Teacher For A DayBy Lisa Lundskow, Community Manager
Early this year, I received
a call from Ms. Vassily,
a third grade teacher at
Estrella Mountain Elementary
School here in Estrella. Ms.
Vassily and Mrs. Johns wanted
to know if I could come to do a
presentation for the third grade
on Community Governance.
Now, I don’t know about any of
you, but I was really thinking that
this was way out of the league
of eight-year-old children until
Ms. Vassily said that they were studying the different branches
of government and wanted to compare that to our community
structure.
So, Lifestyle Director Holly Aguilar and I jumped into action and
started to create our presentation for the third grade class. We
compared our Boards and voting authority in the community to the
different governmental agencies and included information about the
CC&Rs and contractual agreement entered into when their parents
purchased homes here.
When talking about the rules, we mentioned the rule about bringing
in trash cans and that they had to be in the garage or behind the
fence. One child jumped up and said, “We don’t have garbage cans,
we burn our trash.” Holly and I were ready to take down his address
and go check out the situation when the teacher quickly stated
that he was one of the few students who did not reside in Estrella.
We talked about the community rules and their responsibility as
residents to abide by those rules; and we discussed the benefits of
living in Estrella that include the amenities and events. We had also
>>> mANAGer’S meSSAGe
brought many pictures of Estrella events in which the students were
able to recognize themselves or their friends.
I have to say that there was one moment that they were all just
staring at me waiting for something—anything—to stir their interest.
I was thankful that Holly had investigated programs on third grade
government classes and found a fun, interactive game for the
students to play once the presentation was done. The students
would answer questions pertaining to the presentation and a racecar
would travel through a track until all questions were answered
correctly and the car made its way to the finish line. Children who
answered the questions correctly were rewarded with a little gold
Estrella trophy.
Although it was very intimidating standing in front of 60 eight year
olds, we felt that it was a very successful presentation and the
children all had fun. We are also certain that they all went home and
told their parents to make sure to put their trash cans away.

F or many years I have worked in community management.
Very few management companies offer their clients on-site
management. Most have a central office location where
their staff works. Community Managers make site visits or property
inspections weekly, bi-weekly or sometimes only monthly. It is
usually on a set day and time. Managers who have more than one
community have limited time to schedule these visits and rarely
can they drop everything and drive out to a community if there is a
request to do so.
Capital Consultants Management Corporation is rare in the industry.
Though they have some “portfolio” communities, (those that are not
large enough to have site staff), the vast majority of the communities
they manage are the on-site variety. From my years of experience, on-
site management offers so many added benefits to our client residents.
In Estrella CCMC offers an on-site Community Services office
where Community Manager Lisa Lundskow and the rest of the
CCMC staff are available to assist current and potential residents
of Estrella. The Estrella Community Services office is an oasis in
the desert to so many new residents. They come by to get all of
the information they need that they may not have received prior to
closing escrow. Many new residents stop in to ask questions not
only about the community, but about the surrounding area. Our staff
regularly answers questions about where to go for shopping and
entertainment too. The great thing about the Estrella staff is that
many of them live in or near Estrella, making them a great resource
in the community. Our staff is also stocked with great “salespeople”
for your community. We receive many calls as well as walk in traffic
from potential owners who are inquiring about the community. They
are pleasantly surprised that the staff is on site and ready to assist.
Often times they tell us this is what made them decide to by a home
in Estrella versus a neighboring property.
If you just need to drop off your assessment payment, pick up
architectural guidelines and rules, have a question about the
association, need to know where there is a great place to eat, where
the closest shopping mall is located, want to pick up a community
magazine or purchase event tickets, you need look no further than
your own Community Services Office.

of the upcoming happenings in and around our great community.
March in Arizona means that spring training is in full swing. The
Goodyear Ballpark, located just minutes from Estrella, is home to
the Cleveland Indians and Cincinnati Reds. The ballpark first opened
in February 2009 and the baseball complex includes 8,000 stadium
seats, 1,500 lawn seats, six suites and 500 premium seats on the
party deck. A lot of promotions are happening during the month

ones - check out the Goodyear Skate Fest on April 13. The event will
feature exciting skateboarding demonstrations and tutorials, vendor
booths, food and a performance by local Indie-rock band, Covela.
The free event will be held from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. at Goodyear

