1. How would you explain this story to your co-worker/neighbor? What are the main points of this passage? What are some practical ways to apply these truths to our lives today?

2. What is the significance of Jacob admitting his actual name?

3. What does the name Jacob mean? What is the significance having his name changed to Israel? What does the name Israel mean?

4. What lesson(s) should we take away for our prayer life from Jacob wrestling with the “man.” (Luke 11:5-13, Luke 18:1-8)

5. The name change may well represent the transformation of character that had begun in Jacob. But, the wound remained a constant reminder of Jacob’s need for God. A Jacob wholly dependent on God can become an Israel. What can we become if we let each wound draw us closer to the Lord and make us more dependent on Him?

6. How am I like Jacob here? What experiences of mine are parallel? When do I have similar feelings, face similar situations? How can I profit from or be guided by what is recorded?

7. What are your takeaways from this lesson/sermon? What points of application from the principles in this chapter will you apply to your life this week?
