Summer slide refers to the learning loss that can

occur when children are out of the classroom

during summer break. If a child doesn’t read or

engage in learning activities during summer, the

loss of skills can be equivalent to as much as two

months of class time.

MAKERSPACESpace designed to give users the opportunity to create, build, and learn new projects and technologies. The library offered Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math (STEAM)programs.

The Friends of the Library purchased a PolyPrinter, a 3D Printer made locally in Midlothian.

The Friends also purchased STEAM kits for check-out.

The website was updated under the leadership of the Public Information Officer. The Electronic Services Librarian and the Youth Services Supervisor upgraded the webpage and continue to manage it.Strategic Goals: Community Focused Government

The Wylie Chamber meets at the library for the Business Card Exchange. Participation has averaged 25 per week. The library staff offers a program once a month and one-on-one business reference consultations to review resources.Strategic Goals: Community Focused Government

The Look at My Book (LAMB) program increased 107 percent in FY 17. We had to add an additional reception. Strategic Goals: Culture

Added a bilingual (Spanish/English) component to Family Storytime.Strategic Goals: Community Focused Government, Culture

Friends of the Library purchased 3D Printer and STEAM kits.The library has a partnership with UTD to create curriculum for STEAM kits. 3D Printer service for the public was launched in June. Strategic Goals: Culture, Community Focused Government

Full-Time Reference Assistant to Librarian• Collection Development in Juvenile Fiction, Juvenile Series

and Juvenile Graphic Novels and Juvenile Audio

• Plan and implement Tween Book Club

• Lead, plan and organize the Tween Summer Reading Club

Part-time Reference Assistant• Work desk to allow Librarians to work at the MakerSpace

and outreach

• Work Wednesday evenings and Saturdays



Open Wednesday Night, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

• All weekday nights will be uniform and close at 8 p.m.

• Additional night for computer classes

• Additional night to complete homework assignments

• Additional night for the community to use the meeting rooms



Additional hours for part-time staff for Wednesday hours

Reference Assistants and Library Technicians will work additional hours in the evenings.

Upgraded Reference Librarian will work on Wednesday night.

Clerk/Shelver will work the third shift on Wednesday evening.