Stepping Into SpringSubmitted by: Jim Potts, Horticulturist
As we step into spring, has spring truly sprung? Or is
Mother Nature just teasing us as to the beautiful weather
that is yet to come?
It is possible to have freezing temperatures in early March, so don’t
put the frost protection away for the summer just yet. Typically by
mid-march, the risk of freezing temperatures has lessened for the
lower desert areas, but in the foothills and outlying areas a freeze is
certainly still a possibility.
As temperatures begin to rise, it’s time to turn your irrigation timer
back on if you shut it off for the winter and adjust the settings for
the season to come. There is a great deal of information available
online for irrigation settings such as “water use it wisely” and other
municipal resources. Be sure to test the timer to see if it’s working
properly, replace the back-up battery if necessary and check the
system for leaks. It’s not unusual for valves to stick on, or pass water
slightly after sitting idle for the winter. Your local Irrigation supply
store can help walk you through the repair if necessary.
>>> SNIppeTS frOm fOur peAkS
This is also a good time to start
pruning the native and desert
adapted plants in our pallet.
Pruning should always be done to maintain plant health; removing
only dead, damaged or diseased portions and cross branching to
highlight the natural shape of the plant. Heavy pruning or “shearing”
can cause stress to a plant and invite insects that may damage the
plant. It’s always best to prune the minimum required and only where
necessary. A plant can recover quicker from several small pruning
wounds than from a single large wound, a good rule of thumb is to
never remove more than 20% of the plants tissue in a year.
Now is a good time of year to prune;
Texas Sage
Yellow Bells
Lantana
Valentine Bush
Cassia and most plants that were damaged in the freeze.
When pruning freeze damage; only prune back to where new
buds are emerging, some plants will be a little slower than others
recovering from the damage, so be patient.
The insects will begin to show up as temperatures rise. Most
damage is cosmetic, so don’t panic. Typically a good stream of
water will wash them off or better yet, let the beneficial insects take
care of them. Keep the plants watered properly and as stress free
as possible and they should be fine.
Spring weeds will start to emerge now with some rain. You can
manually remove them by hand or use a systemic herbicide (follow
the label carefully) to control them in larger populations. As always,
protect any innocent bystander plants as these types of chemicals
are typically broad spectrum. Many home improvement stores can
help you decide which product fits your needs best.

I f you have not walked The South Lake recently, you are missing out on a beautiful experience. The illumination from the newly refurbished ornamental lights creates the perfect setting for a
magical evening as you stroll around the lakes. The lights at South Lake are part of the ornamental light pole refurbishment project that includes the North and South Lake lights. This first phase of the project is nearing completion. By the time you are reading this article, there will only be a couple of weeks before the North Lake is complete.
Over the past few months, dedicated resident volunteers in conjunction with Todd Wuellner, Facilities Director for Estrella, have put in numerous hours researching and developing a plan to restore the ornamental light poles around the lakes, as well as parts of Elliot Road and Estrella Parkway. The team recommended to the Estrella Joint Committee board to refurbish the ornamental light poles rather than replace the them. This recommendation saved the community hundreds of thousands of dollars when compared to the cost of replacement.
Once Phase I is complete, Phase II, consisting of the ornamental light poles on Elliot Road and Estrella Parkway, will be underway by the end of April. It is important for all residents to remain aware of the project and be alert to the closure of walking and biking paths as the project moves forward with sections of poles being removed and sent for refurbishing. Safety is an important factor with this project and every effort is made to enforce the recommended safety plans.

T he Estrella Trails Committee wanted to introduce ourselves
and share a few things that are near and dear to us folks
planning and building our community trail system. We will
begin with discussing our charter and trail planning process, trail
etiquette, and finally letting you know about our trails!
Recreational trail use is more popular than ever, and the number
of trail users is increasing. People are going outside looking for
exercise, fun and a connection to nature. A well-designed trail
system will provide that while keeping the environment in better
shape. Since trails are a very popular source of recreation, people
often move to areas that provide them.
The Estrella Trails Committee works with our community and the
Estrella Joint Committee to develop, manage and maintain the
Estrella Trail System. Many of our committee members have been
to “trail school” and have used trails in various recreational activities
most of our lives. We hope our passion for trails will help build a
better community for all.

Our process of developing trails involves our community. When
considering a new addition or the adoption of an old trail,
the committee discusses whether it enhances flow from one
neighborhood to another, and if it can be built sustainably while
mitigating sensitive community issues. We provide a general
map and we also physically mark the general trail corridor. If any
issues come up, we attempt to meet the concerns and try to find
a compromise that works for everyone. After the planning process
is complete, we take a proposal to our HOA board for approval.
Once approved, we get to work. We build our trails by hand, using
pick axes, sledge hammers, rakes and our brawn………and all for
free! That’s right, we do this at NO building cost to the community
and for no gain by the trail builders. The only cost has been for Trail-
Head and Directional Arrow Signage. Trails in other communities
have cost the residents hundreds of thousands of dollars. Estrella is
blessed to have our trails for FREE!

