This booklet provides an introduction to the services and
facilities available in the FNU Libraries and the FNU
Electronic Library. This booklet is to help you feel at ease in
the library and enable you to use the FNU library services
more effectively. You may use this information as a
reference guide to library use during your time here at FNU.

3.0 Library Resources 3.1 Electronic library (e-library)
The electronic library of the university at http://www.fnu.ac.fj/library/index.php/library-
services/e-resources-and-online-databases-service provides abundant learning resources
including full-text electronic journals, electronic books, databases, electronic news,
reference resources, etc. The following Screenshot indicates the electronic information
resources available in the library. The E-Library contains electronic resources including
databases which cover more than 96,000 full-text journal titles and selected Internet
resources. Some databases need username and password for accessing. Thus, you may
contact circulation counter for receiving the same.

3.2 E-Books: There are more than 78,390 titles of full text electronic books in English are
available through e-brary.

3.3 Past year examination papers
Library started digitising all examination papers from 2010 to date and has completed
the work, providing the digitised copies electronically to students and staff through
Moodle. You may go to Moodle and search “past year exam papers” using the search
box available in the bottom. Then you will be directed to digitised exam paper
collection.
3.4 Print Collections
The print library collection contains approximately 129,708 books and 131 printed serials.
Materials are classified by the Dewy Decimal Classification Scheme in all libraries except
CMNH libraries (Library of Congress Classification Scheme for CMNH libraries) and
arranged on shelves by the call number found on the spine of the book.
3.4.1 Reference Collection
The Reference Collection consists of standard reference tools such as dictionaries,
directories, encyclopedias, indexes and abstracts, handbooks, atlases and Government
documents. Reference materials are indicated by a prefix REF to the call number. They
are for use in the Library only.

3.4.2 Printed Serials Collection
The Library currently subscribes to 131 printed titles. The latest issues of periodicals are
displayed on periodical racks while previous issues of the current year are kept inside the
boxes. Bound volumes of periodicals or back issues older than one year are located on
bookshelves separately from the current issues. All serials are indicated by a prefix “PER”
to the call number. They are for use in the Library only.
The Library also subscribes to 4 local newspapers such as Fiji Times, Fiji Sun, NAI LALAKAI,
and Shanti Dutt. Current issues of newspaper are put on the newspaper stands in the
reading area. Back issues are kept at Circulation Counter for one month.
3.4.3 General Collection
The General Collection contains around GEN titles including materials in English and
other languages. Materials from the General Collection can be checked out at the
Circulation Counter.
3.4.4 Close Reserve Collection
The Reserve Collection (prefix CR) is located nearby the circulation counter. It consists of
course materials, tutor-marked assignments, course set textbooks, printed examination
papers, supplementary materials provided by teaching staff, audio-visual materials, CD-
ROMs and microforms. Most of the reserve materials are available for 2-hour loans or
overnight loan from 8.00pm to next day 10.00pm. Requests for reserve materials can be
made at the Circulation Counter. Teaching Staff are welcome to place materials in the
Close Reserve Collection. The “Placing Materials in the Close Reserve Room” can be
done on written request to University Librarian.
3.4.5. Pacific Collection
Materials published in Pacific islands, materials authored by person/persons in pacific
islands and materials related to Pacific islands are kept in the Pacific Collection. Pacific
materials are indicated by a prefix PAC to the call number. They are for use in the Library
only.
4.0 Viewing Borrower Records
Library users can check their own loan records through the Internet. Users can also renew
their loan items through this record.
Login is required to access your borrower record.

5.0 Locating Library Materials
5.1 Where Library materials are located?
On the search result page, users can see the information about the Collection, Call
Number, Status and Availability of an item.

5.2 How Library materials are shelved?
Library materials are shelved according to the call number which appeared on the spine
of the materials. The call number on book spine matches the one found in the Library
Catalogue.
For example: Call number in Library Catalogue: 330 NOB 1975
Call number on spine: 330 NOB 1975
Here 330 is the classification number, NOB is the first three letters of the first author, 1975 is
the year of publication
5.3 Borrowing Privilege
Students and staff of the University can use the University ID cards to enter Library and
borrow Library materials. Borrower categories and borrowing privileges are listed in the
Following Table. University ID cards and Library tickets are not transferable.

5.4 Borrowing and Returning
Circulating materials are checked out and returned at the Circulation Counter. Users
must use their own University ID cards to check out Library materials. Circulation services
will stop 15 minutes before the Library closes.
5.5 Overdue and Losses
Borrowers are responsible for returning their loans on or before the due date. Late return
of Library materials is subject to an overdue fine and the amount of which is specified in
the Library Regulations. For lost or damaged items, borrowers are liable for the cost of
replacement plus other costs related to the shipping and processing etc as stipulated in
library policy.
Penalties for Unacceptable Behaviour or Unacceptable Use of Library Facilities
The following penalties are imposed by a library staff under authority of the University
Librarian on those who breach the rules of library use.
Misconducts Fine FJD ($)
Highlighting or marking the pages of
the books /magazines/ journals/
reading materials.
If with permanent ink: replacement cost = current market price
+ 60% markup fee from the current market price + processing
fees ($50).
If with pencil: a warning letter and $100 fine.
Theft or stealing of any kind of reading
material or equipment belongs to
Library.
Users found with reading material and/or equipment of
whatever type in their bag or possession without authority from
the Library shall be banned for 6 months from use of library
facilities, $200 fine for each material and given a final warning
letter from the Registrar of the university with immediate effect.
Reoffending cases shall be reported to the police for criminal
prosecutions.
In case of damage to library material
and equipment
Users shall be responsible for replacing the material and
equipment within 30 consecutive days of notice from library
with $50 processing fee. If the user fails to replace the material
and equipment within the stipulated time, current market price
+ 60% markup fee from the current market price + $50
processing fee shall be incurred.

