Lichens are a symbiosis between a fungus and analgae. The algae produce sugars from sun, water andcarbon dioxide during photosynthesis. The fungus onthe other side collects other nutrients and water andfeeds on the sugars produced by the algae (Honegger,1991).

During the biological activity of the lichens theorganisms are swelling, shrinking and taking upnutrients which breaks down rock. In the NationalPark Pan de Azúcar lichens are activated by fog, dewand high relative air humidity. It is distinguishedbetween lichens growing on soil (terricolous), onplants (epiphytic) and on rocks (saxicolous).
