Pre-Course – Crash course in clinical reasoning: a teaching toolbox for you and your traineesRyan Kraemer (UAB), Starr Steinhilber (UAB), Yvonne Covin (UT San Antonio), Tracy Vettese (Emory)
This half-day session is great for faculty interested in developing their own clinical reasoning skills and the clinical reasoning skills of their trainees. We will begin with a crash course overview of the clinical reasoning process exploring dual-process theory and how we make diagnoses as physicians. We will then divide into groups to learn about how we can teach clinical reasoning skills in the inpatient or outpatient setting. We will finish by discussing conferences designed to teach clinical reasoning and what resources are available to facilitate the teaching of clinical reasoning. At the end of the session, participants will have a solid understanding of the clinical reasoning process and ideas for teaching clinical reasoning skills to their trainees.
