Landowners Initiative for F o r e s t r y Educ at i on

United States Department of Agriculture

The mission of the Cooperative Extension Program at Fort Valley State University is to provide practical, problem-oriented learning opportunities for those people who do not or cannot participate in formal classroom instruction offered on the campus. The program provides educational services through its staff of program leaders, specialists, county agents, county extension program assistants and support personnel. One of four primary extension areas is agriculture and natural resources.

To ensure that the needs of the small, limited resource, minority farmers and landowners are addressed, the FVSU Cooperative Extension Program created the Landowner Initiative for Forestry Education (LIFE). This program focuses on the overall goal of increasing outreach, awareness and

technical assistance to minority and limited resource farmers/landowners in the areas of sustainable natural resource practices and effective estate planning including the incorporation of computer technology.

The objectives of the program are to:

• Identify minority and limited resource forest landowners and farmers in Georgia and create GIS database of minority and limited resource landowners.

• Increase communications and outreach to limited resource farmers and landowners on current forest management and protection strategies.

•Provide training, technical assistance and education to limited resource farmers and landowners on forest protection & management with an emphasis place on estate planning.