As part of a feedback process, our HOA did a trail survey and we
had VERY favorable comments as well as some suggestions. We
are listening, and we are going to get you a map and get some
doggie bags out there!
Please follow trail etiquette. Our trails are for people on foot and
bike. Four-legged pets are welcomed and encouraged, but please
keep them under control and clean up after them. There should
not be any motorized vehicles or horses on any of the Estrella trails
unless it is a trail crew doing maintenance. Some trails might not be
suited for all fitness levels or technical abilities, so if a trail is new to
you consult a friend, go on-line to www.LifeinEstrella.com or look at
the tear-out map in this issue of Life in Estrella (on reverse page).
Please stay on the trail. This prevents erosion that messes up the
beauty of our area, while keeping home owners near trails happy.
Please do not litter. If you see garbage on the ground and pick it up,
you’re AWESOME!
We are currently working hard to establish a loop that encircles
Estrella – The Estrella Loop! It is nearly complete, we just need
to finish a few trail sections and install some signs to celebrate its
completion. It is made up of a series of trail sections, named to
describe terrain or location, and makes use of several tunnels that
keep the trails away from traffic. There are a few road crossings, so
please be sure to obey all traffic laws to safely cross the roads! The
Estrella Loop is approximately 12.5 miles.
We are currently working with Newland Communities and Estrella
Mountain Regional Park to offer more trail opportunities for you.
Stand by for more information!
Something else we are going to offer our community is “Memorial

plaque on the bench. As of now, the bench is approximately $400
including an inlay plaque. If you want to learn more about how you

can have one of the first permanent benches on our trails for all
to see, read the section ‘Estrella Memorial Benches’ below, visit
www.lifeinestrella.com and/or contact us at communications@
lifeinestrella.com. The Trails Committee will get together with the
bench “owner” and choose one of the many designated “Stop and
Smell the Flowers” locations on the trail. Most are at the top of a bluff
and will allow you to take a moment, relax and take in the beauty
of Estrella. The Trails Committee members are still drawing straws
to determine who gets to lug those heavy benches up the hill for
installation. One favorite bench is already there waiting for you to
enjoy. It’s known as the ‘Bunny Bench’ since it is cast concrete
in the form of a bunny rabbit. If you look closely, you can see the
Bunny Bench on the bluff behind Elliot Market. Or better yet, hike up
the trail from the San Gabriel trailhead, say “Hello” to the bunny and
enjoy the view while you sit on his back.
There you have it! We hope you are going to get those shoes on,
or get on your bike and get out on the trails. Use the Estrella Trails

I n the trophy cases of
the Gymnasium and the
Performing Arts Center lobbies
at Estrella Foothills High School
are several trophies and plaques
acknowledging the championships
and accomplishments of various
sports teams and performing arts
groups over the last decade. Those
awards are inspiring for current
students to see what those before
them have done, and for alumni
to come back and remember. For me, however, these reminders
hold value beyond the particular moment in time which they were
received. For me, the trophies and plaques symbolize what I want
for our students throughout their lives.
At EFHS, we strive for success for all students through building
relationships, establishing relevance, and increasing rigor. As part
of this, we acknowledge that each student has different talents
and desires and, therefore, will define success differently. And, we
acknowledge that there is more to school than just what takes place
in the classroom.
We encourage all students to take an appropriately demanding
and rigorous course load so they are not only admitted to the post-
secondary institutions and opportunities, but so they are prepared
to be successful in their post-secondary pursuits. When students
Winning: A Lifelong AspirationBy Dr. Leslie Standerfer, Principal
leave our campus, we want them to have a myriad of opportunities
available to them. And, we don’t want them to be excluded from
any possible opportunities because of their grades or lack of
appropriate coursework and preparation in high school. Beyond
their coursework, we want them to be well-rounded individuals.
We want them to be the modern Renaissance men and women
that have experiences in the arts, athletics, academic clubs, and all
areas that may interest them. We want them to have experiences
where they work cooperatively with others, face challenges, feel
the excitement that comes with victory, and overcome the agony
of defeat. We want them to develop self-efficacy; where they know
their personal strengths, and have strategies for building their
weaknesses. It is often balancing academic studies with other
activities where students develop important life skills such as time
management, compromise, and endurance.
As students get involved in athletics and activities on campus, they
come to feel the pride that comes with being a part of something
bigger than oneself. They come to understand the quote from
Rudyard Kipling’s Jungle Book that we often see posted and hear
repeated on campus, “For the strength of the pack is the wolf, and
the strength of the wolf is the pack.”
*EFHS will observe Spring Break March 11th through 15th. We will
also observe a Spring Holiday on March 29th. Although school will
not be in session, there may still be athletics and other activities on
campus during break.

