License Management Guide Overview

Licensing OverviewBeginning with version 5.0.5.0, the Infor HCM Workforce Management Business Edition and Enterprise Edition applications require an SLM-managed license to be activated past their respective trial periods - see Trial License on page 7.

The Solution License Manager (SLM)Infor Solution License Manager (SLM) is a central application that validates Workforce Management application licenses. The SLM validates requests from the Workforce management application, according to the information stored and validated with Infor. It is a server-based licensing solution composed of server and client components.

SLM Components

SLM ClientAll systems with Infor applications validated via SLM must have the SLM Client installed. The SLM Client is the interface layer between adopting applications and the SLM Server. The Workforce Management application requests a valid license through the SLM Client.

SLM ServerThe SLM Server is the central engine that handles license requests as well as administrative requests. In complex environments, up to four SLM Servers can be combined into an SLM Cluster. An SLM Cluster acts as the central mechanism for providing licenses to Infor applications.

SLM Cluster

An SLM Cluster is a group of one to four SLM Servers that act as one license manager. Having more than one SLM Server in an SLM Cluster is intended to handle fail-over situations and to support large quantities of license requests. If one SLM server stops, the other servers of the group can take over.

For detailed information on the SLM cluster, consult the following:

SLM MMC snap-inThis is the graphical user-interface, based on Microsoft Management Console (MMC), used to configure the license information used by the SLM Server/Cluster to validate license requests. The MMC snap-in allows you to manage both local and remote SLM Servers/Clusters. The MMC snap-in only runs on Microsoft Windows™.

Trial LicenseYou can install and use the Workforce Management application for a limited time period using a provided trial license. The time period varies based on the type of license:

Workforce Management - Business Edition: 30 days.Workforce Management - Enterprise Edition: 90 days.

The trial license will become inactive when the above time periods expire as well as when the following situations arise:

You receive a valid license from Infor. You connect to the SLM Server.

A trial license does not require the use of the SLM, effectively replacing the SLM for the trial period. Be sure to have a valid license before attempting to connect to the SLM Server.

As soon as a valid SLM license is obtained during your trial period, the trial license will be cancelled and from that moment on, the SLM Server will be required for all instances of Workforce Management.

The Trial License might not function for the following reasons:

Work Summary data from a previous installation exists on the system. The SLM server is NOT correctly configured

Configure NotificationsYou can set up notifications that warn the Workforce Management administrator of SLM communication errors and soon-to-expire licenses. These notifications are sent via Workforce Management Workmail, which can be configured to forward these notifications to specified e-mail addresses.

To configure Notifications, you need to specify the user name of the system administrator that will receive notifications in the WORKBRAIN_ADMIN registry parameter.

The WORKBRAIN_ADMIN (Enterprise Edition) and Administrator User (Business Edition) registry parameters can be accessed at the following locations in the Workforce Management application:

Business Edition: \System\Security\Application\Administrator UserEnterprise Edition: /system/WORKBRAIN_PARAMETERS/WORKBRAIN_ADMIN

If either registry parameter entry is left empty, the value defaults to the user “WORKBRAIN”.

It is recommended to associate a valid email address (i.e. distribution list) to this user so that the proper people can receive licensing-related notifications & error messages.

Register the SLM Client to Use the LicenseSLM ClientFor each SLM Client to be able to use a license, you must obtain the unique SlmID for each node where each SLM Client was installed.

To register the SLM Client to use a license:

1 From the command prompt run SlmId.exe located in the bin subfolder of the SLM install folder (e.g. C:\Program Files\SLM\bin). An example of the results is shown below:

Restart the Application ServerAfter the SLM is installed and configured, the Workforce Management application and the Application Server need to be re-started to point to the SLMHOME environment variable.

For more information, consult the following:

What to Expect After a Successful InstallA properly functioning SLM Server set-up will manage your license in the following ways:

The Workforce Management application will check the validity of the license at start-up and every 6 hours when the application is running. If an error occurs during a license confirmation check, the application will allow a pre-determined number of errors before it returns an invalid license. The maximum number of errors is:

Business Edition: 2 errors, which gives a period of 18 hours to repair the problem.Enterprise Edition: 8 errors, which gives a period of 54 hours to repair the problem.

Communication errors will be logged to the application log and all errors will be prefixed with "License error:" which can be filtered for by automated log checkers.Communication errors will also cause a workmail notification to be sent to the admin user each time they occur.License expiry workmail notifications will be sent at 30, 15, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 days prior to the license expiring. The application will not start if it cannot obtain a valid license at startup.