5.6 Renewals
A maximum of one self-renewal may be made on any loans through the Internet via the
Electronic Library under their own borrower records. If users need more renewals, they
need to consult the Circulation counter.
Library materials cannot be renewed if:
You have overdue items; OR
You have outstanding fines; OR
Maximum renewal limit has been reached; OR
Items are being reserved by others users.
6.0 Internet Workstations
The Library has 323 Internet workstations located on different FNU libraries that offer
access to the Electronic Library and the Internet. All workstations are available to Library
users on a first-come-first served basis.
Wireless LAN is available in the Library for accessing the Internet with your own mobile
devices.
7.0 Library Notices

8.0 Information inquiries and consultancies
Professional librarians at relevant campus libraries provide assistance in finding
information and using Library resources, and advice about information search strategies.
You may simply approach them for any kind of library/information consultancy
8.1 Library Workshop
The Library provides users with education programmes and training workshops to assist
users in using the Library effectively. Library orientation programmes for new students and
staff are scheduled at the beginning of each semester. Training workshops on using
resources of different subject areas are held on request. Library will also coordinate with
colleges to customize training programmes related to the needs of their courses. You

may contact user education programme section at [email protected] for any kind of
library related user training programme.
9.0 Interlibrary Loan /Document Delivery Services
Interlibrary loan services are available to academic staff and students. The service
delivers books and journal articles not held by the Library. Only journal articles can be
obtained from both local and overseas sources for study, research and teaching
purpose but books can be obtained only from local sources. If an undergraduate
student need to receive a journal article/s through ILL, he/she should make the request
through an academic staff member of the college. For detailed information of the
services, please contact relevant campus librarian.
10.0 New Book Display
New books are put on display for one week at the New Book Display Areas. New books
will be returned to shelves for loan after the display.
11.0 Recommendations of Library Materials
Staff and students are welcome to recommend new library materials for purchase.
Publisher trade catalogues and new title announcements are distributed regularly to the
College/center via the campus librarian. Staffs are encouraged to select items from
these or any other sources. Resource Request From can be downloaded from the library
web [URL: http://www.fnu.ac.fj/library/index.php/quick-links/forms] or obtained from
campus librarian. All resource request forms should be endorsed by Dean/director of the
relevant college/center. Acceptance of recommendations is subject to relevance to the
University courses and availability of funds.
12.0 Access to other libraries
FNU library users have access to the libraries in University of the South Pacific and the
University of Fiji. This facility has been restricted only to general collections. However, the
users are allowed to do referencing but not allowed to borrow the materials. Users should
contact the relevant library with his/her valid ID card for receiving the service.
13. Other Library Services
13.1 Photocopy

Photocopiers are available in the Library to provide user with photocopying service. Users
are reminded that photocopying of materials should conform to the Copyright Law.

13.2 Printing
User can print documents through at circulation counter.
13.3 Remote Access to Electronic Library
All FNU students, faculty and support service staff can access to electronic library
resources remotely. Majority of these resources can be accessed when you are away
from campus, including while abroad.

When you are using a machine which is not on the University network (off campus) you
will be required to login to access Electronic Library resources.

Click “Digital Library Portal – E- Resources”
Go to “External Access Portal” in the E- Resources page
Then, you will be prompted to log in using your University IT account username and
password as below.

13.4 Citation Management
Publishing articles is very important in the academic world. So our library clientele are
busy collecting, organizing, and entering many bibliographic references into
manuscripts.
Recognizing the importance and the demand of our users, FNU library purchased
citation management software called RefWorks, which is an online research
management, writing and collaboration tool. This is designed to help researchers easily
gather, manage, store and share all types of information, as well as generate citations
and bibliographies. You may now simply access to RefWork through the following URL.

If you need training on how to use RefWork, please contact your campus librarian for a
special demonstration.
13.5 Plagiarism software
FNULS library subscribed to Turnitin.com only for CMNHS libraries. Turnitin is an online
plagiarism prevention tool widely used in in the scholarly world. It is a proprietary system
that allows instructors to submit student work for identification of unoriginal material. If
you need training on how to use Turnitin, please contact your campus librarian for a
special demonstration.
13.6 Group Study Rooms
Some Group Study Rooms are available in several libraries. This is an ideal place to
conduct collaborative study or group work inside the library environment. The Group
Study Rooms provide wireless facilities too for use by 4-10 students at the same time. Prior
bookings for use are required. User can book the Rooms in person at the Circulation
Counter of the Library.

14.0 Library opening hours
The opening hours will be determined by the University Librarian and will vary with the
demand for library use and staff availability. However, the usual opening hours of the
libraries are as follows. Current changes will be displayed at the entrance of the Library.

15.0 Library clearance
Library clearance is provided for all staffs and students that exit from the University
through a formal process. Staff and student should receive relevant clearance from
(Students from Academic Officer and Staff from HR) and submit it to library circulation
counter. If you have any dues owing to the library, you will be notified immediately. Then,
you need to settle the dues and get the Clarence from library.