Have you heard of the National Geographic Map? The
map is the size of a basketball court! It is used to teach
children the power and fun that maps can have. Well,
the map has traveled to all but five states in the United States,
and it is now here in Arizona! The director of the project has sent
out ten maps. There are three in Africa, three in Asia, and four in
North America. The map was at Westar Elementary the month of
February and was featured at our “STEM Night.” That STEM night
was awesome! You can find information about Westar STEM nights
on our website. http://www.liberty.k12.az.us/education/school/

Nigerian Pen Pals
Speaking of maps and going global, did you know that Mr. Paduano’s
6th grade class has Nigerian pen pals? They are writing letters back
and forth and doing projects together. I have interviewed two of these
6th grade students. They told me that in the letters they talk about
different cultures and languages – even what they wear! They said
that they really enjoy the pen pal project. Both students sounded very
interested in the different Nigerian customs and cultures of their pals.

Spring Break - March 11-15
Spring Holiday - March 29
We are in the heart of
another exciting season
of Spring Training
baseball in Goodyear. This year marks
the fifth anniversary of the Goodyear
Ballpark, which has been named the
Best Place to watch a Spring Training
game two of the last three years by the
New Times “Best Of” Readers’ Poll.
There are several exciting events taking place this year during the
anniversary season. There will be four night games that include
fireworks displays, along with six autograph days throughout the
season. And March 30 will be a Fan Appreciation Day. In addition,
family-friendly activities such as Estrella Falls Kid Zone with FREE
inflatables will take place every game, Kids Run the Bases events
are held at each Saturday and Sunday game, while Seniors Stroll
the Bases are held every Tuesday.
Another very exciting event will take place on March 6, when
Goodyear will host the World Baseball Classic and the Cincinnati
Reds take on Team Canada in an exhibition game. The World
Baseball Classic is the premier international baseball tournament.
This year, there are teams from 16 countries, and we are honored
to have one of the stops right here at our own Goodyear Ballpark.
It is only fitting that we host Team Canada as our city and state have
become such a popular destination for our neighbors to the north. In
fact, Arizona is now home to more than 140 Canadian businesses.
The Goodyear Police Department would like to remind the
community to protect oneself against crimes of opportunity.
By definition, a crime of opportunity is one that is committed
without planning. Basically, when the perpetrator sees the chance
to commit a crime, he/she seizes the opportunity. Goodyear Police
offer the following tips to avoid being a crime victim:
• Lock car doors and roll up windows
• Park in well lit areas at night
• Do not leave valuables in your vehicle
• Lock home doors and windows at night or when leaving
• Stay alert and be aware of your surroundings, walk with a sense
of purpose
Don’t Fall Victim to Crimes of OpportunityBy Lisa Kudis, PIO, Goodyear Police
• Carry your purse firmly and close to your body or better yet leave
it at home and only carry what you need in your pocket - such as a
small amount of money, keys, and maybe one credit card.
• Have your car or house key in your hand as you approach the
door.
• Follow your “gut instinct”, don’t put yourself in an uncomfortable
situation
• Use the buddy system, especially if out at night
• Use well lit and well traveled streets and walkways
• Being aware of one’s surroundings and identifying potential
threats and dangerous situations is more of a mindset than a skill
set. Situational awareness can be exercised by anyone and can truly
make the difference between being a victim of a crime or not.

CITYCanada Day In GoodyearBy Tom Cortabitarte, General Manage
Submitted by The City of Goodyear
More than 650,000 Canadians visited Arizona last year alone.
We are officially proclaiming March 6 to be “Canada Day” in
Goodyear. The night will be filled with Canadian culture, trivia and
prizes. Canadian flags will be given away to the first 1,000 fans.
Canadian food, beer and other beverages will also be available.
Team Canada will play the Cincinnati Reds beginning at 7:05 PM
on March 6, and tickets for the game are now available. To order
tickets visit www.goodyearbp.com or call 623-882-3130. There are
discounted tickets available by mentioning “Canada.”
I am excited about another great year of baseball in Goodyear,
and especially proud to honor our Canadian visitors during this fun
exhibition game on March 6.