The available license information will be logged in the application log at startup. It may also be checked on the System Information page via:

System Deployment and Performance

System Deployment

High Availability and Clustering SupportDue to the flexible nature of the License Management components, we recommend that you adequately plan on how best to deploy the SLM Server within your Workforce Management system architecture. Be sure to pay special consideration to the clustering and high-availability support features of the SLM Server.

Additional Hardware? There is no additional hardware required to run the license management components within an existing Workforce Management deployment. If you would like add hardware to your existing Workforce Management deployment, contact Infor Professional Services to get help in determining the appropriate configuration to fit your needs.

PerformanceWorkforce Management uses the server-based licensing model of Infor's Solution License Manager (SLM). This means that all application instances and Job Schedulers running on a given host only need a single license key. The Workforce Management application retrieves the Product ID attached to the license key on the SLM Server to determine which components are included in the license. The Product ID is 8601 for Enterprise Edition and 8600 for Business Edition. The license key is validated when the application starts up and every 6 hours thereafter. These SLM Server calls have no impact on performance.

Core tasks that run in the background, such as the Employee Import (HR Refresh), Clock Processing, Timesheet Calculations, and Holiday Assignment, have no dependency on licensing. Workforce Management components are dependent on licensing and so they are associated to a specific Product ID within a configuration file hidden from the end user. The contents of the configuration file are cached into memory for optimal performance. The license checks involved are extremely lightweight and have no impact on system performance as has been confirmed in our targeted tests. Also, any

Important! The SLM Client component must reside on each host where there exists a Job Scheduler or a WFM Application (i.e. application server). The Job Scheduler host is required to have the SLM Client installed as a safety precaution in case any customizations inadvertently trigger a license check via an API call.

Troubleshooting

License ErrorsIf occasional license errors, such as a License server not running, or a 404 page not found, are displayed when accessing the application on login, ensure that all nodes in the cluster have a valid license available. The application startup log should be consulted to ensure that a node has a valid license.

Trial License Not WorkingThe Trial License might not function for the following reasons:

Work Summary data from a previous installation exists on the system. The SLM server is NOT correctly configured.

MMC Snap-in not RespondingIn cases where the SLM had to be re-installed using the Installer, you might need to re-register the MMC Snap-in. In Windows, you can use the Regsvr32 executable file. Simply run this command from the command prompt:Regsvr32 SlmSnapin.dll

If the regsvr32 SlmSnapin.dll command fails displaying the following error:

LoadLibrary (SlmSnapin.dll) failed - this application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem

follow these steps:

1 Run the vcredist_x86.exe file found in the root of the SLM installation folder. This executable installs Microsoft runtime DLL’s which are required for all executables and DLL’s built with Microsoft Visual Studio 2005.

2 Once the installation is complete, run the regsvr32 SlmSnapin.dll to register the snap-in.

License Expiration Log FilesIt is recommended that you regularly check the log files at the SLM Server side for expiring product IDs as well as for product IDs that run out of licenses.

The SLM Server checks each day for product IDs for which the license is due to expire within 30 days. If so, a warning message is written to the log.

On i5/OS and UNIX, the logs are stored in $SLMHOME/log.In Windows, the logs are also stored in $SLMHOME/log, plus you can access the logging information via the Windows Event Viewer.

License Manager User Guide Appendix A: Frequently Asked Questions

LicensingWhy did Infor implement licensing for Workforce Management? For two main reasons:

1 To effectively implement Infor HCM Workforce Management Business Edition, which is a scaled-down version of our existing Enterprise Edition product.

2 To enforce entitlement and ensure that only our customers and partners are using our software.

Does licensing restrict the number of users of the application and/or the number of employees stored in the application? No. Licensing does not restrict the number of users of the application nor does it limit the employees stored in the application.

Will customers be limited in the number of servers that they are able to use to run the Workforce Management software? No. Although activation keys have a number of allowable servers associated with them, customers will not be limited by the number of servers that they can request for activation. It is recommended that when requesting an activation key, an adequate number of servers is requested. New activation keys can always be requested to increase the number of licensed servers.

What happens when a license expires during runtime? If a license becomes invalid during runtime, the application will cease to function though clock swipes will continue to be recorded.

SLM InstallationThe following Q and A’s apply to the Installation of the SLM License Manger

What documentation is available regarding License Management? The Infor Solution License Manager extractable zip file Infor_Solution_License_Manager 7.1.exe located in the top-level of the Workforce Management ISO image (Workforce_Management_BE_5_0_5_0.iso for Business Edition, or Workforce_Management_EE_5_0_5_0.iso for Enterprise Edition) contains the following guides in the documentation folder:

License Manager User Guide Appendix A: Frequently Asked Questions

Where should the SLM Server be installed? The SLM server can be installed on any supported platform. It resides on a server dedicated for SLM or can co-exist on a server that hosts other applications. However, the SLM client must reside on each server that hosts an application server or a job scheduler.

