Michigan Cancer Healthlink

Karmanos Cancer Institute Office of Health Equity and Community Engagement

What are CANCER ACTION COUNCILS?

Cancer Actions Councils (CACs) are groups made up of community members and representatives from communitybased

organizations who apply their knowledge about local cancer issues to improving the lives of cancer patients, survivors, and

care givers in their communities. The council members represent the various ethnic and social groups living in their neigh-

borhoods. Cancer Action Council members are actively engaged in their communities and are working to create healthier

neighborhoods.

We currently have 10 CACs’ and are expanding to Northern Michigan, the Thumb and the Mount Pleasant area. CAC mem-

bers will be identified and recruiting the spring of 2021. Cancer action Council meeting will begin in June 2021.

What will the CANCER ACTION COUNCILS do?

Learn more about the ways in which cancer affects Michigan communities

Participate in conversations with cancer researchers about research that can benefit Michigan

Gain skills in partnering with cancer researchers to develop and fund projects and programs

Address cancer related health needs in their communities

Set priorities for future cancer care research and funding

Improve access to cancer prevention and treatment

Who can serve on a CANCER ACTION COUNCIL?

There are two types of members:

1) Core members are expected to be fully involved in all meetings and activities over a 12month period. This type of

member is eligible for a partner stipend.

2) Associate members are willing and interested in playing a role in setting cancer care and research priorities in their

community but may not be able to attend all activities and meetings.

What are Core Membership requirements?

Share your expertise about cancer and your community, and have an interest in creating healthy communities.

Attend approximately 12 inperson meetings over a 12 month period. Each meeting will be about 2 hours in length.

Read or listen to material for discussions at meetings and research capacity trainings. Meeting preparation, readings,

etc. will take approximately 2 hours per month.

What are Associate Membership requirements?

Share your expertise about cancer and your community, and have an interest in creating healthy communities.

Participate in the research capacity training community graduation celebration (first year)

Participate in a group meeting of all council members (second year)

Are CANCER ACTION COUNCIL members compensated for their time and participation?

Yes, all Core CAC members will receive a stipend of $50 per meeting.

Where are the CANCER ACTION COUNCILS located?

We have several different locations for our Cancer Action Councils, and are looking to increase our capacity to include

Northern Michigan, the Thumb and the Mount Pleasant area.

How do I apply to join a CANCER ACTION COUNCIL?

chicken skin. As far astrans fatsare concerned, they are primarily found in packaged and prepared

foods like deli meats and frozen dinners, for example. Studies show that consuming too many saturated

or trans fats can raise not only blood pressure but also your cholesterol.

8. ALCOHOL: While not a food per se, alcohol should be avoided if you have hypertension. In fact,

several studies show that consuming too much alcohol can even diminish the effectiveness of medica-

tions aimed at treating high blood pressure.

9. CAFFEINE: Like alcohol, caffeinated beverageslike coffee and sodas can also lead to hypertension.

Because caffeine is a central nervous stimulant, it causes blood vessels to constrict, which, in turn, in-

creases blood pressure.

10. SUGAR: Similar to alcohol, consuming excessive amounts of sugar can lead to not only weight gain

but also hypertension. Whether you have hypertension or not, it is still a good idea to limit your overall

sugar intake.

11. CANNED SOUPS: Despite being delicious and convenient, canned soups should be avoided if you

have hypertension due to their high sodium content. The same can be said canned and packaged broths

and stocks as well. A full serving of canned or packaged soup, broth, or stock can contain as much as

2,000 mg of sodium.

12. CANNED OR BOTTLED TOMATO PRODUCTS: Canned or bottled tomato products like

ketchup and tomato sauce, for example, can pack almost as much sodium as canned soups. That said, if

you have hypertension, it would be a good idea to eschew these foods from your diet as well.

13. SALT: Considering that most foods already contain a fair bit of sodium, it would be a good idea to

avoid tablesaltwhenever possible. In fact, adults should make it a point to consume no more than

1,500 mg of salt per day, according to the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention).

14. PASTRIES: Those with hypertension should limit the number of pastries they consume as they

often contain an exorbitant amount of sugar. The sugar in these foods not only adds to one’s waistline

but also contributes to hypertension.

15. PEANUT BUTTER SPREAD: If you have hypertension, peanut butter is another food that you

should consider avoiding as it contains a considerable amount of saturated fats. These are the fats

which can clog arteries and also lead to hypertension.

A !, foods that are high in fat and sodium should be avoided if you have hypertension. The best

way to manage hypertension and ultimately get it under control is by consuming a healthy diet. Some of

the most commonly recommended foods for those with hypertension include

 Fiberrich foods

 Magnesiumrich foods

 Potassiumrich foods

Whole grains

Additionally, you can always substitute some of your favorite sodiumrich foods with lowsodium op-

tions if they are available. Fortunately, most food manufacturers recognize that hypertension is a prob-

lem for many Americans. Therefore, they now offer lowsodium alternatives for many of their top

brands. Source: Power of Positivity, August 2019
