with harness for 2 horses, 1 cow, 2/3 of a hogshead of rum, 40 calves skins tanned and curried, 11 sides upper leather, 2 horse hides, 1 hog skin, 1 pair new saddle bags, besides many other articles of clothing and bedding. The total amount of his loss was 125 pounds, 1 shilling and 6 pence Rev. Israel Read, Bound Brook Presbyterian Church His losses: Many of his valuable books Elizabeth Van Deventer Her losses: Several head of cattle Tobias Van Norden His losses: A riding chair and harness, 2 cows, a calf and heifer, 4 blankets, 8 dollars worth of pig tail [tobacco] in small rolls, 8 silver tea spoons, 3 pair sheets, 2 double gross of buttons, window curtains, dishes, clothing, etc., to the value of 63 pounds, 13 shillings, 9 pence