Can the SLM Server, SLM Client and the Workforce Management application be installed on a single machine?Yes. This is the expected configuration for people running the Workforce Management application on a laptop for demonstration purposes.

Can the SLM server or client be installed on a laptop?Yes, as long as the laptop meets the pre-requisites for SLM.

Do I have to install an SLM server and client with all installations? The SLM Server needs to be installed if an existing SLM server is not already available. However, an SLM client is mandatory for each machine that hosts an application server or job scheduler. Furthermore, in a clustered environment, each server must have the SLM client installed.

How does licensing differ in non-clustered versus a clustered environment? There is no difference between how licensing works in a clustered or non-clustered (stand-alone) environment. The only requirement is that the each logical server must have an SLM client installed.

What is the recommended method for installing the SLM Server and client on a Unix environment: Installer or manual? Both methods are supported. However, using the Installer is recommended.

What is the difference between SLM Admin and SLM server? The SLM Admin is the user interface used for managing the SLM Server. The SLM Admin is also referred to as the SLM MMC Snap-in.

If other Infor products are already using an SLM Server, should a dedicated SLM Server be installed if the Workforce Management application is being installed?Yes. If more than one Infor application is licensed based on SLM, a dedicated SLM Server should be installed for Workforce Management.

License Manager User Guide Appendix A: Frequently Asked Questions

SLM Configuration and AdministrationThe following Q and A’s apply to the configuration and administration of the SLM License Manger.

What is the license key generation/distribution process? The process involves updating the license.xml and submitting this file to www.infor365.com so a temporary activation key can be provided by Infor. A permanent or longer term activation key (depending on the contract) is sent out by Infor after the provided information is validated. For more information, see “Obtain an activation key” in the Infor Solution License Manager: Installation and Configuration Guide.

How can I find my Customer Code? The customer code is provided by Infor with the permanent activation key.

Where can I find additional troubleshooting tips? Both the Infor Solution License Manager: Installation and Configuration Guide (Appendix B) and the Administrator's Guide (Appendix C) contain additional troubleshooting and known issue information.

What does the following error mean: "Failure initializing local licensing client library" when starting up the MMC Snap-in?This error occurs when you attempt to start the MMC Snap-in while the SLM Server is down.

What information is contained in the SLM log?The SLM log will warn if the SLM Server is started without having a valid activation key, provide reasons for failing license requests, and warn about products nearing their license expiration date.

When adding a new licensed server/instance (SLM Client) to the SLM Server, how can I find the server id?The server id is specific to each server and its configuration. It can be obtained by running the command slmid from within the <SLM_HOME>/BIN directory where the SLM Client was installed.

Running slmid on different logical partition (LPAR) hosts produces the same result? The server id is associated with the physical hardware of the machine and so it is possible that the same ID is generated on different LPAR’s on the same machine. In this case, you would only need to register one instance of the ID in the SLM Server to grant licenses to all LPAR’s on the machine. If you require different SLM Servers to manage LPAR’s, you need to configure individual SLM Server clusters (each running on a different ports) to handle the specific LPAR’s.

License Manager User Guide Appendix A: Frequently Asked Questions

When the license data is saved using the MMC Snap-in, where is the information stored? The data is saved to various XML files under <SLM_HOME>/ETC and <SLM_HOME>/LICENSE located on the SLM Server machine.

What type of information is stored in <SLM_HOME>\license\1\ <port#>\license.xml on the SLM Server machine? The file license.xml contains license information about the SLM Server, such as the number of available licenses, start date, end date, etc…. In the MMC Snap-in, this information is reflected in each respective task under "License Data".

Using the MMC Snap-in, how do I see the list of licensed Workforce Management products? To see the entire list of licensed product, expand the Server Licenses category.

The SLM Client was setup as part of the Installation Wizard. Is there any additional configuration that needs to be done?Running the command slmconfig -c on the SLM Client machine detects all available SLM Servers. Select the appropriate SLM Server to register the SLM Client with the chosen SLM Server. This is done by updating the servers.xml file located at <SLM_HOME>/ETC. For more information, see the “SLM Client” section of “Chapter 4: SLM Concept” of the Infor Solution License Manager: Installation and Configuration Guide.

