Choosing a College

What factors are most important to you in a college?

Programs? Cost? Location? Size?

Not sure which college is the best fit for you? Use these tools to find a good fit.

● Big Future

● College Navigator

Research the College and Visit!

Page 11: Life After High School Keller High School-Parent Version

Carefully Consider the Typical Costs of Each College on Your List

● “Sticker Price” versus Actual Price● College Navigator (https://nces.ed.gov/collegenavigator/) provides a “net

price” for almost all colleges which shows the true, typical prices students pay for a college after grants and scholarships are factored in

● All colleges are required to have a “net price calculator” that allows one to estimate the cost of attendance at their college

● Ultimately, though, the only way to know how much college costs is to apply for a college (and carefully apply for all relevant scholarships from that college)

TRANSCRIPTS ● Colleges will need a copy of a student’s transcript to admit the student.

Transcripts can be requested on the KISD website:○ https://kellertx.scriborder.com/applicationCurrent

● After high school graduation, students will need to submit a final (official) transcript to the college where they will attend. Students should begin requesting final transcripts in mid-May

Page 28: Life After High School Keller High School-Parent Version

A Few Words about GPA/Rank ● We only rank top 10% which forces colleges to look at your grades

themselves● In Texas, there is no standardized GPA scale (as often is the case in other

states)● Each district is allowed to choose its own GPA scale● Typically, colleges recalculate GPA using their own formulas● Systems like Common App and SRAR Reports (Self-Reported Academic

Record) allow colleges to make an “apples to apples” comparison among students from different districts with different GPA systems

● Colleges typically evaluate GPA’s by looking at two main factors:○ Unweighted GPA (their own calculation/GPA scale)○ Difficulty level of courses (How many Honors, AP, Dual Credit, etc.)

Page 29: Life After High School Keller High School-Parent Version

Military

Page 30: Life After High School Keller High School-Parent Version

Military● Talk to a recruiter for the branches of the military for which you are

interested● Do not sign paperwork without discussing with your parents● Students can earn college credit while in the military● The military can pay for some or all of your college tuition● College ROTC programs can help you prepare for the military

while attending college and can open up additional scholarship opportunities
