They appoint a professional Town Manager who supervises all the town staff in acting on the decisions of Town Meeting and the Selectmen. Other elected positions include five School Com-mittee members who set education policy

and engage the superintendent, five Plan-ning Board Members who are stewards of the Comprehensive Plan, zoning by-law and subdivision and development regulations, and the Town Meeting Moderator.

Municipal services include police and fire protection, emergency medical team support, disposal of solid wastes and recyclables, pub-lic works, parks and recreation programs, a library, a community center and community bus service.

History in Lexington

Originally known as Cambridge Farms, Lexington was first settled in 1642. Addi-tional residents were soon attracted by the availability of hay fields and farming acreage and the possibilities of land speculation. Ear-ly settlers formed their own parish in 1691 to avoid traveling into Cambridge, and soon thereafter, Lexington was incorporated in 1713. The Town remained a quiet farming community until April, 1775. With a total population at that time of seven hundred, the town played a pivotal role in United States history when the “Skirmish on the Green” began the American Revolution

On the morning of April 19, 1775, on Lexington Green, about seventy-seven (77) farmers and tradesmen banded together in the Lexington militia to try and prevent a British force of 700 light infantry from destroying a supply of arms in Concord. Captain John Parker was quoted as saying, “Stand your ground; don’t fire unless fired upon, but if they mean to have a war, let it begin here.” Then a shot of unknown origin rang out in Lexington, and the British Regulars fired a return volley killing eight Colonial Minute Men and wounding ten. At that moment in history, the war for inde-pendence had begun with the first battle of the American Revolution.

Over the years, the Battle Green has served as a symbol of freedom for many causes, celebrations, and political rallies. Presidents Grant and Ford visited to celebrate the battle, in 1875 for the Centennial, and in 1975 for the Bicentennial. A Vietnam War protest on the Battle Green, led by John Kerry (who later became U.S. Senator and Secretary of State), holds the record for the most people ever arrested at one time in Massachusetts. A National Historic Landmark, the Battle Green continues to be a place of honor for events of all kinds – the official site of Lexington’s annual Veteran’s Day, Memorial Day, and Patriots’ Day celebrations. The American flag flies over the Battle Green 24 hours a day by Act of Congress.

In 1846, the extension of a railroad line from Boston made commuting possible, bringing more travelers into the town. Lexington soon became known as a summer resort providing a healthy and invigorating atmosphere. Following World War II, popu-lation and residential building increased dramatically, and academicians and high-tech associates became neighbors of descendants of the early settlers. Colonial structures and Victorian mansions were joined by award -winning contemporary architecture. East Lexington in the 19th

Century had been the scene of debates on such issues as abolition and temperance. The town’s interest in education, which had been the foundation for establish-ing the first normal school in the United States, has continued to flourish.

Concerned about maintaining the quality of the town, Lexington citizens established one of the nation’s first planning boards, and zoning regulations. Today Lexington proudly preserves its history while continu-ing to support its reputation for progressive action and independent spirit.

Area Attractions

Buckman Tavern1 Bedford StreetOldest tavern in Lexington where about 77 Minute Men gathered in the early hours of

April 19, 1775, while awaiting the British regulars. Licensed to serve drivers in 1713, and also a place for churchgoers during the Sunday services, the interior today is much the same as it was when the tavern was headquarters of the Minute Men. To the left of the tavern is the Memorial to the Lexington Minute Men of 1775, erected in 1949, and containing the names of the Minute Men who died on the Green in the first battle of the Revolutionary War. The inscription reads “These men gave everything dear in life, Yea and Life itself, in support of the common cause.” www.lexingtonhistory.org/historic-sites.html

The Old BelfryMassachusetts Avenue and Clarke Street Originally built on its present site in 1761, it was moved to the Green in 1768. From there its bell summoned people to worship, warned them of danger, tolled on their deaths, and sounded the alarm of April 19, 1775. The Belfry was not built on the church or meeting house, but was erected as a separate structure. The exact reproduc-tion, which exists today, was built in 1910 on its original site on Belfry Hill. www.lexingtonhistory.org/historic-sites.html

Getting Around LexingtonLexPress – Community Bus Service

Lexpress, created in 1979 was one of the first community bus services in the country. After over three decades of operation, Lex-press remains a vital form of transportation for many in the community.

Lexpress runs Monday through Friday from 6:35AM – 6:30PM during the school year, and from 7:00AM – 6:30PM during July and August. The service consists of three, 23-seat buses assigned to two, 30-minute routes each. Each of the six routes begins and ends in Depot Square to facilitate transferring, and provide access to the amenities located in Lexington Town Center. Lexpress aims to serve all major area destinations including the Burlington Mall.

The Town of Lexington Transportation Ser-vices Division of the Human Services Depart-ment oversees Lexpress operations. General policies including routes, schedules, and fares are guided by a resident Transportation Advisory Committee with final approval by the Board of Selectmen. The Town contracts the buses and drivers through a competitive bid process. The current contractor is M&L Transit Systems located in Woburn, MA.

Half the cost to operate Lexpress comes from the tax levy. The remaining amount comes from a combination of MBTA grant money, bus fares, traffic mitigation funding, and dona-tions from local business and individuals.

In 2015, Lexpress provided over 81,000 rides. 46 percent of riders were students, 20 percent were adults, 22 percent were seniors, and 2 percent were children under age six.Lexpress does not have any designated stops; board by standing on the side of the road the bus is traveling and wave down the

bus. Transfer for free at Depot Square in Lexington Center to use other Lexpress routes. Each route operates approximately once per hour. All routes begin and end at Depot Square, and take about 25 minutes to complete.