When using the MMC Snap-in after the SLM server is first installed, why are there products already listed under the Unassigned Product entry? If the SLM Cluster receives requests for product-id’s which are not registered, it will store these product-id’s as Unassigned Products. This is an indication for a customer that there are Infor products installed for which licensing is not available or only partially available. This has no functional impact on how Workforce Management uses the SLM server.

Which license types are supported for Workforce Management: Concurrent User, Named User, Server License, Instance License?Workforce Management supports server-based licenses only.

What changes to Workforce Management require a new activation key?A new activation key is required when adding a new product, changing the number of licenses, or renewing your license. A new activation key is not required when changing the users, servers, or instances.

What happens if there is an error when Workforce Management attempts to validate a license with one of the SLM Servers? If communication with one of the SLM Servers results in an error, Workforce Management automatically connects to another SLM Server in the cluster, system operation continues normally, and a notification of the error is sent to the administrator. If communication with all available SLM Servers result in errors, notifications are sent to the administrator, and system operation continues until the grace periods for each license type (12 hours for Business Edition and 54 hours for Enterprise Edition) elapse.

Is the SLM option High Availability Support (HAS) necessary? The SLM Server has an option called High Availability Support (HAS) which automatically redistributes valid licenses when one of the SLM Servers goes offline. For Workforce Management this is not necessary as long as each SLM Server instance has sufficient licenses granted to support all the Workforce Management servers. For more information, consult the Cluster sections of Chapter 1: Installation and Chapter 4: SLM Concept of the Infor Solution License Manager: Installation and Configuration Guide.

How is the machine's SLM id determined? Do you have to re-run the SlmID program after the SLM Server is re-configured?The activation key of the license file is bound to the hardware. Therefore, if a change occurs in the hardware, the SLM server can refuse the former license file and stop running immediately. To check if you require a new activation code, run the SlmID program and compare the ID number the program returns with the ID number specified in the host part of the common record of the license file.

Using Workforce Management with SLMThe following Q and A’s apply to the interaction between the Workforce Management application and the SLM License Manger.

What are the product codes for Workforce Management products? The product code for Business Edition is 8600. The product code for Enterprise Edition is 8601.

Can licenses for both Business Edition and Enterprise Edition be installed on the same SLM server? An SLM Server can maintain concurrent licenses for Business Edition and Enterprise Edition. However, only one of the editions (Enterprise or Business) of the Workforce Management application can be installed on any one server.

How many SLM Clients can a single SLM Server manage? The SLM Server has been bench marked to be able to handle 750 requests per second. Workforce Management requests only once every 6 hours. Therefore, there is virtually no

limit to the number of SLM Clients an SLM server can handle within Workforce Management.

Can the same activation key be used for both production and non-production environments? The activation key is tied to the license and the machines belonging to the SLM Cluster on which the license is utilized. The activation key is irrelevant to the environment you are running. If your production and non-production-environments are part of the same cluster, then the same activation key can be used for both.

How many SLM Servers are required in an environment where there are instances for Quality Assurance (QA), Unit Acceptance Testing (UAT), and Production? One SLM Server will be able to handle the requests from all instances. However, for practical reasons it is recommended that the Production instance use dedicated SLM Servers.

How does an upgrade of one of Quality Assurance (QA), Unit Acceptance Testing (UAT), or Production Workforce management instance affect the other instances? There is no impact on the other instances if one is upgraded to a higher version of the Workforce Management application.

What is the recommended SLM setup for a complex environment that uses multiple JVM’s on multiple machines? For complex scenarios, you should use SLM clustering. For more information, consult the Cluster sections in Chapter 1: Installation and Chapter 4: SLM Concept of the Infor Solution License Manager: Installation and Configuration Guide.

Can an Enterprise Edition and Business Edition instances run on the same machine or host? No. Beginning with Workforce Management 5.0.5.0, each machine or host can only run one edition of Workforce Management. However, multiple instances of the same Workforce Management edition can be run on the same machine or host.

Is the license validated upon Workforce Management application start-up or with every Workforce Management request?Licenses are checked upon Workforce Management application start-up and every 6 hours after. Since license checks are infrequent, their impact to the performance of the Workforce Management application is negligible.

Trial LicenseThe following Q and A’s apply to the Workforce Management trial license and the SLM License Manger.

Is the trial license available to clients upgrading from a previous Workforce Management fixpack? Trial licenses are not available for upgrade clients. Existing customers must have the SLM Server and Client already configured before deploying Workforce Management 5.0.5.0 or higher; otherwise, the Workforce Management application will refuse login attempts after it is upgraded.
